Bleed at 18 weeks

I'm 18 weeks ish with DC2. Woke up for a wee at 5am today and when I wiped lots and lots of red fresh blood. Midwife sent me to hospital and few more gushes of red blood - enough to soak through a couple of pads over the course of the morning. Similar amounts to a period I suppose.

Scan showed healthy heartbeat and speculum exam showed my cervix is closed. Bleed then turned to brown old blood and slowed down. They asked me to stay in for bed rest for the rest of the morning and afternoon to make sure it had settled.

Came home and straight to bed but just feeling a bit low and freaked out. I had a MMC earlier this year and I think that's on my mind too.

Has anyone had a bleed at this sort of gestation?

Poor you, how frightening. Flowers

Almost exactly the same happened to me and I am delighted to say the little blighter turns 1 next week. If you are still feeling wobbly, ask for another appointment either for a scan or heartbeat listen-in, just so that you can set your mind to rest a little bit.

Hope you manage to get some rest.

I haven't experienced this personally but my uncles step daughter had a huge bleed at 18 or 19 weeks. She's currently 30 weeks and all is fine.

I don't know too much information about it, just that it was a huge bleed but her baby seemed fine. Hope this is reassuring for you.

I had it with dc2. Scanned me and all was fine. Took swabs, all fine. Just told me to put my feet up. I worked out that I would have been on my period if not pregnant, but who knows what it was. She's two now. Take it easy.

How terrifying for you. You poor thing. I'm also 18+2. Feel for you very acutely. Do you live in London? I can't recommend the fetal medicine centre highly enough. For £100 ish they'll give you the most thorough scan - best available in this country according to every senior ob/gyny I've spoken to (over 2 pregnancies and my mum is in the biz!) - and fantastic advice. They'll more than put your mind at rest or - God forbid there's an issue - if anyone can identify it and help you sort it out its them. Highly recommend it. Best of luck with the rest of the pregnancy xxx

Thanks for all your replies, I'm very grateful and it's great to hear good outcomes.

I actually had my harmony test done at the FMC and they were fantastic so a scan there might be a good idea. My 20 week scan is booked for 24th so not too far away. I'll see how things settle down over the next few days.

I think I felt so out of control at the start of the year with my MMC, our 3 year old has been 'testing his boundaries' a lot and has been full on, I've had a terrible first trimester sickness wise and I think we've been so anxious to get to the 12 week scan this time - things have settled down nicely since then and we are starting to get excited about having another baby and them bam, today has hit me like a brick wall. I'm shattered so that's not helping.

Just posting this and getting your replies has made me feel better so thank you hugely.

Bleed has started again this morning. Did any of you have this? It had completely stopped and gone brown, then just a tiny smear of brown when I last wee'd before bed. now it's back to lots of red?

Epu opens at 8 here so not too long to wait until I can chat to someone

My mum bled like this on and off throughout her pregnancy with me, and I was born healthy with no problems at all. She didn't buy anything in advance because she was so convinced she wouldn't have a healthy baby, so ended up having to buy everything with me in tow.

Hope all goes well at the EPU when it opens. Flowers

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know how you must feel. It didn't happen to me, but my best friend bled continuously and all was fine. I would definitely go to the epu as it's so hard to just sit there and worry. Flowers

Well EPU checked baby's heartbeat, redid speculum exam and cervix is still shut, they took some blood and kept me for monitoring.

The bleed stopped again and blood results came back ok apart from low red blood cell count so they've let come home with instructions to return if the blood starts up again.

This baby is in so much trouble in March!

Glad it all went well. That's a relief. I'm sure as the weeks progress you will begin to feel less anxious. Take care and put your feet up for a few days.
