29wks & measuring small

Saw my midwife yesterday arvo and she measured me for the first time. Fundal measurement was only 26cm. She said according to the chart I should be 28cm.

She was not worried as baby was laying 'transverse'?? (across my belly) and is very very active. I am also a size eight played a lot of racket sports and xc running before I found out I was pregnant, so she reckons my core is tight.

I'm not worried as everything else is normal and really good with baby, just a bonus scan :)

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, think it's very common. I had lots of scans for other reasons but it was an interesting lesson in how misleading the fundal measure can be because I always had a recent scan to compare to. Both dcs were consistently 50th centile, so I could always shrug off the measurements.

Your midwife sounds very sensible, and it is lovely to get an extra scan. Don't worry.

Hi, this was the same for me too my scan was two weeks after I had been measured and the baby had grown to the right size over the two weeks.

I felt like it had though, I felt small compared to my other pregnancy and all of s sudden I felt like my bump had come from nowhere.

I have now also been diagnosed with gestestatinal diabeties and have lost weight so I am dreading my next scan which is two weeks away.

I'm measuring 2 weeks ahead and have been wondering about a giant baby, but having read around it seems like the fundal measurement is pretty inaccurate so it's only a rough guide. If you are way off the chart it's a good trigger for further investigation but if your MW if not concerned I wouldn't worry too much about it yourself.

My mum was always measuring ahead with me and my siblings and none of her babies were over 7lbs (and they arrived full term).

I also measured small and was told to expect a six pounder. I had a tiny bump.
8lb 5 she turned out.

Having measured spot on throughout my first pregnancy and then produced a 10lb 5oz baby at the end of it, I am somewhat dubious about the accuracy of fundal height measurements Grin

CarmenMonoxide · 29/09/2015 11:17

Ouch!

notfromstepford · 29/09/2015 12:47

I think they're rubbish too. I was told by midwife that baby was fine, size on track etc, consultant said otherwise.
Midwife said consultant was wrong baby would be at least 6.5 - 7.5 lb (because I measured normal), consultant said 3lb 10 - DS came out at 3lb 12oz, so I don't really have any faith in the fundal height measurement at all!

Katieemilyxo · 29/09/2015 12:50

Don't worry my baby was transverse for ages he didn't budge till about 33 weeks pregnant all my scans he was transverse and I always measured small to and he's now 8 weeks old and healthy don't let them panic you it's normal x

Katieemilyxo · 29/09/2015 12:51

And I measured small and ended up having a 9 pound 3 baby when being told he would be 6-7pound and he's now 16 pound two months on

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 29/09/2015 12:52

I always measured small and had a very healthy 7lb 8oz baby.

Thanks ladies :)

So the fact that they are referring me for a growth scan, will I need to have further growth scans throughout the rest of the pregnancy - even if I am marked as low risk?

I would be glad about getting sent for a scan, much more accurate.

I had a high risk pregnancy and was scanned every fortnight. I always measured small and it turned out that I had IUGR. And a calcified placenta.

I had an ELCS at 36 weeks when DD had stopped growing altogether. She was a tiny 4 pounds, she had slowed right down on growth and was the size of a 32 weeker.

The scans me at that they could whip her out quickly.

Better safe than sorry.

Update - I've had a call from the Consultant's secretary, as he wants to see me before putting through the scan referral... going in at 9am tomorrow!

Further update - Consultant re-measured me and I'm 28.5cm. He felt baby moving and confirmed that it because baby had been in a different position and because my core is so tight lol! all good - no scan required :)
