Took diclofenac before I found out I am pregnant

You are probably going to tell me that one little tablet makes no difference. PLEASE tell me one little tablet makes no difference.

I had a boob lump biopsy around the time the baby would have implanted and I took one tablet of Voveran SR (containing Diclofenac) before I remembered that I might be pregnant. Now I am 4.5 weeks pregnant and beginning to obsess ... I had an mmc in April (no meds involved that time) ... so every little twinge this time around is scaring me doubly so. Help please Sad

www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/Diclofenac/

Seems that there is more of an issue with it after 30 weeks

Tarzanlovesgaby · 25/09/2015 16:48

it will be fine :)

diclofenac is one of the 'shouldn't take if not necessary but probably doesn't do harm' medicines.

You will be so surprised what your body will withhold when making your little one.

When i was pregnant with DD1 I had to have emergency surgery. I was under general and had morphine for two days after the operation.

My DD is now two and so full of toddler mayhem I forget what I went through.

With this pregnancy I went to a spa and also had some anti inflamatory tablets. I am now in my second trimester and baby is growing well!!

I know it is difficult not to worry, but my rationing is. People take a lot worse when they dont know they are pregnant. All you can do is take care of yourself now and enjoy being pregnant :)

sepa · 25/09/2015 19:48

I probably took about 50 before I found out I was pregnant (I suffer with arthritis not a pain killer addiction) I really don't think you have anything to worry about!

nehagarg · 25/09/2015 19:51

Thank you girls. That makes me feel a hell of a lot better. Smile

Cant wait to see the bean for the first time in 3 weeks. Good luck and easy labour to us all. Grin

There are only risks when taking diclofenac in the final trimester of pregnancy. It's related to valves in their heart closing after birth i think. Also - even if a drug direction says 'don't take while pregnant', it doesn't automatically mean you have harmed your baby. It's just very difficult to research the effects of drugs in pregnancy since you can't exactly ask a bunch of pregnant women to take the drug and see what happens and whether their babies are OK.

Thanks Vim - you are absolutely right and everyone on this thread has made me feel so much better. I knew I was being an idiot. I just needed confirmation. Grin

Not about taking it during pregnancy, but I took one of these tablets for ongoing foot pain after I'd run a marathon. Went to my doctor to get some of these 'magic pills' and my doctor said that they're close to coming off the market due to the potential side effects.

Swannykazoo · 26/09/2015 17:30

Yep - fine until 3rd trimester as Vim says

mudandmayhem01 · 26/09/2015 17:33

I had quite a bad fall climbing( didn't know I was pregnant) took diclofenic and ibuprofen . I wouldn't have chosen to take strong painkillers or or extreme sports if I had known but looking at healthy sporty dd I got away with it!

ImperialBlether · 26/09/2015 17:36

My doctor won't prescribe these any more Sad They are miracle drugs, imo.

nehagarg · 26/09/2015 21:51

Thanks everyone. I am so much more relieved. Love Mumsnet

I was vaccinated for polio and other tropical diseases that I can't believe I can't remember now. Fully expected to give birth to babies with no eyes. I didn't, they were fine.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/09/2015 22:08

I was prescribed diclofenic for severe SPD when I was pregnant 19 years ago. DS2 is fine.

Congratulations Flowers

SignoraStronza · 26/09/2015 22:19

I was given it regularly after c-section - I imagine that if it's fine during breastfeeding then it should be ok when pg. Incidentally my gp friend suggested I occasionally took paracetamol and codeine for severe back pain during pg. I'm sure codeine is in the same (opiate?) class of drugs.

Skiptonlass · 26/09/2015 22:25

Codeine is an opiate - diclofenac is in the NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory) class.

sepa · 27/09/2015 07:46

I can take codeine up until 3rd trimester

MrsPCR · 27/09/2015 13:56

I thought the 'problem' with anti-inflammatories was just that they can upset your stomach and in extreme cases cause bleeding in your stomach, which is obviously more serious if you're pregnant therefore one tablet and no bleed will not have harmed the baby. You will be fine.

wonkylegs · 28/09/2015 07:37

In my 1st pregnancy I took them up to the third trimester (I have arthritis). The reason you can't take them in the 3rd trimester is to do with the later development of a small part of the baby's heart that can be disrupted at this stage before that it's ok to take them, although as with many drugs recommended to avoid if you can.
1 tablet at early stages will be absolutely fine.
I had a miscarraige last dec and am now 8weeks at every single thing worries me. I burst into tears last night because I didn't feel sick, so I know what you are going through. It's going to be tough I think until I get some reassurances this baby's going to be ok.
