Why should coffee be kept to a minimum in pregnancy?, I have reduced the amount that I drink but am not sure what harm drinking alot would do anyway.

caffeine

drink decaff if you can't live without it although the thought of coffee made me sick in the first trimester!

Have a look at this .

Research has shown it increases the risk of miscarriage and other ill effects.

I drank decaff and didn't really mind. I allowed myself one caffeinated cup per day though.

None of the data is completely proven, but it's thought that more than a couple of cups of coffee a day (so one cup if you drink a "grande" in the morning) might affect risk of miscarriage, cause low birth weight etc. Some studies have also seemed to disproved this, however.

The other thing is that as you pass everything to the foetus, and caffeine affects your metabolism and heart rate; there's no reason to believe that it doesn't affect the baby and it's obviously not good to give a baby a caffeine "high".

The guidelines always seem to be "On the safe side". A couple of regular coffees in a day is deemed to be fine.

I never drink coffee, but have been very keen on fresh coffee this preg
1-3 cups of fresh home brew every week and maybe a cappucino if I'm out with dp for lunch.
Otherwise I prefer tea which I kepe to 2-3 cups a day

THanks for the info. I went off coffee for a few weeks whilst I felt sick but really crave it again now and I am 18 weeks. I drink strong filter coffee but try to limit myself to 2 cups a day. Maybe I will have to buy some decaff filter coffee and give that a go. I have been quite dilligent at watching what I eat as you are given this long list of things to avoid but no one actually explains the reasons or the consequences of not following advice. I am glad that I now know why.
