excuses for giving up alcohol

DP and I are both thinking of giving up alcohol to TTC. What are the best excuses for not drinking? I imagine we'll be comfortable telling some people why, but not others. We don't have a car so can't use driving as an excuse. Got lots of weddings, hen dos etc. this year so going to need a good excuse!

Don't say anything! Just don't drink. There seems to be a charity sober month pretty much every month if my FB is anything to go by, so use that if you need an excuse. or my friends are all lushes and make them up

I just wouldn't say anything. Go to the bar to get your drink and make it a lemonade/Coke/tonic with ice and a slice and your sorted. People will assume you are drinking.

I'm more thinking about a weekend with the girls that I have coming up. Some are doctors so I need a foolproof excuse if it's medical because I will get quizzed!

Say that you did that October stop drinking thing (sorry, name escapes me) and realised you felt much healthier without alcohol, so just decided to stick with it.

You don't need an actual reason, or excuse, just say you've decided to stop for a while.

Low carb/low sugar diet.

Turn up to the event looking a bit pasty and tell them you've got a massive hangover and you think you will vomit all over the bride to be's shoes if you see other drink again!

Tbh, nothing says 'Pregnant or TTC' more than a woman coming up with excuses not to drink!

I went on a hen do with doctors and I got rumbled within about 2 minutes.

But doctors also know how sensitive this time is so whilst they'll twig they'll probably be gracious enough not to say anything

I know a few people with babies born in October who said they'd given up booze for lent. That won't work though if you're ttc now though!

I cut down on booze for sport training reasons and noone raised an eyebrow (but then, they saw me training/competing, so if you were going to use this as an excuse, you'd need to be exercising). By the time I actually stopped drinking altogether when I fell pregnant, nobody noticed because I'd become a bit of a bore on the booze front anyway.

That being said, you don't need any excuses. Cutting down on booze is a Good Thing! Ignore people's comments and well done!

You are trying to lose a bit of weight and you are on slimming world, and alcohol has so many syns, you'd rather have chocolate!!

I think metronidazole antibiotics cant mix with alcohol. You take it for vag infections, so hopefully there wont be too many questions asked....

Depends on how well the doctors know you. I sniff people out fairly quickly but will shut up if I think it needs to be a secret. One option is to choose a medic to be an ally which will support you.

Metronidazole definitely stops you from boozing - rather than announce that you could ask one of them " is it true you can't drink on antibiotics"?

They will invariably ask which one and then advise you to steer clear. You could consolidate this by asking of half a glass of prosecco for a toast is ok (it's not) then they would strongly back you up. Tell then it's for BV as a dental abscess would have other symptoms.

Or tell one you are up the duff and ask them to collude to keep a secret if you trust them. ..

Frankly, you can't go to a hen party and not drink without offering an excuse. I wouldn't worry about having a few drinks at a hen party or wedding while merely TTC. You'll need to save all your excuses for when you're actually pregnant.

Have just re- read you're giving up to ttc - truthfully, I wouldn't bother. As long as you don't go mad it's fine.

TTC can take a long time and I really wouldn't put your life on hold

If you absolutely want to give up drinking then fair enough but as someone said, you are better off saving your excuses until you are actually pregnant

Maybe limit yourself to 3 drinks max, vodka lime and soda is good because you can order lime and soda when no one is with you at the bar then pace your 3 vodka ones when you are ordering with people,
