Who to tell about my pregnancy

Hello, I just wanted some advice as I found out just this week that I am pregnant, my husband and I are really pleased. We had agreed not to tell anyone else yet, as I am only just over 4 weeks I think. The only thing is my husband will be working away until Feb and I feel a little uneasy with no one nearby who knows (well apart from the midwife). Am I being silly or should I talk to one of my family just so I have someone for support etc here.

Congratulations! And tell whoever you like - there's no hard and fast rules. Just bear in mind that whoever you tell, you will also have to tell if something sadly goes wrong. Which is why most people keep it to close friends and family only.

There are no laws, it's up to you.

In saying that why would you be uneasy that no one knew? The first trimester isn't fatal

Thank you! I think I maybe would like a member of my family to know, partly in case something does go wrong. Thanks for your help Smile

I guess if anything was worrying me or did go wrong I would want to have someone in my family I could talk to!

Hi Countrylass, my DH wasn't working away but I did want to tell my mum because symptoms got pretty bad and, whilst DH lovely, he obviously hadn't been pregnant himself and it was a real help to talk through symptoms with my mum. Also as you say, it would be useful to have someone to support you in the unlikely event something went wrong.

Congratulations! If you don't want to share with friends etc. until your first scan then tell your mum and possibly your MIL or another close relative - it's nice to have somebody to talk to!

Sighing · 09/10/2015 16:56

If you do feel uneasy do share with a good friend. Or parent. If you want. I'm 20 weeks (today) and waiting for my scan to disclose to most.

I told my sister, as I followed the rule 'share the good news with those you'd share any bad news with'. I already had a mc a few months previously, so was glad to share (what we hoped) was good news this time. I'll also be telling her when I'm off to the hospital and she has dibs on first phone call when baby arrives. It's good to have that one person to share everything with, who you know won't be a pest or a big mouth until you're ready to share further. Congratulations!

Congratulations. I told my mum I was pregnant then others after 12 weeks

TreeSparrow · 09/10/2015 19:21

I told my parents and only closest friends. Basically I told those who I would want if I needed support in any way.

CityDweller · 09/10/2015 19:31

I straight away told those who I would anyway have told if I had a miscarriage. So, for me, that's my mum, sister and closest friends. But, you can tell who you like when you like. There's no 'rule' that you have to wait until the 12-week scan.

Countrylass22 · 09/10/2015 22:50

Thank you for all of your advice, I think you are right about telling the good news only to people you would tell the bad news. Thanks ladies Smile

You can absolutely tell who you like. Just ask yourself, would I lean on these people if it sadly went wrong? If the answer is yes, then tell away!

I've had 3 mcs and the people I've told have been the ones that have supported me through the shitty times that followed

docmcstuffins1 · 10/10/2015 08:30

I told my mum at 5 weeks (for exactly the reasons everyone has mentioned), but made her wait to tell everyone else until I'd had my 1st scan at 8 weeks (due to some bleeding). She was so excited she nearly burst!
