No appetite - losing weight - 10 weeks pregnant

I'm 10 1/2 weeks pregnant and I've completely lost my appetite. I've lost about half a stone I think. It's not helped by feeling constantly queasy (although not being sick which I'm grateful for) but there's just nothing that I fancy. I'm worried that this will harm the baby. Got my first midwife appt next week but just wondered if anybody else felt the same and is it a problem?

Don't think it will harm the baby as the baby will take what it needs from you so you will suffer first iykwim.
You may need to take vitamins BUT I would speak to your mw before hand to get advice as some vitamins can be dangerous in pregnancy.

I can sympathise feeling sick and being sick as I was the same with dd and this current pregnancy BUT didn't loose weight over it so can't help you there. I wouldn't stress to much atm but make your mw aware (maybe before next weeks appointment) and drinks as much as you can handle. Water, juice etc. Stay clear of caffine and energy drinks.

Hope someone else can give you more advice. HTH x

I lost a stone at the start of all 3 of my pgs and have had two 8 1/2 lb babies, dc3 is predicted to be over 9lbs when it's born in 3 weeks!! I had the same thing as you really, just didn't feel like eating, felt queasy but never threw up. I did panic about it the first time round but the mw reassured me that the foetus gets first priority on everything it needs from you and it won't matter at all.

Look on it as a good thing - by the time I delivered ds and dd I was just under a stone heavier than my pre-pg weight and was back to that by 4 weeks after they were born. I'm hoping the same will happen this time round!!

Hi discodolly

I have been exactly the same from the day I found out I was pg. Am now 14 weeks and over the last week things have started to pick up and every now and then I get absolutley ravenous, especially after a nap.

The baby will take what it needs from you but it's you that will suffer. are you taking you PG vits??

I hope the midwife can suggest something for you. Can you handle a wee cut off of cheese here and there and some fruit & veg pieces. you know just little bits of food.

as long as you are eating enough to remain healthy, you should be fine..i actually lost more weight when pregnant that i put on and 5 days after having dd id lost 3 stone(dd weighed 6lb 11oz)but then i could afford to lose that and more..keep an eye on yourself and if worried speak to midwife

Disco - congratulations! Your post sounds exactly like me 12 months ago! I completely lost my appetite during the first 3 months of my PG - was only actually sick 4 times but felt nauseous constantly and just didn't fancy eating anything - in fact it was that bad that DH ended up eating all the choccies from the 2 advent calendars that we have every year (gonna make up for it this year though! ) . I lost a stone during this time - my appetite gradually came back at about 14 weeks and I went on to produce an 8lb baby so please don't worry about it.

Same with me - lost me appetite completely, could not even prepare any food. Even after the morning sickness finished at around 13 weeks, never quite felt like eating or drinking my favourite things through the rest of my pregnancy. My sister in law lost loads of weight... but like another thread said... the baby with take what it needs. Least you will not end up putting on loads of weight on!! I spoke to one lady the other day and she said she put 6 stone on with her DD!! That is mega.. Some of my friends never stopped eating through their pregnancies and their weight ballooned... Good luck with rest of pregnancy, sure you will feel better in a couple of weeks... x

I am 10 weeks, and have lost 2-3 pounds. My diet beforehand was very bad, mainly made up of sugar, and now I'm pg I have a real aversion to sweet stuff. I told the m/w and she said it will improve once the ms has gone and eat what I fancy now. I'm taking pregnancy vits and mumomega, which I find reassuring, and also Vit B6 for the ms.

My advice - try different types of cereal if you like it and lots of fruity drinks. Nibble at some cheese and oatcakes, and don't feel you have to have a proper meal, snacks will do.

I hope you feel better soon, I do sympathise, and good luck.

REsearch shows that low weight gain or weight loss in the 1st trimester is not dangerous to the baby.
Plenty of us have ahd severe vomiting and myself I lost over a stone in 11 days with hyperemesis in my last pregnancy. But went on to gain 2 stone, baby was good weight etc
I think the baby can take all it needs from your stores and your body gets very efficient at getting what it needs from basic food sources
Im portant to make sure you do not dehydrate though.
I found tinned fruit kept me sane and convent garden soups, toast and the odd square of chocolate.
Plus glass or two of full cream milk every day.
I am 25 wks this time and have not put on any weight yet, I am eating smaller meals, but more often, finding this suits me.
Take a good pre natal vitamin every day. Hopefuly by 13 wks you should perk up a little and feel brighter and more wanting to eat.

BrandyTutter · 01/12/2006 16:31

try not to worry

am actually a little as am 7 weeks and although i feel nauseous, i can still eat for england. but only the unhealthy stuff (toast, more toast, mince pies, cakes, toast)

Mumpbump · 01/12/2006 16:33

I lost about 3/4 of a stone when I was pg with ds and all was fine. Just try to make sure you take some vitamin supplements and try to make yourself eat the stuff you really need (eg. protein and milk), even if you don't fancy it. I'm sure you will start putting on weight in another few weeks.

lulumama · 01/12/2006 18:55

baby will take all it needs from you

eat as and when you feel like and take a pregnancy supplement

i lost 2 stone in the first trimester of each pregnancy , although i am on the curvy side.....produced two lovely healthy babies !

should pass by the second trimester !

Discodolly100 · 03/12/2006 11:18

Thanks everybody for your reassuring comments and advice

Can anybody recommend a good pregnancy vit? supplement? I just assumed they were a marketing swizz and that any vitamins would do, but I now know that some vitamins aren't recommended during pregnancy. Does anybody know which ones these are?

Hi discodolly. I can recommend mumomega (google) which i take as I can't stand the thought of eating oily fish! I also take Pregnacare but would like to bump it up a bit if anyone knows of anything 'stronger' as I am very conscious I am eating badly at the mo.

OonaghBhuna · 03/12/2006 14:14

I take pregnacare during the first trimester and then I just continued with Berocca. I discovered Berocca in Australia, and its effervescent and easy to take one each morning.
