Diet coke - how bad is it? [confused]

Hi all, I'm 8 weeks, and suffering from morning sickness. I usually never drink coke, but diet coke seems to be the only thing getting me through the day, especially the journey into and back from work. Is it really awful for me and the baby? I feel guilty, but dont know what else to turn to? Help!

Rufus- yep, that's believable. Either you're really gullible or you think we're stupid.

I drank SHITLOADS of orange squash that contains aspartame in my pregnancy, from reading the internet I was concerned my baby would come out a mutant but I have a gorgeous perfect week old dd sleeping next to me right now.

OP, if you're feeling rough then you do whatever you need to do to get you through the day. Being pregnant is tough and the very last thing you need is someone peddling bullshit about dead rats!

As with so many other things in life, 'everything in moderation'.

I was addicted to Pepsi-max before becoming pregnant and so the caffeine levels is something I've looked into a lot ;) I had no issues stopping smoking/drinking/eating Brie from the second I found out but PepsiMax was hard

200 is what they suggest per day, and there is around 50 in a can of diet and 45 in a can of non diet. That's a litre you can safely drink, if avoiding all other caffeine based products.

I'm having two cans a day, and it is saving me from all sickness symptoms and is my twice daily treat :) my MW even suggested freezing cold Diet Coke as a good sickness remedy.

I'm very sorry about the rats, poor things but I don't expect they just had the equivalent of one can or even two cans of diet drink a day...

Full fat coke is gross and leaves a furry layer on your teeth, bleurrrggghh.

Diet coke is fine provided you watch the caffeine. I didn't realise there was so much caffeine in it, so was drinking up to two (individual) bottles a day before realising that was too much (though I had no other caffeine on top).

Now I will have EITHER one small coffee with dark chocolate, OR dark chocolate with one diet coke.

The stuff about artificial sweeteners is just total bullshit to be honest. It's like anything - if you absolutely pump yourself full of it, it's never going to be great. However, all the horror stories are put out there by the sugar industry.

There is no scientific evidence that a aspartame causes harm to you or baby. Just keep an eye on the total caffeine you are consuming per day. I enjoy a Diet Coke most days. Helps with nausea.

OP, if it gets you through the day, then it gets you through the day. I lived on fizzy sweets and lemonade between weeks 8-15 when my morning sickness was at its height!

emmac3616 · 15/11/2015 17:16

I drank it all through my first pregnancy (at least 1 can a day) and DS is fine! I've given it up this time round but that's actually because I gave it up anyway for me teeth (dentist told me how bad fizzy drinks in general are) and my stomach (i had a suspected ulcer and gastroenterologist told me it was "the devil incarnate" - which seems a little strong!). I wouldn't worry about it though from a baby perspective - its not that good for you but i think there are FAR worse things you could be doing for baby!
