carbon monoxide testing

Hi All,

I had my first midwife appointment today. my test results came back at 4 which the midwife was happy with but she said usually 1,2 and 3 is the better result.

What was your result? Should I be concerned? I don't smoke

Really? I have never heard of carbon monoxide testing in pregnancy. Did they test your house or you yourself?!?

I've never heard of anyone getting these tests either, what is the purpose of them?

Are you on about the Co meter to check for smoking?
Mine was 0 but I don't smoke and no one in the house does either.

they tested me at my midwife appointment. It was similar to an asthmatic test. she said anything over 6 would suggest I'm smoking. She didn't seem worried at all but I was with a student midwife so just wanted to ratify the results with you lot :)

the qualified midwife was out of the room for my whole appointment. The SM also told me I could take cold and flu whereas my doctor told me its an absolute no no.

yeah the meter check. no one in my house smokes and i'm not around people that smoke hence the worry. she didn't appear worried at all but it just seemed quite a high score to me

Ooh I had Carbon Monoxide testing and I think it was 2.9 or something like that. Weirdly though, the machine started beeping which usually indicates there's a problem. The midwife was a bit confused but recommended I got a carbon monoxide monitor for the house in case we had a leak. I was so freaked out I ordered one on next day delivery from Amazon.

Absolutely no carbon monoxide in our house. Can't believe I got so panicky about it. Think her machine was just on the blink!

I had this too, talk about nanny state! I think it is because they don't believe you if you say 'I don't smoke'!

However, if you have a higher than expected result and don't smoke, it might be worth getting a carbon monoxide detector installed at home, to make sure you're safe (especially if you have an old heating system).

I had this as well, mine was a low figure can't remember what it was exactly.
I used to smoke before pregnancy and mentioned it to my doctor so I assumed that's why the midwife tested me.

If you live in a city your Co readings will never be O...

I had an 0 but I live in the country side. Though I was before it was cold enough to use the fire (that has just been written off due to probably leaking)

I had it and my reading Was 1 car fumes etc all play a part in the reading

Yup! When I lived in London, my bogies were 50 shades of grey.

Mine was 0, I don't smoke nor does anyone in my family.

I had a reading of 5 which is that of a light smoker and I don't smoke. It caused a bit of a panic in our house and we got a CO detector but everything was fine. At my next appointment it was 0 so was probably down to walking past smokers or external factors.

Living with a smoker can cause a positive reading too.

Mine was always 0 or 1, aside from the day I spent 40 minutes walking to the hospital along a busy dual carriageway - and it was a 3 then. Quite interesting, I thought. Really demonstrates the impact of air pollution!

My first test was 6. Don't smoke, never have. They tested DH at the same time and his was 1. Only explanation is that I'd driven to the appt from work, through rush hour traffic, with the window down to boot. I'm sure being in London will contribute markedly.

They've tested it twice more since, both times 1 or 2. I shouldn't worry about buying the machine - they'd be telling you if they thought there was a problem.

Mine came back at 3 and I have never smoked a cigarette in my life. The midwife said so long as it was less than 5 or 6 it was fine.

Mine said 1-4 is normal. I got 3, then it flipped up to 4 a couple of seconds later. I have never smoked in my life! I also have a fully working carbon monoxide detector installed. I figured mine might be a bit higher due to having sat next to my in-laws' log burner the previous couple of evenings.

Do get a detector though! Everyone should have one!
