new mattress cover for new baby or just new mattress?

Having a new baby in next few months and I still have the cribs and cots from last time. I'm buying new mattresses but wonder, is the advice to buy new covers for them too? They're the plastic, wash down ones (or go in the machine) with a sort of mesh over the plastic on one side (Mothercare).

I don't want to take a risk but if they're considered safe, it seems crazy to buy new for no reason (and they look new, not a mark on them and perfectly clean). Thanks anyone who knows something!

New mattresses. You don't know what mould is lurking in the internal soft fibres, just waiting for a warm body to help it spread.

It's recommended that you get new mattresses for each baby, even between siblings.

She already said she is buying new ones. If the covers are washable then I would reuse them.

Tbh I reused the mattress dd had for ds as it had a removable washable cover and the mattress itself was waterproof and could also be cleaned

First two posters missing the question there.

I assume only new mattresses, because they can't be washed, whereas covers can. Have no "official" advice on this though.

Thanks for the replies so far. Yes, I'm definitely getting new mattresses.

Tending towards reusing the covers, though, based on your comments and Googling coming up with no official advice about covers needing replacing. They go through the washing machine fine.

Any other comments welcome - thanks all! :)

Covers should be fine after a wash, congrats on the new baby :)

Forgot to add, Starfish, that I'm in exactly the same situation - been offered a used Moses basket and used cotbed. Replacing both mattresses but using second-hand covers. Was advised I could use the old mattresses if there's a nighttime accident and we need to swap mattresses just for the wee hours (no pun intended), but I'm a bit reluctant!

There is a lower risk in using mattresses for a sibling and a slightly raised risk in using one from another family so I wouldn't use one from someone else but was happy to reuse dd's for ds.

We've bought new mattresses for the new baby for the moses basket and for the pram carrycot. I kept hold of the ones we used for dd but they have been in the loft for a couple of years with god knows what kind of mould and dust particles floating around, so I've decided to throw them out.

However, mattress covers I will definitely reuse as they can go through the washing machine - I wouldn't see it as any different to using second hand blankets and baby grows.
