are there any mnetters who have first hand experience of group b strep.

my sister is due on monday and went to hospital last week because her waters were leaking. she was discharged the midwife told her that baby had dropped down back waters had gone and labour was immenient. at the time they took a swab and today called to inform her that she tested positive for gbs.

3 years ago my mum lost her youngest to gbs. my little sister died at 4 days old after all her organs failed.

my sister is a nervous wreck and i have said i will get some information together to help her.

my mum called the midwife and she said that my sisters waters hadnt broken. why did they tellmy sister they had? and that its ok aslong as she recieves antibiotics during labour.

but i ask myself is this good enough as she was told her waters had leaked surely if water can escape the bacteria can get in.

i have managed after much deliberation to get my sister an app with her consultant tomorrow but wondered if any of you could advise us on what to say.

many thanks

xx

i tested positive for gsb when my ds was a few months old.... I mentioned this to my midwife and asked if I would be tested before this baby is due... she said yes and if positive then I will be given antibiotics during labour she said this is all they do....

Sorry not much help I know but just letting you know I have been told the same information that nothing will be done till labour.

good luck to your sister and family.xx

i am sorry for the loss of your little sister..that is very

there is a very simple test that can be done to determine if any fluid leaking is amniotic fluid

also, you can have a small leak ,and the sac can reseal and replenish

the usual way of combating group b strep is administering IV antibiotics in labour...that usually sorts the problems out before they can develop

AFAIK, like 2plus1, nothing is done before labour starts.

sorry to not be much help

thats what i thought lulu.. about the sac resealing. but surely if it has been broken then the gbs bacteria could of got n then sac reseal.

i feel so helpless its her first baby and the only knowledge of gbs she has is that our sis died and caused no end of probs within the family.

when she sees the consultant, it is really important to emphasise you have first hand knowledge of the devastating effects if this and need more than just a pat on the head, and a there, there, you;ll be fine...i'm sure they will take it very seriously and ensure your sister gets excellent care

could just do without the extra worry, no?

hope it goes ok xxxxx

Sometimes if the waters really go they will admit the mom and administer antibiotics. IF they don't there really isn't anything to be done until labor starts.
