Can speed of baby's heartbeat determine the sex?

I am 25 weeks pregnant and didn't find out the sex of the baby at the scan. I have been to the midwife today and she said, after she had found out I didn't know the sex, that she thought by the speed of the heartbeat it was possibly a girl. I am feeling quite cross by this as she knew I hadn't found out. I already have 2ds, so I think she thought this was what I wanted to hear. Can you tell by this?

apparently, heartbeat faster for a girl. old wives tale i think

paulaplumpbottom · 11/12/2006 16:06

I think so to. There really isn't any way to tell before hand without looking at a scan.

My ds was supposed to be a boy - worked, my dd1 was supposed to be a boy - NO, my dd2 was supposed to be a boy - NO!!

steffy1 · 11/12/2006 16:08

i mean, your heartbeat could have been faster because you were anxious because of the appointment, rushing to get there; anything-which could in turn, have raised the babys heart rate too. Not nice of midwife to comment though, especially as she knew its supposed to be a surprise.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/12/2006 16:13

Is that because of a scan? 3senough?

Boys are supposed to have slower heartbeats than girls. It was right for both of mine.

kickassangel · 11/12/2006 16:25

i'm sure my mw told me that GIRLS have lower heart beats, and tend to be smaller. mine had a high heart beat & appeared to be quite big - i had a girl at just over 6lb, so don't rely on it.

MKGnearlyimmaculateconception · 11/12/2006 16:56

If it were true my ds would have a been a girl.

baubleloo · 11/12/2006 17:21

Ds always had a low heartbeat when I was pg,but that was probably more luck than judgement as this time around the heartbeat so far has always been quite a bit higher.According to my scan last week I'm having another boy,so I would imagaine it's an old wives tale and not much truth in it!

paulaplumpbottom · 11/12/2006 17:35

Girls actually tend to be a little bigger which is why they have a higher survival rate.

IdrisTheRedNosedDragon · 11/12/2006 17:40

DS was supposedly a girl

DD was equally supposedly a boy

xmasstocking · 11/12/2006 17:42

Old wives tale I think - DS had a very fast heartbeat throughout pg.

2000milestoeidsvold · 12/12/2006 09:03

not in my case - dd2 had the heartbeat of a 'boy' according to old wives tale....

fwiw - a tv program did a study of old wives tales and pregnancy and the one that had the highest accuracy was the ring on string test.... predicted I think 8 out of 10 correctly.

pulapula · 12/12/2006 14:22

I was convinced I was having a boy throughout pregnancy- based on old wives tales people kept quoting at me, and probably because I wanted a girl but to think I was having one could led to disappointment.

At my last midwife appointment, she commented on the heartbeat and said boys were more ploddy and girls more skippy and the heartbeat was definitely ploddy.

Lo and behold, I had a girl so don't believe anything apart from hard evidence on a scan photo. And I've heard that the accuracy rate from scan photos is higher for boys than girls.

elliedragon · 12/12/2006 16:05

Thanks everyone. I now feel I am back to not knowing instead of thinking I am having a girl. I was really cross last night that the midwife had told me. I think it is my hormones!
