Changing bag for a new daddy

DC1 due in January so for christmas I'm putting together a 'daddy changing bag' which I think he will love!!

So far I've got a manly changing bag, wipes, bum cream, travel change mat, lip balm, an emergency bar of galaxy, chewing gum & a costa gift card so he can go for a coffee.

What else would you put in for your DP?

And howtorebuild - a brief case is hardly suitable for repurposing as a bag for a day out with a baby or toddler!!

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 15/11/2015 15:29

I bought dp a satchel a few years ago for carrying his laptop and notebooks around in cos his old one was on its last legs. He did bung wipes, nappies and a bottle of milk in when he had the DSes so it was kinda co-opted as a change bag.

I gave him a tardis keyring which got added to one of the buckles. He's got a mini pop vinyl David tennant the year after which went on next to the tardis. So maybe a keyring?

Travelcard holder? Travel mug? One of those bag for life things that fold up really small?

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 15/11/2015 15:31

Oh and maybe one of those carabiner hooks for clipping bags to the pram?

howtorebuild · 15/11/2015 15:34

a brief case is hardly suitable for repurposing as a bag for a day out with a baby or toddler!

Agreed, why did you think that was a point that needed making? Confused It's a bit like stating the sky is blue.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 15/11/2015 15:35

In my changing bag right now I have

Nappies
Wipes
Tissues
Nappy sacks
A couple of vests
A couple of sleepsuits
A steribottle
A ready to drink milk carton
Chewing gum
Deoderant
A clean top for me (my baby throws up a lot)
A couple of muslins
A travel sewing kit
A first aid kit with a couple of sachets of calpol in it too
A magnet
3 oxo cubes Confused
Half a milky way

I'm not suggesting I use half of these things or know why they are in there, but this is the crap I carry about on a daily basis.

Hope your DP likes his gift, it sounds very thoughtful I'm going to clean my bag out now

ChunkyPickle · 15/11/2015 15:37

I don't get it - we just had a bag by the door that whoever had the baby took with them..

But it contained: Wipes, nappies (5ish), a little towel or two (the 50p ikea ones - like skinny teatowels), a clothes change, a tiny pot of cream, nappy bags and/or ziplocks. Once the baby was older, there was also generally some kind of snack in it too, and perhaps a drink, sunblock sometimes (or hat)

I wouldn't do the hand sanitiser - for the kind of stuff you're dealing with when changing a baby, hand sanitiser just doesn't cut it - you need to wash your hands.

HSMMaCM · 15/11/2015 15:40

DH would have loved this idea. I agree with the travel mug and a change of clothes and plenty of wipes for him and baby. We have a unisex rucksack that we share and has everything for both of us.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 15/11/2015 15:41

Elsa, 3 oxo cubes?!?!?!

Charitygirl1 · 15/11/2015 15:41

God, people are being such joyless knobs. Obviously he doesn't need things like a Galaxy or gum, but OP wants treaty/funny/useful things to put in because he'll be opening it on Xmas day. It's called fun. On that theme OP, if you have a cinema near you that does Big Scream showings, you could put a voucher in there for that.

And for those saying 'how often will he be on his own with the baby?' - bloody hell, how useless were your husbands/martyred were you? I exclusively bf for 6months and my husband still took babies out for hours at a time without me.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 15/11/2015 15:43

Elsa, 3 oxo cubes?!?!?!

I wish I could tell you, I really don't know, I don't even use oxo cubes when I'm in the house let alone when I'm out and about Confused

BlueEyedPersephone · 15/11/2015 15:45

It is a lovely and good idea, I recommend two pacapod inner pods, one changing, one milk/food and then you can get a rucksack for him and chose a lush outer for yourself, thereby not duplicating kit, it is nice to think of each other, wish me and exdh had moreWine

BlueEyedPersephone · 15/11/2015 15:47

And for the inside in addition to above, an emergency £10, and couple of £1 coins and a really thin tshirt for when the vomit gets him

FreeWorker1 · 15/11/2015 15:48

Ehh........?

Changing bag for a new Daddy?

I suggest you keep it small, simple and well stocked!

Foldable changing mat, wipes, disposable nappies (sod the environment), Sudocrem (zinc cream), scented plastic bags for storing/disposing of stuff.

I still recall (as a fairly new Dad) changing DS1 in the cramped toile of an Intercity 125 train.

The train tilted as it sped round a corner, DS1 with nappy off, did a wee at that exact moment, it ran along the changing mat up the back of his baby grow, into his hair then the nappy fell on the floor along with wipes and all. I was struggling to hold a wet baby on a mat moving like sled while grappling among with the unmentionable sludge of train toilet floor trying to retrieve it all.

As General Colin Powell said " No battle plan survives contact with the enemy" .

villainousbroodmare · 15/11/2015 15:49

Lovely idea.
Biscuit Biscuit biscuit] to the Hmm Hmm Hmm brigade.

This is what's in my bag:
Large ziplock bag containing about 6 nappies and about ten folded up sheets of kitchen paper
Spare nappy in the zip compartment
Travel changing mat
Nappy bags
Normal pack of wipes and mini pack (pop into handbag with one or two nappies for quick trip)
Bum cream
Sun cream (we live in South Africa)
Two changes of clothes for baba and clean t shirt for me
Hat
Muslin
Swaddle
Soother
Big voile scarf for sunshade/ emergency swaddle/ blanket
A toy
A lipstick
A pen
A bit of money

FreeWorker1 · 15/11/2015 15:50

Oh and do remember, whatever storage bag it is all in needs to be portable and possible to open with ONE HAND.

Artandco · 15/11/2015 15:53

Villa - do you actually take all that out every time you leave the house?

Personally I just had a small zip bag ( like a food bag size but material), added 3 nappies, a few wipes and some nappy bags. That's it. That then got thrown into whatever bag was going out

Frankie2015 · 15/11/2015 15:54

Ahh what a lovely idea for a present!!

GladysTheGolem · 15/11/2015 15:54

Pen & notepad (shopping lists, giving your number to people if you don't fancy adding them on Facebook/don't have phone to hand).

I always have an emergency £20 incase I need a taxi & something to eat.

Fold up small bags for life if he's getting the shopping in too.

ppandj · 15/11/2015 15:55

I really like this idea OP. Sod whether it's the done thing or not. I'd maybe put a small portable toy in for your DC to play with, seeing as you said after 15 weeks it will be mainly used. A particular favourite of DS's at that age was the Sophie giraffe but the softer one with a ring- not the actual giraffe. It's a good size and provides emergency distraction.

ppandj · 15/11/2015 15:57

Oh and Lidl at the moment have one of those Milton dummy sterilising orb things.

brookeberry · 15/11/2015 15:57

ickle I think that's a lovely Christmas present for an excited new parent to be! Very thoughtful and I'm sure he'll love it.

FattyNinjaOwl · 15/11/2015 16:13

Me and my DP think thus is a genius idea.
We have a very large change bag that just gets left on the pram. We don't drive so it gets hooked over the handles and left there so we share.
But in there we have

5 nappies for DD
5 nappies for DS
Wipes
Nappy bags
Spare clothes for both
Travel change mat
Tissues
Sudocreme
Bonjela
Plasters
Bobbles for DD
Anti-bac hand gel
Tommee tippee steriser wipes.
Spare dummy
DDs travel cup for juice
Squirty juice thing (so I can just get water as its cheaper)
Crayons and small pad
3 Bibs
And then bottles for DS get put in the pockets on the way out.

villainousbroodmare · 15/11/2015 16:19

It sounds like an enormous amount, doesn't it? I do, but it mostly stays in the car and I take the same as you in my handbag - 2 nappies, mini pack of wipes, couple of thin plastic nappy bags.

FattyNinjaOwl · 15/11/2015 16:27

I do carry a lot, but with 2 under 2 and when I can easily spend 6 hours out of the house, its needed.

FattyNinjaOwl · 15/11/2015 16:30

I've also just added snot sucker for the babies nose (he's stuffy)
And a tin of Vaseline for my lips.
