Very Upsetting NT scan result

I'm 46 years old and just got a terrible NT scan of 1 in 4 and a possible non visible nasal bone. The blood tests were fine and I'm having a CVS test on Thursday. Can I please talk with anyone who has had a similar experience? Thank you so much.

Holding your hand for you.

I know you have a cvs booked but wondered had anyone mentioned a harmony test. It's private only at the moment but the NHS sometimes mention them. It's non invasive of your worried about miscarriage risk etc. I think it is about 500 pounds.not sure how fast it is.

Remember the 1 in 4 calculation is an indicator of risk only. How many weeks were you at scan? And remember being 46 will increase the risk regardless of anything else.

Hi Dancer, did the midwife/sonographer tell you that you would be very short odds anyway because of your age? Please try not to worry yourself sick until you've had the CVS. I was pre-warned the results would be a worry and I would probably be offered an amnio, so I went for NIPT testing instead (I am over 40) and all is fine.
I'm sure somebody much more knowledgable will be along to offer some advice shortly...the ante-natal testing thread is also a helpful thread.
I think sometimes a lot of unnecessary worry can be caused by the NT scan. I didn't have it with two of my children for exactly that reason and only chose the NIPT (non invasive private blood tests) due to a previous full term loss.
I hope all is well on Thursday x

Cross post with 'holidays'.
I had a Similar test to Harmony (which is taken from the name of the clinic or company I think!)) I paid £400 and had the results within the week.not sure if it's ok to post the company I used, I cant recommend them highly enough!

thank you so much for your reply and for holding my hand. I did the scan today and was 12w6d,,, I live in Athens, Greece and I don't really know about the Harmony test, it hasn't been mentioned to me. Being 46,(a month ago) I started off with a 1 in 15 risk but I thought it might go down, not up. Also, the nasal bone thing is more of a worry isn't it, that even if it were 1 in 4, without the nasal bone then there might be some chance of a more positive outcome.? thank you again sending you hugs.

Do you have strong feelings about what you would do, if the CVS is positive for a genetic disorder? At 46 the NT will very frequently come back recommending a further, diagnostic test, and most of those babies do not have anything wrong with them at all. I'm sure this is stressful and I hope all goes well on Thursday, there will be handholding and listening here as much as you need.

I had a 1:2 result & no nasal bone at 12 weeks. She's now 5 & totally fine. 34 weeks pg again & had a 1:25 result. My hospital offer a DNA blood test now which came back as 1:103. I think some people just have high risk factors (certainly seems to be the case with me). It's early days for the nasal bone. Hope it works out for you.

Hiya, my cousin had 1 in 4 risk pregnancy and the baby was born without down syndrome although they were prepared for that scenario. They didn't bother with amnio test. Hope this helps in some way, I think doctors prepare you for most situations and want you to know all the outcomes

Thank you all so much for your replies especially Grizzer and Rpj16 as they are positive outcomes and give me hope!. I was going crazy yesterday as it was a big shock but have calmed down a bit now - if there is something wrong there isn't much I can do about it.... I'll have to deal with that after the CVS results. I don't know how I will feel if the CVS is postitive,,,the results will take 3 working days I've been told. hugs and love to you all xxx

Hello. Sorry to hear about this it is very distressing. I was given 1 in 5. I am 33. I didn't want the invasive test due to the risk of miscarriage. I had the non invasive test but I don't know if it's available in Greece. My midwife recommend calling the Antenatal Results and Choices (arc) who pointed me to a few clinics which ran it. Two weeks of hell with worry and it was negative. I just had highs hormone levels though no abnormal scan. However an abnormal scan is only one of many indicators and often a baby is downs without any indicators.
Good luck.

Thank you to lau and amysmummy for your concern.
The cvs went really well and it was over in about 1-2 minutes. Afterwards there was some pain and cramping so I had to lie down for about 20-30mins - then all day yesterday on and off. I'm now going crazy again waiting for the results - going back and forth from unbelieving to of course it must be true!! I won't be able to relax until I know the results. amysmummy, I don't know if you've had a cvs before, but I would cancel everything you have to do for the day and the day after having it as it's generally uncomfortable - of course everybody is different and it might have just affected me that way. Thinking of you and hoping the best results and/or future healthy pregnancies for both of us!!! xxx xxx xxx

Glad to hear it went well and hope you're taking it easy! I've cancelled work for the week to be ok the safe side... I work in a school nursery and the kids tear around like maniacs so I'm not taking any risks... Praying that your little baby is tucked up safe and growing healthily. Keep in touch with results, I'll let you know how I get on Monday.... Did you have the detailed scan too? Was anything else picked up? Xx

Hey lovely, my cvs went well, just the anxious wait now... Have you heard anything yet? Thinking of you and praying for both of our babies xxx

Hi lovely, I'm happy to hear your cvs went well. I did get my results on Friday, unfortunately they were positive and I had a termination yesterday. I was too upset during that time to write and I wanted to wait for you to get yours over with too. I very much hope that it all goes great for you!! I'm assuming you have other children from your username so that is a good thing! I've been reading a lot about chromosome anomalies during the last week and it's not anybody's 'fault' - high risk comes with age and unfortunately there's nothing one can do about that. Please let me know if you feel like it - I look forward to your good news and I look forward to having a healthy baby at some point in the near future!! lots of love hugs and support. xxx

Sorry to hear that Dancer, unfortunately chromosome abnormalities are nothing you can really control. That doesn't necessarily make it any easier but you are right to say it is no one's fault. Be kind to yourself x

So sorry dancer. Make sure you allow yourself time to grieve & rest. If you have been offered counselling I would really recommend you take it when you feel ready. Talking about it really does help. Thinking of you.

Oh dancer I'm so sorry 😓 I was hoping for a better outcome for you 😓 take time to heal, I'm sure in the future you will have a healthy, happy baby. It really is out of our control, the chromosomes just develop that way for no apparent reason sometimes... I'll keep in touch with any further developments, here if you need to talk xxx

Thank you so much ladies for your kind words and support! I feel nearly 100% different to yesterday which was one of the worst days of my life. This was my 3rd 'non-viable' pregnancy in 2 years and our very sweet doctor says that he 'won't let me go through this ever again' - I don't really know what that means or if it's possible but we'll definitely be going down some kind of ivf route after a couple of months have passed. I'm very relieved and happy that this part is over with now and hopefully can stay that way with renewed positivity into the future. All your posts and comments are greatly appreciated and they really helped me get through this - just to know that many others have had similar experiences helps so so much. love hugs and best wishes to you all xxx

Hey dancer, still no news... The waiting it's killing me, had test Monday so I'm thinking three days will probably be tomorrow... I hope the cells have grown and that there were enough of them... I'd hate to be recalled to do it all again 😌 how are you now? I hope you're getting lots of rest and support? Xxx

Hello my dear. I'm so happy that your results were fine!! I'm sorry I wasn't around yesterday I'm just feeling incredibly upset at the moment,,,, I do hope it will pass soon. Great news though and if the initial results are good it is extremely rare that the full ones will have a problem, so I'm told. Best wishes to you - thank you for being here through this awful (for me) time. lots of love xxx
