Increased nuchal concern

I'm 35 and nearly 16 weeks pg. Went for my nuchal scan at 12 wks and they found the measurement to be 3.5mm, bloods were fine but overall risk was increased so I had a CVS, which turned out to be normal. I went back a week later for the cardio scan, and the cardiologist couldn?t find anything abnormal either. So now I've got to wait till the 20 week scan to see if anything else could be wrong, but I don?t know what else they would be looking for as no-one has really explained it all, and I never got the chance to talk it though with a consultant. Is there less chance of something being wrong with my baby now, or is it increased because the CVS and cardio scan were ok? What else can a high nuchal measurement mean? Any advice greatly appreciated - I've hardly told anyone I'm pregnant cos I'm so worried about having to terminate at 20 weeks.

{{{hugs}}} for you hunny, you sound really stressed. I can't really advise but I think you should phone your midwife, and talk through your concerns with her. She should be able to tell you what it all means and help you to understand the tests. Good luck.

If you don't get any joy from your MW you could try www.arc-uk.org

As the others have said, call your mw, she won't mind even if you hardly know here.

I had a similar experience with ds1 - high risk nuchal scan, had cvs and then followed up by cardio scan and further cardio scans at 20 weeks. I asked lots of questions (3rd baby) and they said that the cardio stuff was all very precautionary and really not to worry at all once the CVS results came through as ok. Honestly, don't worry call the mw or consultant they are just covering themselves.

DS was totally fine, by the way.

Thanks for your suggestions - I called the ante natal results helpline who were so nice and very reassuring and I'm feeling a bit happier and more positive now! So thanks.

Do you think that there might not be a link at all

the 20 week scan is also known as the abnormality scan ..

your nuchal scan only checks for possibility of Down's Syndrome which you have already ruled out .. you have also ruled out any cardio issues

Do you think that maybe because of the stress you've just been through in the early stages you might be worrying unduly?

Phoebebaby · 11/12/2006 10:56

Well maybe i am worrying unduly, but it's kind of hard not to when the consultants tell you they can't give you any kind of all clear till 20 weeks. And the increased nuchal can indicate other kinds of problems apart from Downs, like growth problems etc. Anyway fingers crossed.
