Bleeding three weeks post baby

Sister had a baby three weeks ago.

She stopped bleeding after a few days. (Lucky cow) She phoned me yesterday to say that it had started again and should she be concerned. Told her not to panic unless it went bright red again or smelt or she felt ill. She said Ok.

She phoned a few hours later saying that it was getting redder and would it be her period. I am a gynae nurse not a midwife so I asked her to phone the labour ward for advice as I hadn't really got a clue.

Has anyone any ideas?

more than likely period. Is she breastfeeding?

no she tried but it didn't work. So she is bottle feeding

unlikely to be a period, but not impossible...could be a sign that a small amount of placenta retained, or she is doing too much and therefore the blood loss has become heavier again.....i bottle fed mine and didn;t get a period for 7 weeks....worth being checked out by the midwife to ensure its not the beginnings of an intfection x

I stopped bleeding within a week then restarted again a couple of weeks later (i can't remember exactly) is she in any pain? are there clots, is the bleeding very heavy?

No it's not heavy or clotty. She says it is like a period but i thought it was too early to have a period after three weeks.
It is a while since I had DD. I bled for about six weeks then got period about a month after that. With her first child she said she bled for 9 weeks and then stopped till her period
