ok, am 6 weeks pg

on saturday i had a private scan - all good - saw a foetus and heartbeat

had an nhs scan in the diary for today - had orig planned to cancel it as i'd had the private one

but had a small bleed on sunday so decided to keep today's scan for reassurance

well after waiting for bloody ages i was finlly scanned and the sonographer said "sorry i can't see a foetus - there's a yolk sac but nothing inside it"

wtf?? is it possible for the foetus to have disappeared???

am hoping to get back to harley street tonight to see them again

really freaked out

Bloody hell Tutter...what a relief!

rainbowgirl · 28/11/2006 18:45

Tutter just read this whole thread. the disparity between the NHS and private (is it the Fetal Med Centre you went to?) is quite astounding. not only the difference in experience/skill of the sonographers, but the difference in sensitivity!

i won't go into detail with my story but i had to literally beg the NHS to repeat a scan at 9 weeks so i could make sure the baby was ok. and at my recent 20 week scan i had the same eye-rolling, sighing treatment when i was asking questions about the baby, the placenta etc..

it makes me so sad, because i can afford some private medicine but definitely not to have the baby in a private hospital, most people have no access to private scans at all, you're right - if you hadn't had any money, you'd have been absolutely gutted and had to spend 10 more days like that. it makes me so .

glad you are ok anyway!

xx

tutter so pleased to hear this after all that worry!

incy · 28/11/2006 18:48

That is brilliant news Tutter - thought the NHS scanners would be the problem !

ShouldKnowByFriday · 28/11/2006 18:50

That's ridiculous that the nhs scanner can be sooo wrong. Glad they got it wrong and all is well. Good luck and congratulations.

lemonaid · 28/11/2006 19:29

Huzzah!

foundintranslationnothere · 28/11/2006 19:34

Tutter so glad.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 28/11/2006 19:35

Oh Tutter that is fab news its such a worrying time, isnt it?

I think scanners are skilled to varying degrees - certainly some seem to pick things up better than others. i wouldnt like to pinpoint it as an "nhs" thing. They are so woefully under resourced with such ancient equipment.

The sonographers attitude sucked big time ehre though.

Overrunnerbean · 28/11/2006 19:37

Tutter, I am so pleased by the outcome, what a stressful afternoon you must have had.
As you say, you could have gone and got bladdered to drown your sorrows or anything.

3andnomore · 28/11/2006 19:47

sahmtotwo...sorry, missed that...I had not read the whole thread when I replied to it, and Tutter had not mentioned it in her op, iykwim!
Tutter, wonderful news I am so glad...it is so upsetting when this happens....I had this a few years back, with es, I also had just gone through a m/c a few month previous, saw my Ob/Gyn (was in germany still ,back then) and all was dandy, a couple of weeks later I had some bleeding, and went back, but he was on Holiday and I saw his stand in....well..she couldn't see anything (nothing left apparently) and told me that I must have miscarried again, but to come back in a few days, to see my proper obgyn, blablabla....I was so upset, dh was away, and my mum actually travelled down so I wasn't on my own, and we got mightily drunk and all that....well, saw my Obgyn a few days later, he scanned me again and all was perfectly fine....I was in absolute shock and was then blubbing because of all the wine I had inflicted on the poor mite, that is my 10 year old ds now! He was lovely and apologised profusely and reassured me that the alcohol will not have harmed the Embryo, etc....! Sorry am rambling! Just glad all is well and congratulations on your pg

Donbean · 28/11/2006 19:55

I had the opposite to this, had bleed, went for internal scan......saw "heart beat", went a week later after more bleeding actually it wasnt a heart beat, it was one of my own blood vessels pulsating. was on cloud 9 for that week.

hoxtonchick · 28/11/2006 20:08

delighted for you tutter.

and sorry to hear your bad news donbean.

gothicmama · 28/11/2006 20:17

Tutter so glad it's ok

lulumama · 28/11/2006 20:18

sorry to hear that donbean ...x

AitchTwoOh · 28/11/2006 20:24

tutter, how thrilling... and how bloody infuriating that you've been hurt like this. my history means i need to go for early scans too, i know how much it means to hear that the baby is in the right place and has a heartbeat. it's outrageous that you were left to your own devices... the disparity between pricate and nhs scans is quite a lesson... horrifying. am delighted for you.

AitchTwoOh · 28/11/2006 20:25

commiserations, donbean, what an awful thing to happen...

spudballoo · 28/11/2006 21:49

Goodness me, what a shocking thing to happen to you, so pleased it has all turned out well.

I assume you must have seen Dr Gibb? In which case that is a funny coincidence because I was there today at 5pm too, the waiting room seemed very busy. Were you on your own, wearing a cream coloured top by chance?

Dr Gibb is my consultant and is very helpful.

x

Tutter · 29/11/2006 07:55

i've been spotted in RL!

yes, i was wearing a cream funnel necked cardi thing

exceedingly unglamorous looking after having scrubbed my face after a sobfest earlier

were you also on your own (short dark hair) or with your OH (blonde)?

hope your appt went well

isn't dr gibb lovely? unfortunately we're moving out of london next week, otherwise i'd be tempted to go to him for all antenatal care and birth. i will go back for the 12 week scan and tests though

MrsJohnCusack · 29/11/2006 08:03

which EPU did you go too? I couldn't believe that at West Mid when I went just before 7 weeks this time they could see everything with an external scan - no dildocam (as my sister charmingly calls it) - which means their equipment must be a hell of a lot better than 2 years ago when I last had one. Whereas I think at other local hospitals it's still condom on a probe time - nice

anyhow, just being nosy! glad all is well

Tutter · 29/11/2006 08:16

hi mrsjc - i went to kingston

really wish i'd gone to the west mid - for the easier parking at the very least!

ps donbean - sorry to hear that

Great news Tutter, really pleased for you.

Juicylucythe2nd · 29/11/2006 09:31

Great news Tutter.

Shameful the way the NHS handled you.

Hope you have a fabulously boring pg from now on.

MrsJohnCusack · 29/11/2006 10:05

ah I did wonder
cos have heard not so good things about Kingston, have to say West Mid were fab
really glad you didn't have to rely on them!

AitchTwoOh · 29/11/2006 10:54

mrsjohncusack... i think you'll find the echnical term is fannycam.

AitchTwoOh · 29/11/2006 10:54
