Changing bag for a new daddy

DC1 due in January so for christmas I'm putting together a 'daddy changing bag' which I think he will love!!

So far I've got a manly changing bag, wipes, bum cream, travel change mat, lip balm, an emergency bar of galaxy, chewing gum & a costa gift card so he can go for a coffee.

What else would you put in for your DP?

Take no notice of the people who posted simply to sneer, why even comment to say it's not a gift you'd give? The question was what to put in it not should you buy one.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but I always carry a spare dummy in case dd flings hers when I'm not looking, change of clothes and for a January baby a spare hat/gloves as they often get thrown too.

GladysTheGolem · 15/11/2015 17:27

Also this book; First-Time Parent: The honest guide to coping brilliantly and staying sane in your baby's first year www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0007269447/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_YamswbJHJSQ7E
It's brilliant, shame the writer didn't have 2 & then 3, could've used it!

We have 3 under 4 and I just shove everything in the Boots free bag.

HSMMaCM · 15/11/2015 17:33

Fatty - snot sucker - great idea. That should make him laugh Grin.

Artandco · 15/11/2015 17:48

Fatty - wow That is a lot. I'm not sure what I did wrong then, I had two under 15 months and like I said a few nappies and wipes max were fine. I couldn't have carried all that around tbh as usually had smallest in sling, and older toddling along on reins, so just a small handbag worked well

MrsAukerman · 15/11/2015 17:53

I think if you use slings primarily (like us) you, out of necessity, carry less and cope just fine.

FattyNinjaOwl · 15/11/2015 17:57

art as I said I can easily be out for entire days, and if I had a poo explosion, or if DD decided to pour juice all over herself, I would rather have clothes ready than have to go and buy some, same as if they need anything else. Especially nappies as I can only use one brand of nappies on DD or she gets a sore bum. Most of it is the little travel sized pots, I feel for me its needed. Obviously not everyone is the same. It would be my luck to go out without something and have to buy it. (This has happened before!)

SnozzberryPie · 15/11/2015 18:03

How about a nice pac a mac waterproof jacket type thing, I have one in my change bag for the inevitable downpour while I'm out with dd, as you can't push a buggy and carry an umbrella!

heavenlypink · 15/11/2015 18:06

Paracetamol Pro-plus Red Bull other energy drinks are available

dylsmimi · 15/11/2015 18:06

I think it's a nice idea and good to start the excitement of the new baby!
I would add a small toy for the baby - we had one that clipped onto the pram (or bag) and played music - very handy
And a 'dirty/wet bag' we had an avent one but not sure where it came from and a persil one - obviously free from somewhere! Just handy to shove wet clothes or Muslins While on the way home without them soaking all the rest of the bag. I tipped everything out into the wash and then threw the bag in. A small wet bag for reusable nappies would work but not sure if expensive
I think the Costa card is great - for those Hmm faces - my friend gave our mutual friend exactly that on the birth of her second and it was very well received ! We spent lots of time drinking coffee in a warm coffee shop so not sure why ops dh would be any different!

dylsmimi · 15/11/2015 18:11

Toy like this www.mamasandpapas.com/product-babyplay-jangly-lion/7558827XD/type-i/
With music and a teether - handy for quick distraction when in queues !

Candlefairy101 · 15/11/2015 18:27

I saw this one the other day!

I think it's a good idea. I would put nappy sacks in (supermarket basic cost about 9p) hand sanitizer (I agree you do need to wash hands properly but sometimes there isn't any soap in public loos) USB phone charger and pack of tissues.

5hell · 15/11/2015 19:10

Just asked dh and he thought it's a nice idea :) and his suggestion is a mini lego kit for when (optimistically) baby is sleeping while he sips his Costa ;)

Also clean t shirt and hand gel.

Disclaimer. ..I'm only 20w so have no actual experience Grin

mackinnonka · 15/11/2015 19:19

I think its a great idea, given that its you or husband actually using the bag (not the baby and therefore doesn't need to be centred on the baby's gender), it should be something you feel comfortable with carrying and is convenient for you so him having his own will help him to organise things as he wants them and get into a routine etc.

E.g a woman might like a handbag style maybe, and maybe a rucksack style for a man.

Not sure what sort of things you might need to add to it, but maybe some nappy disposal bags, tissues (there aren't always hand towels in changing areas), a toy or something to keep baby amused whilst changing.

The personal items for him are good idea too, I wouldnt see them 'treats' for doing it but comforts that we would also carry in our own bags.

RoTo72 · 15/11/2015 19:36

I'm looking forward to oh (who will be 50 next march and this is his first dc) walking around with an obvious baby changing bag. Lol. But that's just my mean streak. Cant believe a changing bag caused so much controversy. Each to their own. Xx

LucyMouse · 15/11/2015 19:47

OP I just wanted to say this is a lovely idea! I had a very flowery changing bag which I also used as a handbag, and DH had a plain black freebie from Boots. We used this bag whenever grandparents were babysitting and I didn't want to risk them not taking proper care of my own rather expensive bag.
Travel mug, teething powder sachets and maybe some Calpol sachets are good little extras, aside from the obvious wipes and nappies.

ejclementine · 17/11/2015 20:44

Aww I feel bad that you came here excited about your gift idea and everyone has given it a bashing. You haven't said its all he's getting for Christmas either - everyone's just making assumptions. I'd agree re. hand gel and maybe some nappy bags. :)

rosieliveson1 · 17/11/2015 20:50

My DH has his own bag. It had similar contents to mine but is a plain navy one whereas mine is a handbag style one and it's just for me.
We carry most of what he already been shared plus a pack of tissues, small mirror, nurofen sachets for baby and a spare set of house keys just in case!

outputgap · 17/11/2015 21:00

I think it's a sweet idea. Just wanted to second the pacapod inner bag(s). One of those is the solution to running two bags. Just move the inner bag. Plus you can hang it straight off the pushchair if you become one of these admirable people who can manage with a few essentials.

Cheshirehello79 · 18/11/2015 01:27

I think it's a wonderful idea and there's some people who've missed the point why you're trying to do it and looking at it logically.

Well as a lovely gesture I would get a nice
i love my daddy all in one or vests too seen lovely ones in next.
Get a key ring that he can put picture of him and baby when born
And all the other essential stuff for nappy bag as already mentioned by others

I think is a lovely Christmas present :-)

winchester1 · 18/11/2015 05:45

art mine are also close in age and I often just have a spare nappy out with me but it wouldn't occur to me to question what you to take out. Why would I / you care tbh?

Jem01 · 18/11/2015 06:27

A lovely idea OP, really thoughtful and I'm sure he'll love it Smile

purplefizz26 · 18/11/2015 07:20

You are getting a bit of a hard time over a bloody bag OP, some people just have to sneer at things they wouldn't necessarily do.

Sounds like a thoughtful idea to me!

Stepawayfromthezebras · 18/11/2015 07:33

It's a nice idea OP Smile my DP will be taking SPL to look after our little one and so far I've got as far as whittling down our changing bag shortlist to a retro sports style flight bag or a canvas rucksack. Haven't got as far as thinking about the contents, too interested in shopping for bags Grin

Everythinggettingbigger · 18/11/2015 12:13

its your first child i'm sure he's just as excited as you are and I think its a really lovely idea! I'm a bit baffled by all the really negative and some quite frankly mean comments. My DS1 bag was navy so wasn't a problem, but my friend who had a DD her bag was all pink and flowery and her DP refused to carry it and just stashed the stuff in a back pack, but even so I think its a really good idea as its usually mostly mum making the decisions etc so for dad to have something that's his is great! My cousin is due any day and just made her DH a "daddy survival kit" with kind of the same stuff, just a bit jokey really but some really useful stuff in there! she had the babyshower where she was given gifts for post pregnancy, so nice for him to receive something too.

Congratulations on your DC and I hope your DH loves it!
