When to start buying bits?

Hello! I'm 6+2 weeks, and beginning to be less stunned & more excited!

I know of course it's very early days, but when did other ladies start buying bits & pieces?

I'm a closet shopaholic and can't wait to start browsing but don't want to peak too soon & get carried away, or feel like I've jinxed anything.

(I did buy 2 mat dresses from ASOS at the weekend, but they were in the sale and I didn't want to miss out as I loved them, so that doesn't count, right? Wink).

I'm 14+5 and haven't bought a single thing yet! I'd so disorganised I'll probably be saying the same when I'm 30 weeks +!

Silverglitter · 08/09/2015 17:01

I totally know what you mean, I am 7 weeks and itching to get shopping I don't even care what I just want to buy things.
I think a lot of people wait until their 20 week scan is complete but I think if I last until my 12 week I will be proud of myself.Blush

CalypsoLilt · 08/09/2015 17:02

I bought some baby clothes when I found out I was pregnant but other than that I've just been bargain hunting on gumtree and ebay....I'm 17 weeks and haven't bought anything bigger than the moses basket (??20 gumtree, mamas and papas NWT). I've found the amazon wish list satisfies all of my shopping urges and I get to do lots of research about everything I need/want. No harm in writing lists! ;)

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 08/09/2015 17:07

Get your 12 week scan under your belt and then I think you could probably get some bits. I would wait until further along to start making larger purchased like prams.

OctoberCupcake · 08/09/2015 17:12

Oooooh the Amazon wishlist!! Great idea, I used that a lot when I was Wedding planning. I might start pinteresting things too, also an old wedding habit.

We're going to Barcelona for a weekend within the next month, and the baby shops in Spain are amazing. I might not be able to resist a little sleepsuit!

So far the baby has one possession; ages & ages ago I was buying some presents for friends' kids in a sale at ELC and there was a 'suitable from birth' soft colourful cat holding a rattle. I liked it too much to give away in the end & it's lived hidden in a drawer in our flat ever since Blush.

I'm 10 wks and have bought 2 sleepsuits, some scratch mitts and a pair of booties Blush really trying to restrain myself at least until my 12 week scan but it's just so tempting!!

WaitingForEgg · 08/09/2015 17:26

I started buying after 12 week scan then some bigger purchases after 20 weeks. I'm 26 weeks now and we have bought about 70-80% of what we need. I think i'm probably a little over organised but babies do come early so was hoping to finish most shopping by around 32-34 weeks

poocatcherchampion · 08/09/2015 17:31

Ive been wondering when I should get everything out of the loft and have an audit but I am no use as I am at the other end of the scale - 30weeks. It still feels v early but it is a good distraction from work :)

I think you probably need to have bought stuff at about 35 weeks just in case.

I think i was about 25 weeks for my first pregnancy.

tessiegirl · 08/09/2015 17:51

I'm 26 weeks and have only bought some sleepsuits after we found out baby's gender...I have researched into things though and know some of the bits that I would like to get. Would like a trip to Mothercare and places soon to see things in real life before we start buying...

Brummiegirl15 · 08/09/2015 19:06

I'm 19 weeks and bought nothing. Too scared to and can't bring myself to until post 20 weeks scan

Skiptonlass · 08/09/2015 19:17

We bought a few things post 12 week screening and the rest post 20 weeks.

Glad I did as am now housebound!

CarShare · 08/09/2015 19:54

I'm 18 weeks and have bought 5 sleepsuits in the Jojo sale after 12 week scan. I have started a list of things I think I'll need and will hit up an NCT nearly new sale in mid Nov to get the essentials (hopefully!). I'm more interested in mat gear at the moment as I have a very visible bump to dress but won't have a baby for another five or so.

TreeSparrow · 08/09/2015 20:27

Bought maternity wear as and when I needed it (now 26wks). Bought cot and built it at 23wks as I wanted that awkward thing done and in place. Have a few sheets and blankets too but nothing else yet.

Pram shopping is next on the list.

Junosmum · 08/09/2015 20:51

I bought some mat clothes at 9 weeks after an early scan, they were only off eBay and I needed them to feel comfortable.

We bought a pram/ buggy thing second hand at 16 weeks because it was a fantastic offer. I then started shopping around about 2 weeks ago for other stuff (about 19/ 20 weeks) keeping an eye out for good deals and have picked up a few things but leaving the expensive stuff until 30weeks, just in case.

WhatTheJeffHasGoneOnHere · 08/09/2015 21:19

I didn't buy anything until after the 20 week scan.

Runningupthathill82 · 08/09/2015 22:29

Nothing til after the 20 week scan, both times. Seems like tempting fate.

newbian · 09/09/2015 04:54

I didn't buy anything until after 20 weeks for myself or baby. Pregnancy lasts a very long time and there's plenty of time to shop. As a FTM I've also learned that what I thought we needed at 20 weeks is different than what we're fairly sure we need now at 32 weeks. I might even return some stuff. So I wouldn't rush.

KurlyWurly88 · 09/09/2015 06:21

I didn't buy anything until after 27-28 weeks! I'm glad really - I ended up not really needing maternity wear, I shape didn't change as much as I thought - saved loads ?????? (was tempted by sales in 1st 12 weeks too).
Also gots loads of presents and hand me downs for baby before I bought anything myself so I really only spent on what we 'needed'.
I'm 38 weeks now and just about finished getting everything!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 09/09/2015 06:26

I bought my travel system before I even got pregnant. I'm now 24 weeks and just have 2 things left to buy

mrsnec · 09/09/2015 07:03

Last time I bought new bras at 10 wks and maternity clothes at 14.

I was nervous about buying stuff because of previous mc. I did hospital bag stuff after that because I figured I'd need that whatever and then got everything else after that. Didn't get the cot though until dd was a week old.

Having said all that, this time every time I go to order something I like it's sold out in my size and last time the cot I wanted had sold out and they couldn't order another one so if you are specific about what you want it does pay sometimes to buy stuff when you see it and I wouldn't normally say that I'm just fed up of things I like being sold out.

cth1982 · 09/09/2015 10:58

I'm 24 weeks and so far all I have bought is baby clothes and a reusable nappy set as it had a massive discount off of it!

We are putting an order in for a cot and dresser this week as where we are buying it from has 10% off and we are going window shopping for the rest of the items we have looked at online in October and will order for Novemberish time.

Didn't start buying anything until about 20 weeks though - still worried I am tempting fate a bit BUT the baby will need things when it gets here so need to get over that now!

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 09/09/2015 11:08

I'm 30 weeks Friday and bought a snow suit about 2 weeks ago. Got the crib last week and bought all the baby grows and vests Monday. Got the pram from DS1,but my friend gave me a sling that I'm gonna use instead. Got the car seat and breast pump from before. Not gonna buy bottles (if I really have any problems, which I'm hoping I won't, asda will be open)

Just nappies to get really

Murloc · 09/09/2015 11:12

I'm 18 weeks and I've bought maternity jeans, as I can't do my normal ones up. Maybe I'll feel more secure after the 20 week scan. Even though this is DC2, it still feels very new and uncertain at this stage.

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 13:02

Thanks Ladies! I don't live in mainland UK so shopping is always a bit of an issue; we have a small Mothercare and a small section in Boots and that is IT, babywise. Maternity wise we have a teeny section in New Look, otherwise nothing.

I worked out my dates and I'll be 19 weeks when we go to the UK to see my family so if I need anything for me at that stage I can have a look there, and I'll have had my 20 week scan by Christmas, just in time for the sales :D :D

(still might have a little peek in some shops in Barcelona though - were we live is so small that I daren't even window shop for fear of bumping into someone I know. Would be difficult to explain why I was in Mothercare...).

I hadn't really thought about gifts or hand me downs either. I have 3 close friends all with little ones that will be almost 1 when ours arrives, so there's scope for borrowing bits from them, for baby and for me!
