Do I need a new mattress?!

I have a bednest which I used for DD2. Since then I have lent it to a friend who has used it for her two children, and I will be getting it back for feb for arrival of DC3.

I assumed I didn't need a new mattress, is this correct?

SIDS guidelines are a new mattress for EVERY child that uses it.

Blimey, even between siblings? I didn't know that.

We didn't between siblings, but definitely would here.

From the reading I have done I think it depends on whether the mattress has a non-permeable cover or not. If so then risk is reduced (possibly eliminated as the risk comes from bodily fluids seeping into the mattress and then being a breeding ground for nasties I believe). The risk is also reduced between siblings compared to third parties, but is still there.

I am getting a new mattress for my bednest for DD2 even though it's probably not technically needed but I'd rather buy one and eliminate any risk and they aren't too expensive. I decided not to get a new mattress for the cot which DD1 has been in from 7 months to now (2.9) on the basis that it has a non-permeable top, plus it's always had a waterproof mattress cover on it and DD2 will be 6/7 months by the time she goes into it.

Yes. I would get a new mattress especially as it isn't just a sibling who has used it x 2

I've bought a new mattress for my bednest and didn't give my friend the old mattress when she borrowed it - didn't feel safe especially as dd1 was a very pukey baby.
