Don't know what to expect - miscarriage

Hi Ladies

On Monday this week at 7+2 I woke up to some bleeding, cramps (no worse than average AF) and a complete lack of previous symptoms - sore boobs & lost appetite were gone.

No change on Tuesday so we called Maternity & they sent us to A&E who got me in for an internal scan right away. They thought the pregnancy was showing about 5 weeks, so asked if I was sure my dates were right, and booked me back in for next Friday to confirm what I think I already know; that the pregnancy stopped developing at 5 weeks.

The bleeding has continued since Monday; never really heavy, but always consistently there and has moved from brown to red and back again a few times. I've passed one quite large clot, and a lot of small clotty/tissy bits (sorry if TMI). The cramps stopped on Thursday.

I don't know what to expect now. If anyone has had a similar experience and doesn't mind talking about it would you let me know what happened next in your case? Should I expect further pain/heavier bleeding? If I need d&c when is this usually done?

We're supposed to be going away for a few days on the 30th and I'm so much looking forward to a few days away with DH to recuperate and just be somewhere different. Really hoping that we don't have to cancel.

Thanks
x

october I remember your other post and I'm so sorry to read that things aren't going well.
I had a very similar experience last year. I was 8 weeks pregnant and noticed some blood one morning, so went to my local Early Prdgnancy Unit where I was gown an internal scan. At that time there was a heartbeat but I was measuring only around 6 weeks and my cervix had begun to open.
Sadly over the next 48 hours the bleeding increased, and when I was rescanned a week later, it was confirmed the pregnancy was over and my womb was empty.
I didn't have much blood, really just the same as a period, and I didn't need a D&C. My cycle returned to normal immediately and I got my period 4 weeks later.
Sadly I've suffered from recurrent miscarriage (this is very rare - only around 1% of women have this misfortune - miscarriage is very much usually a one off experience so I don't want to put any seeds ifcwurey in your head) and with my other two miscarriages I needed intervention as my body wouldn't let go of the pregnancy. I had medical management for one, and a D&C for the third. But in my experience, if your body has miscarried naturally and you were measuring 5 weeks instead of over 7, then you may not need any further medical intervention.
One practical thing to note is that you can't use tampons during a miscarriage as your cervix is open and more easily susceptible to infection, so if you are still bleeding be aware of this.
I hope you manage to get away still. I remember going to a friend's wedding a few days after my first loss and although I was a bit of an emotional wreck, I really think the change of scene and pace helped.
I'm so sorry you're going through this, it really is one of life's most heartbreaking experiences.
Please feel free to PM me if I can be if any help or support.
Huge unmumsnetty hugs. X

Hello, so sorry you're going through this.

I experienced the same this time last year, at around 7 weeks. Light spotting for a few days, followed by heavy-ish bleeding (including some clots), for about a week. Never needed to go to the hospital though except to rule out an ectopic. It was managed naturally and once the cramping ceased the bleeding tailed off too, so it sounds to me like you are hopefully through the worst of it.
When is your trip away? Are you flying? I cancelled a weekend abroad to stay at home and ride out the miscarriage - as advised by my doctor. I wouldn't have wanted to travel feeling that miserable.
Just keep stocked up with plenty of pads and big knickers. I spent most of that weekend in the bath.
Hope you feel ok soon. For what it's worth my periods came back about 5 weeks later, the first was quite heavy, but normal after that.

Thanks Ladies. I think I had scared myself with Dr Google (I know, I shouldn't) and lots of stories of Women having horrendous pain, needing morphine/tramadol and feeling like they were in labour before passing the sac & contents.

Mentally I'm feeling ok; I don't think the fact I was expecting had completely sunk in to start with - it was something of a surprise - so I know this sounds weird but it's almost as if I was expecting this to happen. It's been easy to accept, although of course disappointing.

I'm just impatient to get back to normal physically and start again. I'm looking at the positive - DH & I were not convinced we were ready beforehand, and now we definitely are.

The trip is 3 nights in Barcelona so just a 2 hour flight. If I feel better or the same as I do now, I think I'll go - assuming the Dr says its ok. Aside from the bleeding & a vague feeling of vulnerability (I don't really want to see/talk to anyone except DH) I feel ok.

Hi October

Firstly sorry for your loss Flowers

Secondly, I have had similar this week, I was 5/6 weeks when I began spotting this week. I bleed heavily yesterday and lost a large-ish clot. I've had cramping and back ache, but it seems to be easing off.

If you've lost a large clot too and smaller clots since, and have been bleeding on and off for several days then it's likely the pregnancy will have passed. Pain varies for every woman and is dependant on how far pregnant you are.

If you want peace of mind, please speak to your GP this week, both to check things have progressed as expected and for reassurance.

Most of all I hope you have a lovely time away in Barcelona.
