How will they date this pregnancy?

Hi all,

I'm currently pregnant again right after my miscarriage at 10+ weeks! I have no idea when I ovulated and I'm usually fab at telling, but since the MC my mind certainly wasn't on TTC.

My GP surgery have you see their midwife at 5 weeks, and I'll be seeing her Thursday (which I thought was quite early), will she offer me a dating scan?

How do they know when to give a dating scan, because they most likely won't see anything at 5 weeks unless it's an internal scan. I miscarried on the 20th August if that helps.

Thank you, this pregnancy is a blessing but I'm scared about dates x

They'll ask your history, make a prediction of when you possibly ovulated and then send you for a scan to get a better idea. Even at 5 weeks, they can use information from the scan to potentially date the pregnancy and then call you back to confirm viability/progression.

Have you got any other info that might help? Did you have a negative pregnancy test or hcg reading post miscarriage and when? When did you have a positive test and confirmation of a new pregnancy? This might help with identifying implantation.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. It's a very strange time for you. I'm so sorry for your loss in August and wish you all the very best for a healthy pregnancy now.

I had a negative test when I started bleeding (very odd).

I got a positive Cleablue of 1-2 weeks about 12 days ago now.

Your 12 week scan IS a dating scan. They may bring it forward a bit so as not to miss the window if you opt for the screening tests and if it is too early (e.g. you end up being 7 weeks when they think you're 11) they'll give you a second one at around 12 weeks for the screening tests.

Congratulations and sorry for your loss.

Do you have any idea when you may have ovulated (how frequently have you DTD etc?)

Lickalolly · 22/09/2015 13:20

But how will they know when I'm roughly 12 weeks for a dating scan it they've no clue how far gone I am?

To be honest, everything is so much of a haze because the miscarriage really threw me off mentally and I quote simply don't remember much about DTD etc Sad

Thank you all for the congratulations!

What happened with your previous pregnancy? Was the bleeding the first indication of miscarriage? Did you have a scan at the time to confirm miscarriage?

Lickalolly · 22/09/2015 13:21

I had a scan to confirm my miscarriage because I was in immense pain and I was bleeding.

Clear blue I believe is usually 2 weeks behind so I would say you were 3-4 weeks based on that.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Wishing you a very health pregnancy

Hi Lick. I had a miscarriage at about 6 weeks and conceived this current pregnancy (30 weeks) right after with no period in between. I must have gone pretty much straight back into a normal cycle with my dates, and your dates are quite similar if you started to miscarry on 20 September. So your dates can only be a week out really I think.

At 5 weeks I'm guessing it will be an internal scan and they may get you in a couple of weeks to see the progression. They may revise dating at later scans but with only a week's discrepancy that's nothing to worry about.

Lickalolly · 22/09/2015 13:25

Thank you GirlSailor, really helpful. Is it possible they won't see anything at 5 weeks with an internal scan?

And did the scan show a complete miscarriage? And your positive pregnancy test was around the 10th of this month?

Your dates suggest that if this is a new pregnancy, you conceived very quickly after miscarriage (around a week later) or thereabouts though there is margin for error within all that. I think given your dates and how quickly you've tested positive, they'll send you for a scan quite quickly to assess whether this is a new, viable pregnancy and if so, how far along you are. If the scan is not conclusive, they'll schedule a repeat scan. That is what I would expect to happen certainly.

I'm sorry for your loss and congratulations. I also miscarried in July and got pregnant straight away. When my gp I asked I said I had no idea how far along I was so he used the date of my mc as an estimate. I went for a scan yesterday as I had some spotting and according to the scan I'm 8 weeks something...my mc was over 9 weeks ago. The sonographer said the dates may vary slightly when I have my dating scan. Hope that helps.

ShowOfHands · 22/09/2015 13:28

At 5 weeks it's likely you wouldn't see the baby but there will be other indications of a viable pregnancy (location of sac, endometrial thickness, fetal pole etc).

Icklepickle101 · 22/09/2015 13:32

I had a scan at 5+ 6 and they could date as there was a heartbeat. They are used to very early scans so are more accurate than you would think!

whatsoever · 22/09/2015 14:09

My friend had no idea of her dates (wildly irregular periods), they sent her for a scan straight away at what turned out to be 8 weeks and then she got a bonus! normal dating scan at 12 weeks.

I think it will depend on the policy in your area. Congrats on the pregnancy!

Trinpy · 22/09/2015 14:19

I conceived immediately after a mc and they used the first day of bleeding as day 1 of my new pregnancy (which I found quite upsetting at the time as the date was on all my notes so it was a constant reminder). They then sent me for a normal dating scan 12 weeks after the mc. It turned out I was only 10 weeks so I just had to go back for a second scan 2 weeks later.

Good luck with your pregnancy. I know how scary it is straight after a mc Flowers.

TriJo · 22/09/2015 14:38

I was very unsure of my dates and chose to pay for a private early scan. Glad I did because it put me at around the absolute latest gestation I suspected I could have been and I had to reschedule my 12 week scan to make sure they could do the screening tests.

CarrotVan · 22/09/2015 14:52

They will use the date you started bleeding as a placeholder for last menstrual period and might send you for a scan 7-8 weeks after that date to get a clearer idea so they can make sure your 12 week scan falls in the right window for the combined tests

I conceived in the wtf cycle this time round and they did early reassurance scans at 6 and 9 weeks at the EPU. You might find that you can get an early scan fairly easily

gillybeandramaqueen · 22/09/2015 16:28

Hiya... same thing happened to me... I am 39 weeks pregnant! They take the date from the first day of your miscarriage... and then when they do your very first scan, they will be able to tell you more precisely how far on you are from the measurements they take which will then give you your due date... xx

Lickalolly · 22/09/2015 16:48

Thank you ladies for all your lovelies replies, it's very reassuring Flowers
