Could an experienced consultant tell the sex at 10.5 weeks?

I had an early scan today at a private clinic. I was chatting to the consultant as he was scanning me and he asked about the balance of our family currently. I told him we had 2 boys and he laughed and said oh well this one will definitely be a boy too!

At the time I just thought it was general chit-chat and everyone who knows I'm pregnant has said 'oh it'll be another boy' so I didn't think anything of it. However, thinking back, I'm now wondering whether he saw something on the scan that indicated the sex and that's why he asked the question in the first place and that he was giving me kind of preparing me for the news it'll be another boy. Yes, I know I'm overthinking it, but how possible would it be at 10.5 weeks for him to know? I have a friend who was told 95% chance of a boy at her 12 week scan so guess it's possible?

It seems unlikely. I'm sure that's just too early to see anything.

I'd say highly unlikely but maybe not impossible. I had a scan at 10.5wks at the fetal medicine centre. I was scanned by Prof N himself and he said he couldn't tell. He said he could tell in about 90% of cases by (I think) 12.5wks. So I imagine the nub changes significantly in those 2wks.
I was there for a harmony test so found out the sex for def at 12wks anyway.

Do you have a scan pic? There is a sex determine theory that is apparently very accurate until about 10wks. It's just theory but to do with where the yolk is/has been. Or something like that. A Canadian Dr I think. I'll have a look

Works best around 6-9wks but some 10wk scans can be done.

Placenta right=girl, left=boy
But don't forget ultrasounds reverse so if a standard ultrasound then reverse if trans vaginal then the right is the right.
In my 10.4wk scan you could just about still see where the placenta had attached.
So its placenta not which side the baby is.

I had my scan today at 12w5 days. I misheard what the Consultant said & thought he was making small talk about if we would be finding out the sex. I said yes & said I think it is a girl. He replied stating he was 80% sure it is a boy & zoomed up to the genitala & stated definately something there! I was a bit taken aback as I didn't think they would even hazard a guess at this early stage! I read online now in others experience that they have been wrong. So I have booked a gender scan in a couple of weeks!

My 11+2 scan sonographer (standard nhs) told us the sex and she was right (now 31 weeks and two scans since have confirmed).

I had a nuchal scan at around that time and he said they are able to tell at that point. We were told we were having a girl and she was!

We were told the sex (a boy) at a standard NHS scan yesterday at 11.3. Totally taken aback, as I didn't realise they could tell that earlier either, and I wasn't prepared for it (this is a pregnancy after a neonatal loss, and I think I was secretly hoping for a baby of the same sex as the one that died). Having done a little research last night, it look like both sexes have swollen genitals at that stage, so difficult for a non-professional to tell the difference, but its not unusual for an experienced sonographer to be able to (esp. if it is a boy, girls are harder to positively identify).

Sounds to me like he was joking tbh. Had you told him you'd be finding out? If you hadn't it would be really unfair for him to give it away like that.

I think the consultant was referring to the odds of you having another boy rather than the actual scan results. The odds aren't 50:50 if you already have more than 1 of the same sex.

I was told at 11 weeks it was in all probability a boy and it was. I thibk the machines are so clear these days that they can orobabky makr a very educated guess at that stage.

I hadn't told the consultant that we were going to find out and I think from his tone he was just making conversation and I'm overthinking it. I have my nuchal scan with him in a couple of weeks when I'll be 12 + 4 so I might ask him then if he can tell. I would love a girl but I absolutely adore my boys so if it's another boy then that would be lovely too. Didn't have this for the first 2 as we didn't find out but as this will be our last we thought it might be nice to find out this time and have that different experience, plus I'll know what I need to keep!

Just to throw a bit of doubt in, one of my friends is a hospital Dr, so she got her doctor chums in maternity to scan her at 12 weeks and tell her the gender. They said it was probably a boy. She's now 3 years old, and definitely a girl!

I was told ds was 'probably a boy' at 9 weeks.

I was also told my boy was probably a boy at 8 weeks!I think with boys it's easier to tell. For obvious reasons.
Also, i think statistically if you have 2 boys it means you are slightly more likely to have a 3rd.

So yes, an experienced consultant could definitely tell- but id say the error margin would be high too.

I found out that DC2 was a boy at 9 weeks, but only because i had the Harmony test. Having said that, during the pre harmony scan i asked the consultant to guess, just for fun- he guessed boy- he was right

Just wanted to update - had my nuchal scan today, consultant said 85% sure it's a ....... Girl!

So he clearly was just making small talk last time and

Congratulations! What a nice surprise after 2 boys as well.
When we went to our 20 week scan we took our 2 boys (also have 2 girls but they weren't with us that day). We've not found out the sex and our boys are 6&3 and the youngest was talking about the baby brother on the screen. Sonographer being really friendly did say to him "oh you never know it might be a sister" so since then I've been convinced it's a girl and she was hinting to us (I did want to find out but had promised dh to keep it a surprise this time). Nothing like an over-active pregnancy brain
