Scan at 6w - nothing to be seen

Hi all,

Just went in for an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy, and although there was a visible sac, there didn't appear to be anything inside. The doctor was very nice but the advice to "Wait until next week and see" isn't particularly comforting. She said she's not pessimistic, that this can be due to it simply being too early, but I'm terribly worried.

EDD has been adjusted to 28 May 2015 so I guess that would make me exactly 6 weeks to the day. I've had no bleeding or anything.

Has anyone had a similar experience? If it's failed to progress, what can I expect to happen next?

I have had a scan at 5 weeks with an empty gestational sac. No yolk sac even. Had to wait 2.5 weeks before they would scan me again. A long wait. At 7.5 weeks saw a heartbeat. In a previous pregnancy ( IVF hence early scan) I saw a heartbeat at 5+3.

So hope you have good news next week.

RooibosTeaAgain · 05/10/2015 12:50

Sorry should have said, did they tell you the size of the sac? Mine was empty at 11mm if that helps. But had two very different early scans and had heartbeats by 7/8 weeks each time.

Afraid no idea about failure to progress as the early mc I have had were when not had scans so not in the medical system.

lepudding · 05/10/2015 12:58

No, she didn't tell me the size and I didn't think to ask. Thanks for the reply though. Everything I'd read seemed to suggest that by 6w you should definitely be seeing something (so many stories of HBs visible by this point) so of course it all seems rather gloom-and-doom to me right now.

May be you're just earlier than u thought? I'm 6 weeks tomorrow. Had scan last Tuesday they could see the sac but nothing in it so they did an internal scan where they saw yolk sac and starting if a baby. No heartbeat as said it was too early so they r scanning me again Thursday.

Junosmum · 05/10/2015 13:07

Was it vaginal or abdominal. My abdominal at 6 weeks showed only a sac but vaginal showed jellybean and heartbeat.

lepudding · 05/10/2015 13:10

Internal. She didn't mention about anything being visible but again, I didn't ask any specific questions and she's just asked me to go back next Tuesday to rescan.

God, this is horrible.

The cycle when I conceived ended up being a long one, which meant when I went in for what I thought was an 8w scan, we saw a little heartbeat and a 5.5-6 week fetal pole. I ended up VERY glad we didn't do a scan a week before, because I'd have been terrified.

My DH didn't even know to be worried, but I spent the next few weeks worrying a bit about miscarriage (I've had two MCs before). Just got our 20 week scan done, he looks great! Don't lose hope!

BeckleinDisguise · 06/10/2015 13:11

I went in for a scan at what should have been 7w due to bleeding and a very small sac was all that was seen. A few days later another scan showed a slightly bigger sac but nothing. I had another scan yesterday (to confirm ectopic) and they found a much bigger sack with a teeny jellybean baby and a fluttering heart. I'm measuring at 6w3d instead of 8w6d so its probable that I just conceived much later than thought and got a BFP incredibly early. Fingers crossed for you

Flowers It's bloody awful isn't it. I am going through a very similar thing. Scan at 7 weeks + and only a sac and v small baby seen, not heart beat and measuring 5 weeks. After an agonising 10 day wait we go back for our follow up scan tomorrow and I have no idea if my little baby has grown or what to expect if it hasn't. Just wanted to hand hold as I know exactly the worry which is now a part of your daily life! Fingers crossed it's all ok for you. Let us know how you get on xxxx

LittleBear01 · 08/10/2015 20:06

This happened to me today as well - I'm 7+6, and as it's an IVF pregnancy I'm totally sure of dates. All that was there were 2 empty sacs, each measuring just 10mm (apparently they should be 16mm by 6 weeks so this is tiny for almost 8 weeks). The sonographer said it's highly unlikely this will end in a successful pregnancy, but I'm to go back in a week for another scan. Currently feeling absolutely heartbroken, so completely empathise with you OP.

BeckleinDisguise · 08/10/2015 22:04

Good luck tomorrow ktkaye I hope you get lovely news tomorrow

So sorry you're feeling so heartbroken littlebear, don't give up hope though! I was certain of my dates too, I wonder if sometimes they take a little longer to get going sometimes? We all grow at different rates once we're born so I don't see why the same wouldn't be true inside the womb.

I'm not feeling so hopeful, I've had heavy bleeding since my scan and painful cramps, trying hard to stay positive though. Early pregnancy can be such a rough ride.

LittleBear01 · 09/10/2015 07:12

Thanks Beckle, I've been clinging on to that hope a little bit, I must admit. Some people have bleeding/cramps all through pregnancy and have completely healthy babies - I hope your little one is ok.

Good luck ktkaye - let us know how you got on.

I had a scan at 6 weeks and they found an empty sac and said it seemed to be collapsing in on itself. Told to come back in a week to confirm a 'blighted ovum' and get the drugs to induce a miscarriage if it hadn't started naturally. Went back the following week and there was a very obvious heartbeat. DD was 2 this week. Don't give up hope and try not to worry too much. Good luck x

Just wanted to say thank you to everybody for the encouraging words, and big hugs to everybody going through the same horribly stressful experience!

I just wanted to update in case this is useful to someone in the future. It did indeed turn out to be the case that the dates were off by a week. At the first scan, I'd have been just shy of 5 weeks so it's normal that only a "black hole" can be seen, apparently. At 6w1d yesterday, the heartbeat was visible.

Best of luck to anyone else worrying about this.
