Greasy hair in pregnancy anyone?

Sorry if this is a bit gross, but has anyone else noticed that their hair gets greasy more quickly now they are pregnant? I used to wash mine every 2 days, but now it's greasy even before 24 hours is up!

Do you think this will last for the rest of the pregnancy, or will it get better as hormone levels change? I'm currently 8 weeks. I'd be grateful to hear about your experiences. I've tried using less (or no) conditioner, changing brands, but neither of these has helped the problem :-(

My last pregnancy, which lasted all of 10 weeks, My hair went from greasy to super dry every other week.

This time around, i seem to be stuck on dry as a broom. So maybe its different for everyone?

I always get it in the very early stages - mine doesn't last so hopefully yours won't either! I found that a paraben-free shampoo and conditioner did the trick, Sainsbury's do a fairly cheap one called Happy Hair Days which I've been using.

Ladypug · 25/09/2015 20:12

My first symptom was this (although I didn't know that at the time) - my hairdresser gave me a specialist shampoo for it - didn't touch it (as I didn't know I was pregnant).

It's not been good for the entire pregnancy, goes lank fairly quickly and I'm now 36 weeks but the first 12 was the worst. I will be glad when my normal hair comes back though!!

Lunastarfish · 25/09/2015 20:18

Sorry it lasted my entire pregnancy, then I got acne...

I'm the opposite and it's brilliant! Used to wash it daily, now I'm a dirty cow and its every 2-3 days. Just as well as at 39+3 I can't bend over the bath to do it anymore. Have to make it my first job in the bath now, which I don't like doing!

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 25/09/2015 20:30

Yeah, sorry I'm also totally opposite. My hair has never been so thick and shiny, it's one thing I'm really going to miss about being pregnant. Don't old wives tales suggest greasier hair (and more spots) mean you're having a girl?

KP86 · 25/09/2015 20:34

My hair and skin went super greasy in the third trimester, I had to stop wearing any make up at 32 weeks and by the end I would wash my hair in the morning and by lunch it was a greasy mop.

My hair has always needed washing every day but during pregnancy it was so bad.

Bunnykins15 · 25/09/2015 20:58

Thanks guys, sounds as though I might be stuck with the greasy mop for a while then :-(

I will look out for the paraben free stuff, thanks for the tip

MrsGently - I hadn't heard that tale about greasy hair suggesting a girl - I'll remember that one and see if it's true!

I don't know the sex of ours so couldn't tell you!

MaisieDotes · 25/09/2015 21:10

I can't remember what my hair was like with my first baby, who was a girl, but with this pregnancy and my last one (both boys) it hasn't been greasy at all. It's noticeably dry and barely needs washing every few days!

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 25/09/2015 21:20

Bunnykins15 - I'm having a boy, so would be interesting to know if it's true. I think boys naturally make you hairier though - my belly looks like it's grown a beard! So obviously, old wives tales say the opposite of girls. Also said that girls make you 'sicker' and 'takes the mother's beauty' - very nice HmmGrin.

During my first pregnancy my hair started smelling! I would get in the shower and the smell from the hot water on my hair made me gag. My hair would reek until it was 100% dry.

Very odd, only lasted a few months though.

Hi OP, this happened with Dc1 and has happened again in cure t pregnancy. My saviour was Nutrogena greasy hair shampoo, as before using it my hair was so greasy it was Getting matted together Confused. My DH also combed in some fairy liquid. Since using the greasy hair shampoo, I've not had the same problem xx
