Sugar in urine - did it happen to you?

I have always had sugar in urine when pg; last pregnancy I was threatened with a GTT but fortunately the blood tests put me within normal limits. However this is the first time I have tested positive for sugar so early on in pregnancy. And tbh I am not eating very much that is sugary!!

Anything I can do to prevent it getting worse? Is there a possibility of this developing into GD? Can I avoid it?

Not worried as such at this stage, more wondering ...

I'm no expert, but one of my books (which I was reading about this yesterday) said that when women are pregnancy it creates a kinda "anti-insulin" affect so there is enough glucose in the bloodstream for mom and baby. Sometimes there is too much sugar in the bloodstream and the kidneys don't process it and it spills into the urine.

It is a totally naturally normal thing, that your body is supposed to do.

If you don't have any other symptoms or history of diabetes or gestational diabetes and your tests come back normal don't worry to much.

If you're not eating too much sugar (carbs included) you should be fine.

I hope this helps.

Thanks MKG. I just wasn't sure if it might be a precursor to GD, particularly as it has started so early this time.

I was tested with dd for gd and it came back negative.
This pregnancy I was tested for gd at around 28 weeks and it came back negative BUT the week before the test and the week after I had sugar in my urine......
MW wanted to send me for a gtt but I told her I was awaiting results of one already!! Anyway she told me to cut back on sugar etc which I do find hard when pregnant..must admit it worried me slightly, I did start a thread around 3 weeks ago but was told to relax as it can be normal..TBH it worried me that my kidneys would fail me esp in labour iykwim (ie to much strain on them..)

Due back to mw next week so will see then..My diet btw is quite healthy BUT I do need the odd treat at night..

MKG, thats quite positive post to read. Thanks. xx

Shhhh, thanks for that. Did you have sugar in urine right from the start?

I don't think I did..well noone ever mentioned it..I can't remember if I had sugar with dd BUT with this pregnancy I think the 1st time it was noticed was around 27 weeks when I saw my gp for back pain etc. He found sugar and sent the sample away but another sample was needed, this sample came back fine BUT the mw I saw the following week found sugar again ....so suppose its been on 2 occasions..

Just one big worry isn't it.?! I;m 32 weeks and huge so petrified baby will be big because of this..How far gone are you.?

BTW I was told all I can do is reduce sugar etc but according the mw who did my gtt she said that not all women who test positive for sugar in urine go on to develop gd. Opposite to what my gp had told me BUT then again I know who I trust more...

When I was pg with ds I tested +ve for sugar every time after about 16 weeks iirc. I am only 8 weeks pg atm! Am on my fourth pg now and never had GD before. Hope I don't this time!

well hopefully you won't get it this time. Like I said, I was told that just because you test positive for sugar doesn't mean you will get gd.

I know what you mean though, sometimes you wonder if something is made of nothing iykwim or it is will be a cause for concern.

4th pregnancy!! (4th baby I presume.?) Congrats..! This is only my 2nd (although 4th pregnancy due to x2 mc's)..intended to have a family of 5 kids but.... Its hard work this pregnancy lark

Miaou · 08/12/2006 21:35

yes fourth baby! The others are 9,8 and 16m so the older ones don't need much looking after .

crumbs..! Good ages and esp the 16 month old. Come 7 months time they will be 23 months which hopefully will be ideal..DD was 11 months when we got pregnant and it seemed ideal..a nice content baby who didn't "do much" LOL now at 32 weeks dd is an active independant into all sorts 18 month old toddler..! Must admit I do find it hard esp being the size of some whale..!

If only we knew then what we know now..!!! BUT wouldn't change her for the world.
