My best friend is giving me loads of stuff that she bought 5 years ago for her baby and tells me she doesnt want alot for it all. If I list below what she's giving me (apologies if anything spelt incorrectly, its all new to me!), do you have any idea how much money would be appropriate? I really dont want to offend her.

  • Pushchair/cot (unfortunately the car seat that came in the set was damaged), and a square plastic thing that you clip the car seat in to
  • Cosy toes
  • Plastic rain cover and brolly
  • Wooden cot for the nursery (purchased by her mother-in-law)
  • Harness to carry baby close to the body
  • Door hanging bouncy seat
  • Floor bouncy seat
  • Baby bath and toilet training potty's (given to her by a friend)
  • Breast pump/bottle steriliser
  • Baby monitor
  • Few toys/books

There may be a few bits ive forgotten.

Any figures greatly received.

I was given most things and people didn't want any money at all so I bought them vouchers for a nice restaurant in the area.

The one thing that I bought second hand was the nursery furniture set and I paid £180 for cot-bed + chest of drawers + wardrobe - all in pine and in decent condition considering that they had been used for 2 children previously. I did sand and wax them to remove the wee scratches and stains and they now look like new.

If you are not sure about the value of all these items, you can maybe do a search on Gumtree or Preloved and see how much they are going for?

Right I've bought quite a few things second hand off our preloved Facebook group and the prices below are what either I have paid or what I see them going for at the moment -

Pushchairs - depends entirely on the brand anything between £20-70
Cot - £20-30
Footmuff cosy toes - £4
Rain cover £3
Harness depends on brand - I'd avoid hard carriers but up to you Chico Go £2 baby Bjorn £5-10 or free
Door bouncer £2/3
Floor bouncer £5
Baby bath seats - got a few types £2, £3 and free
Steriliser - got the Philips avent for £2, another steam one off eBay for a fiver including post
Audio monitor £5
Toys - 100 toys for about £20
Books - 150 books for £20-30 including a massive chunk for free.

All these came from my local Facebook selling group.

For the pushchair it depends on the make. I paid £225 for a bugaboo cameleon, rain cover, cosy toes, fabric set and clips for car seat - it would have cost me £1100 new). You should never use a second and car seat, always buy new.

I bought a cot £10.50 off ebay - again, you should always have new mattresses for cots and moses baskets/ cribs etc).

For the baby carrier, again it depends on the make, some go for £70 plus second hand!

I picked up a baby bath for £2 and bouncer for £5

Breast pumps are £20 - £40 new, depending on the make and sterilisers you can get for around £12 new, for a steam one with no accessories.

I'd say £100 would be reasonably generous depending on the make of the pram.

Again, it hinges on the make of the pram I think as the expensive brands would go for a min. of £200 second hand. It might be best to be guided by her in terms of what her expectations are. You could offer £100 and also take her out for a lovely dinner somewhere if she's reluctant to name a price. Have you ever done her big financial favours on a par to this? With my sister, she gave me absolutely tons of baby gear for our first due in Feb but she has two children that we've always bought thoughtful and fairly pricey gifts for so it feels fair enough to be helped out so much with the expense of our first baby.

Chattymummyhere · 09/10/2015 16:59

All depends on the makes of the items.

My britax vigour 4 with carry cot and toddler seat cost me £25
Cotbed (without mattress) £15
Baby monitor (angel care with sensor pad) £20
Steriliser (tommee tippee) £5
Floor bouncer Winnie the Pooh £6

Brest pumps manual around £5-£20
Electric £25+
Door bouncers £3-£5
Baby bath £3
Potty free as nobody round here buys them second hand
Bottles again all teats should be new so bottles go for free

Thanks for the guidance. We were thinking around ?120 but now im beginning to think it should be more considering the pram/buggy cost. Im waiting for her response right now on the make of it before i can do some research.

Focusfocus, you've done incredibly well there!

WeePoppy, how did you find the energy to do the DIY on the furniture!?

The meal idea is a good one, she would love that.
