Nursery essentials/desirables

We moved into a new house a few weeks ago, and creating the nursery is the next task. We can't afford to spend much, I'm just after a list of essentials really. We are having a crib donated and I have a rocking chair. Any suggestions welcome :)

Somewhere to store clothes - drawers ideally as from toddlers you want them to be able to get own things out which they can't in a wardrobe

I think that's it isn't it? ( mine just had a changing mat thrown on top of our drawers, and used a drawer we had clothes in and emptied one out. And shared our bed as all in one room)

Basically if your making a nursery remember baby shouldn't be sleeping in their alone until over 6 months anyway, so it's better to make sure everything works for a small
Child rather than baby as that's when it gets the most use. Some lidded baskets are good for toy storage later on

We got 99% of stuff second hand, the nursery has cost us a total of £200 including cot, crib, Moses basket, New mattresses for all 3, drawers, wardrobe, changing mat and shelves.

We had DC1s room set up as a spare room so double bed and a cot until she was well over a year. We did have a few toys in there and books on the bookcase but primarily due to space it was a spare room with a cot in it. We had the changing table out in the hall and under that we had baskets with her clothes in it as no space for drawers/cupboard in her room.

At over a year we changed it so it was her room. We put the change table in her room - next to the window as it smells and this is set up with nappies, medicines, muslins etc. We don't have a formal seat but a big pile of cushions on the floor to chill out on and do stories. The bookcase is full of books, and ikea expedit fabric boxes for her toys and other bits. She has a chest of drawers with clothes and a small table set up with toys to play at when we play upstairs.

The little one I nanny for had her cot in the spare room for a long time and no real nursery however when we finally got it set up, we had;

• a change table in there -however this would be fine elsewhere - we had it in the hall for a while
• her cot
• a big pile of cushions to snuggle on
• a big book case, full of books, it also holds photos of her and family members and some toys

Big chest of drawers for the clothes, can put a change mat on top if needed.

A soft rug.

Some shelves for the trinkety gifts/soft toys/book sets you will no doubt be given.

I also bought a large wall sticker freize thingy, but I'm not going to worry about too much else now as I realise baby will be a bit oblivious for a while!
