Hi all
Had a growth scan today as midwife thought baby was measuring 2 weeks ahead of due date. I was told by lady at scan that she is big approx 6lb 10 (I don't know how they tell) and I'm only 34 weeks. My question to you lovely ladies is....can I be asked to be induced if there's a chance my not so little bundle of joy is going to be massive? I'm terrified of tearing and don't really want a c section.
Thank you all for reading Grin

Try not to worry I measured really big through both my previous pregmancies. I'm talking 6-8 weeks big each time. They rescanned me and scared me with potential problems. There were no problems all was fine I just measued big. My boys were 8lbs13 and 8lbs so not that big. Try not to worry.

I measured 7lb 4 at 36 weeks - growth scan as was measuring big. Then went overdue so was induced anyway (for dates not size) and my boy was bown at 42 weeks weighing 11lb 2oz!

However. He was a normal delivery, with a little assistance by Ventouse, and I had a tiny internal graze only. 2 small stitches, no perineal damage etc, and a much quicker recovery than a lot of my friends with smaller babies.

I really dont think size is everything.

Thank you for replying. I understand they can be wrong in their measuring and it doesn't always mean anything but it does scare you a bit. As this is my first I think I may be I'm worrying over nothing.
Smile thank you for the reassurance zippyswife and wildfire!

I have GD and my baby is measuring 2 weeks ahead an 4lbs 2 and I'm only 31 weeks pregnant.

I would be careful about asking to be induced due to there size you will find that at times they are not very accurate. My sister gave birth 5 weeks ago induced at 39 weeks because they told her she was carrying a 8-9lb baby. And my niece was born at 39 weeks weighing 6lb11 and 48 cm long.

It's a tricky one I'm very sceptical of believing how accurate they are at 28 weeks she was two weeks behind and then 29 weeks she was 2 weeks ahead rescanned at 30 weeks to be told she was a week ahead and then on Tuesday there she scanned and they said 2 weeks ahead again so I'm sceptical of believing them I'm just fed up of having to go to clinic every week for scan as they say she's big when they aren't actually accurate

At 34 weeks my growth scan predicted DS would be 10lbs. At 39 weeks when born he was 7.11. I wouldn't worry too much. Growth scans are very inaccurate.

I am 34+4 and measuring big- I had a growth scan at 31 weeks and they estimated baby weighed nearly 5lb. I am measuring 3-4 weeks ahead. I have to have another scan at 37 weeks. The consultant said if the growth accelerates further and baby is expected to be over 5kg they may recommend a c section.
I would hate to be induced as as far as I understand this is a less natural labour and contractions can be irregular and more painful. I am hoping for a home birth which I will try for even if the baby is measuring big. I am just hoping that growth is stable and doesn't increase!

As previous posters have said, growth scans can be v inaccurate so I would take it with a pinch of salt.

madwomanbackintheattic · 30/09/2015 23:58

Completely inaccurate - don't believe a word. I was told up to 10lb13oz and she was 8lb6oz after the CS they told me was necessary. For the subsequent two I nodded and smiled and vbac.

My bump measured big and so did a growth scan. They estimated ds would be over 9lbs at term. He was born a week late weighing 7.6lbs.
I have heard so many similar stories. Try not to worry.

Hello
Just voicing what everyone else has said but try not to be to concerned as others has said you can definitely go ahead and have a normal delivery without tearing etc or needing a c section !

I am also measuring big and it has really stressed me out! I have been dreaming of going into labour early or being induced, but I have also been told many many times that the growth scans are inaccurate! I wish they had never told me that the baby is going to big and I could be blissfully unaware! This is my third so I'm trying to 'pull myself together' and ignor the growth scan predictions. It's hard though, they really do make you doubt yourself! and I have gestational diabetes so I have to go to the diabetes clinic once a fortnight o be poked and prodded by 2 docs and numerous nurses and midwives, I hate it!
