Heartburn and indigestion while pg - what's best?

I've been prescribed Gaviscon, but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Actually tbh I find myself drinking the stuff rather than taking the recommended one or two spoons four times a day. Still it gives only momentary relief!

Should I ask if I can switch to Rennies or is something else better? Or is it just one of those and bear it situations?

Also, are there any foods that you should deffo avoid while pg if you want to get rid of the heartburn?

I used to eat Tums and another fruity indegestion rememdy that I can't remember the name of while I was pregnant - couldn't cope with gaviscon.

Be careful with Rennies as they can constipate if you have too many! They aren't that strong, but do help.

I think Gaviscon is meant to be the best, although that seemed to come back up and burn me me the other day.

Funniest thing I've found that helps, which is isn't good for you, but Pepsi works for me!

Avoid fruit juices and fizzy drinks as they are big culprits in heartburn.

Do you have long to go? I'm nearly there now, but this burning thing has been happening since week 28 / 29.

I couldn't bear the liquid gaviscon or any chewy tablets (bleurgh!) ended up forking out the swallowable gaviscon tablets...I even had heartburn while I was in labour.

PrettyCandles · 29/11/2006 15:34

Rennies are fine. I lived on them druing 1st and 3rd trimesters with all 3 of my babies. Foun d that the peppermint flavour ones were much more effective for me than the spearmint flavour.

Thanks for the advice, this gaviscon just doesn't seem to be working!! Maybe they make it so that it makes your indigestion worse in the long run so you just have to buy more!!

Mumatuks I'm only 23 weeks so goodness knows what I'll be like when I'm further along. If the tales are true, I'm in for a very hairy baby !

I always had a glass of milk on the go. I had terrible heartburn all the way through, you have my sympathy! Avoid anything obviously acidic, like orange juice. (Oh and ds had lots of dark hair when he was born )

cinnamongreyhound · 29/11/2006 15:52

I find that drinking milk helps to calm it down a bit. Haven't taken anything yet for fear of slowing down bowels even more!

There are definately foods that make it worse but I guess it's different for different people, maybe try to find your triggers and avoid them. Eating little amounts at a time helps me too.

I thought hiccups was the wives tale for having a hairy baby?? Had lots of those too!

theres a new herbal thing called fruitin you can get in health food shops. Obviously have to pay for it though instead of on free prescription like gaviscon.
