Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Twodrifters I found labour a doddle after my horrid HG pregnancy. And within half an hour if giving birth u was drinking milky tea and buttered toast (the best tea and toast I've ever had!). You will almost certainly be absolutely fine almost immediately.

icant that sounds like a horrid night. Glad you're in a room of your own now and able to concentrate on yourself and your health.

MotherofPearl · 23/11/2015 17:33

I like the sound of your midwife Spandau!
Another vote here for labour being the best bit of pregnancy! I think one of the benefits of HG (?!) is that unlike most women who maybe dread/fear labour, we HG ladies think 'bring it on!' because it means the end of sickness!

LucindaE · 23/11/2015 18:46

EMS I can't believelyour little girl is four already, that's amazing. Sweet she adores the baby.
MotherofPearl I ask you! From a midwife! That should be listed as one of the prize silly 'Have you tried' of advice from medically trained people, along with ginger biscuits and 'have you ever thought of changing your diet?'
spandau It's nice she was sympathetic.
Reebok Charlie squeezed amysmum and all others having the misfortune to go into work in miserable weather, how did things go today?

OP posts:
squeezed · 23/11/2015 18:48

Last time I was so worried about labour but this time I'm excited about it signalling the end of the sickness. I've been signed off work again, after only calling the doctor for advice on the dizziness. Occupational health were brilliant and told me to take time off and rest. Not sure my manager will be best pleased.

Reebok · 23/11/2015 19:03

I'm so shattered and laying in bed with dd feeling really sick.

IcAnt sorry you're hAving to deal with such a horrid person!

Mop I didn't get to hear heartbeat either. Was disappointed and also felt appointment was a waste of time. Don't get seen now until 28 weeks! Think with second or subsequent pregnancies they just leave you to it as figure you will know more.

Two, I agree...labour is the easiest part of pregnancy. My labour with dd lasted 27 hours, dds heart rate dropped and I almost had to have an emcs but escaped it and had a vontouse delivery...but I would take that anyway over hg! I remember when pregnant with dd I mentioned that lots of hg sufferers said labour was easy in comparison to pregnancy to a non hg sufferer. She was so patronizing! Wanted to slap her but she had no idea what she was talking about as had never suffered from hg. You will be fine two.

Hope everyone else is having a better day. Already counting down to the weekend. I have no energy.

Reebok · 23/11/2015 19:42

Sciatic pain is really killing me. It seems worse this time. Struggling to walk.

shoopshoopsong · 23/11/2015 20:03

I''d rather give birth weekly than have hg.

Icant - how are you doing now in your own room? A bit easier to cope at least, I hope. Not sure how you, spandau and reebok are trooping on with other health problems too, sounds so hard. I'm struggling with mental health stuff but at least it's not more physical on top of the hg.

MoP was it you that drinks elderflower? I tried sparkling elderflower and managed two bottles of it today so thanks for the tip!

amysmummy12345 · 23/11/2015 21:05

Hi all lucinda fortunately I only do weds Thurs Fri so got another day to chill before work 😊 I don't know how you full time ladies manage it!! I tried some black grape pop from the Caribbean section of Tesco today, it was quite palatable, anything different to plain water as I'm so bored of it but its the only thing that suits me... X

MotherofPearl · 23/11/2015 21:43

Squeezed, I'm sure it's for the best that you've been signed off. Try not to feel guilty, even if your manager is unhappy. Your health comes first.
Reebok, you are really having a bad time. Don't know how you're managing to get into work. Is there anything that can be done for the sciatica? Hang in there.
Shoop, so glad the sparkling elderflower worked! It's still my main drink. I found it quite expensive though, so now I buy elderflower cordial and dilute it with fizzy water. Much cheaper and tastes the same! So sorry to hear you're struggling with the mental side of things. You can always come on here to chat, or rant, or say whatever helps you. As Lucinda said a while ago, HG seems to make everything feel 'dead', and make it very difficult to experience any joy. But it will get better. X

shoopshoopsong · 23/11/2015 23:18

Thankyou MoP I can't wait to feel like 'me' again I have forgotten what it's like

spandau1980 · 24/11/2015 11:08

shoop don't be ashamed or embarrassed to ask gp for a mild anti depressant. I've took sertraline in two pregnancies and will do again with this one. Ds and dd both fine .. I'm waiting to see a consultant on Thurs as cant remember if I was 4 or 5 months with dd before I took them . Can't take in first 3 months as baby Dev unless it's critical to do so. How far along are you now ?
Not saying the pill s are a cure all by any stretch but they help me keep on the straight amd narrow amd they are also the best for anxiety .
I'm having another rough morning. Dd still not sleeping well. I'm tired then nauseau worse :(
Got stomacg cramps again and head pains again ...
Got upset stomach too ... but that could be due to antacids I'm taking.

Sat on sofa with a blanket freezing cold despite layers of clothes and heating on.

No light at end of tunnel here sadly :(

Good luck to brave souls off to wk this week...

X

amysmummy12345 · 24/11/2015 14:18

Hows everyone doing today? Been nauseous all day but managed only dry heaving this morning instead of bringing up bile #result

Feeling quite nervous about going into work for the last three days before I leave to return to day to day supply (been on long term supply at this school) think the anxiety of it all had worsened the nausea... Quite looking forward to going back to day to day as I can take days off for things like DDs craft morning at nursery without feeling guilty or missing out altogether...

reebok how you holding up this week?
icant hope hospital is treating you well?
shoop I hope you manage to sort some meds out
spandau I can't get warm either!!!
Waves to everyone else xx

Reebok · 24/11/2015 16:22

I'm just about surviving today thanks. Think I'm coming down with a cold thanks to this awful weather. Just what I need on top of hg. The commute is killing me. How's everyone getting on? Spandau and Amy sorry things are rough. I can't hope you're doing as well as can be.

Waves to everyone else.

spandau1980 · 24/11/2015 16:37

Perpetual full stomach after any food and feeling need to vom .. is this now reflux or still HG
?
rantidine ain't doing anything for it :(
Still feel so sick
16 plus 5

shoopshoopsong · 24/11/2015 17:01

Thanks Spandau I've been on anti depressants for years including through previous pregnancy, but haven't managed to keep them down much in this time, and got out of the habit of trying, so the lack of meds are probably a big part of my dip at the moment. Had a doc appt today he says when I finish metochlopromide packet to just stay with ondansetron so am really hoping sickness subsides soon or I won't manage just on ondansetron.

CharlieHamer1985 · 24/11/2015 17:37

Hi Ladies, since ive been on Ondansetron ive on being taking 1 4mg tablet per day which i take before i go to bed as it was making me so drowsy which i couldnt afford to be as my 8.5 month is crawling all over the place. I was worried to take more than one coz of side effects of constipation etc. In th last week whilst im not gagging/being sick as much, im feeling nausea all the time. Just wondered if i can take 1 cyclzixne in addition to the Ondansetron? Had a vomiting session about 1hr ago (just bile), it came at the worse time. Was feeding my LO and a delivery man showed up at the door with a parcel. Had to grab one of LO nappy sacks.

MotherofPearl · 24/11/2015 17:53

Sounds like I've had a similar day to Amys: nausea & heaving but no actual voms. Feel rubbish but could obviously be a lot worse.
Reebok, all sympathies about impending cold. I've still not shaken off my cold and feel so foggy and blocked up.
Charlie, as far as I know it's fine to combine Ondansetron & Cyclizine. I was originally prescribed Cyclizine and then later changed to Ondansetron. But the hospital consultant said it was fine to 'top up' with Cyclizine as needed. The only reason I've not done it is because Cyclizine doesn't seem to help me very much.
Sorry to hear that you've had another rotten day Spandau. It's so unfair, especially at 16 weeks.
Icant, how did your 16 week midwife check go, if indeed you were able to get to it?
Waves to Lucinda and everyone.

CharlieHamer1985 · 24/11/2015 18:35

Reebook any additional stuff on of HG is just so unfair, hope it passes quickly for you. I finally shoke off the viral infection after 12 days and my LO is finally well again but now just teething. Sadly HG is still here. Im 17wks today.
Mop - when i had them alone didnt do anything for me. But hoping maybe with the Ondanstron it might help with the nausea feeling?
Spandau - Sorry to hear your stomach is still giving you grief. Mine is still feeling funny. But not as bad when i actually eat now since i started 2 rantidine a day. I try drinking a glass of milk when i can face it as helps settle my stomach a bit from the acidy feeling or a milky tea.
Icant - hope things at the hospital have improved.

spandau1980 · 24/11/2015 18:44

Cyclizine x3 and ondanstron 8mg x 3 is fine
So one cyclizine ain't gonna hurt
Consultant approved :)

I give up with stomach feeling like a perpetual washing machine
Had some food this pm and bam Bak to stuck in throat horrible feeling .... tried milk but no joy
I'm on rantidine but may need omeprazole was on nexium b4 preg ... strong one so not surprised I'm having it bad ...
Shoop I'm worried about keeping my a d down too because they need to stay in the system consistently to work properly ...

Dunno what goal iv got now as was crawling towards 16 weeks thinking yay I'll be better...
But no
Maybe 20 weeks ??
If this lasts longer than 20 weeks I don't really know what I'll do.. as my OH says it's a bit tough now you've gotta see it out ...
GREAT

LucindaE · 24/11/2015 18:53

Ican't How are you? I hope a tiny bit better.
Reebok Poor you; a cold, commuting, sciatica and Hyperemesis. Much sympathy. The cold going round seems to be a particularly nasty one. It's amazing how those who are teachers on here manage to teach with this thing. You deserve a break, and I am so hoping you don't have a 27 hour labour this time on top of everything else.
Charlie Lots of women on here have been on a combination of cyclizine and ondansetron, and say they work well together when all else is failing, but I don't know about the doses myself.
spandau and shoop Being off anti depressants must be tough, when it is normal to feel fairly desperate with Hyperemesis anyway. I think you must both put on the bravest of faces on it from your posts. Good advice to Charlie about combining cyclizine and ondansetron. Lol about preferring the idea of giving birth every week to Hyperemesis. Those crawling babies are a menace; you are right to feel the need to be on your guard.
Charlie At eight months my daughter climbed on and fell off the television when I was out of the room for one minute. Did she want to be on television? Terrible joke.
MotherofPearl I love elderflower water, and think it is a good cure for indigestion of a normal sort, so who knows, maybe it has some minimal effect on Hyperemesis? Sorry you've had a cold too.
amysmummy Sorry to hear of dry heaving in lieu of bile run. Not fun either. I don't know which is worst.
Did someone mention acid indigestion as sickness receded? Sorry, I can't read my handwriting again. That and the swollen feeling are dismal.
Thickhead, I keep forgetting the name of that excellent anti heartburn stuff GP's recommend.
squeezed I'm so glad you are signed off.
Sorry if I've rudely ignored anyone/cross posted.

Reebok · 24/11/2015 18:59

Mop glad you've had a vom
Free day! You really deserve it.

Spandau it sounds like your reflux is aggravating the hg. Mine was really bad too until I started on omprazole as the ranitidine didn't touch the reflux. Get yourself on it and within a week I'm sure the reflux will calm down and hopefully help you feel less gaggy.

Charlie I was originally on cyclizine and ondansetron 4mg too...both 3 times a day. The cyclizine made me feel worse so I came off it. I think if you have one on top of your ondansetron it will be fine. Can't guarantee it will take away the nausea though!

Shoop just wanted to give you a big hug. You're doing brilliantly Hun. Keep venting to us. Hoping hg clears for you soon.

Baby has been kicking away lots today. It's making me feel a little happier despite still being sick at almost 18 weeks. I feel like I'm doing this for a reason now. Feels a little more like I have a baby in me and not an alien (hopefully!) DD kicked me earlier exactly where I've been feeling movement. Really hurt and had me a little worried but baby has been moving since. Bless dd she apologized to 'her baby' and kissed my tummy. She didn't mean it...just got a little over excited. Dying for weekend already. I'm so shattered from working. I feel like I just want to sleep forever. Sorry for the long essay!

Reebok · 24/11/2015 19:03

Thanks Lucinda...in all honesty I would take another 27 hour labour anyway over hyperemesis!

Re the acid indigestion as hg subsides, that's what happened to me in pregnancy with dd. hyperemesis disappeared and I was suddenly struck by acid indigestion but it was manageable in comparison to the awful hg.

LucindaE · 24/11/2015 19:22

Reebok Poor DD and poor you. I think a pregnant woman has to hurt herself quite badly for the baby to be damaged, because of the fluids surrounding him/her - I knew a woman who was doing decorating and fell on her belly across a chair and all was fine. I do hope the sickness lifts soon. i remember that terrible acid indigestion taking over from sickness, and as you say you can live with it, but it is miserable.

OP posts:
spandau1980 · 24/11/2015 19:24

Gonna get something stronger for acid reflux. Wanna feel like me again . I know I felt rough at end of preg with dd but I didn't throw up past 16 weeks and all sickness gone by 20 weeks but I'm still being sick and feeling really rubbish ... poor kids and oh I kept saying by 16 weeks I'll be better ect ect ..
Ha bloody ha ..
My boobs are so ooo sore too like someone's cut the nippers off lol
Never had such sore boobs ....
This baby s gonna be hard work me thinks !!!

shoopshoopsong · 24/11/2015 20:41

Thank you all for the support, reading it has helped, and also this article I read today made me feel less lonely. I'm not sure if I've linked it correctly

Reebok your DD sounds such a darling kissing 'her baby' better afterwards.

Spandau sympathy on the boob front too - for me that doesn't kick in til later usually but I remember it being a very annoying kind of pain!

Can I also ask, has anyone been offered an extra 3rd scan because of HG? I've had a letter for a 3rd one at 26weeks and am surprised.
