In the gaping hole left by caffeine... what are you drinking?

I love a cuppa. Actually, the problem is that I love several cuppas. Cutting down is tantamount to a lifestyle change. Having had my measly permitted daily tea, I'm left wondering... what to drink?

I haven't found a decaf tea that doesn't just annoy me. I do like herbal teas, but I've also read it's not a great idea to have lots of one particular flavour - you should vary.

So I'm interested to know: what's your hot beverage of choice when preggers?

I love my teas and currently having pg tips decaffee tea and feels normal now

VulcanWoman · 27/08/2015 16:06

Hot chocolate, cocoa, unrefined sugar into a paste with a little milk, then add rest of milk, heat up. I prefer this as no additives, also I use Oatley oat milk at the minute.

mabythesea · 27/08/2015 16:10

You can still have 3 cups of tea a day though. I just kept to 2-3 cups of tea and decaf coffee.

Diggum · 27/08/2015 16:10

Currently suffering with evening sickness alleviated only by salty goods so it's Bovril for me [ashamed].

Hopefully it's not worse than caffeine but I do wonder Blush

Laquila · 27/08/2015 16:10

It took me to about the three month mark to even countenance a cup of tea this time round, but following my extensive research into decaf tea, my favourites are:

  • Aldi bags
  • M&S bags
  • Taylors of Harrogate loose leaf (the nicest but pricey)

Otherwise I'm drinking Twinings fruit infusions, mint tea and plain old hot water. BORING.

Every1KnowsJeffHesUsuallyACunt · 27/08/2015 16:12

I lurrrve tea! Could drink a lot of it but have really tried to reduce the caffeine. Fwiw I'm having 2 cups of tea a day in the morning to get me set up for the day and a can of coke mid afternoon. It's not doing me or the baby any harm.

The rest of the time I'm drinking water (yes it's very important but bloody boring) so I put ice chips in it and it really helps with the banality. And I might have hot honey and lemon, a hot ribena or even a vegetable oxo if I'm really pushing the boat out! At night I allow myself a horlicks before bed.

Lunastarfish · 27/08/2015 16:16

There are certain herbal teas you should avoid. Green tea also has a lot of caffeine in it.

I just had my one coffee a day then drank water or squash (except early pregnancy where I survived on coca cola.....)

Celen · 27/08/2015 16:17

I like redbush with a splash of milk.

PallasCat · 27/08/2015 16:22

Celen I think redbush may be my saviour.

Luna yes indeed - got my BFP while on holiday in a very remote community, only one shop for miles type of place, and the only herbal tea they had was raspberry leaf, which is a mega no. That and two empty spaces on the shelves for mint and chamomile which were out of stock. I could've cried.

Three cups of normal tea, then switching to Yogi classic (cinnamon). And loads of Ribena.

beardsrock · 27/08/2015 16:49

Mine was mint tea and water.

Also had the odd hot choc, but this piles on the pounds. You can also get flavored teas - cinnamon etc, nice for autumn.

Have to admit now I'm not pregnant anymore I'm back to my 5 x coffee a day habit...

babybat · 27/08/2015 17:04

I've switched to M&S half caff coffee, usually having two cups of that in the morning, then ribena with fizzy water or redbush tea in the afternoon. There's a nice redbush & vanilla one that's lovely with milk - think it's made by Dragonfly?

RooibosTeaAgain · 27/08/2015 17:07

Rooibos Tea ( redbush) hence my name!

GothicRainbow · 27/08/2015 17:11

I've completely gone off tea and coffee this pregnancy so I've been having fruit/mint tea, hot choc if I need something sweeter and currently I've been craving cold milk so have been drinking that a lot.

I do really miss my first cup of coffee to kick start my day though, hoping my dislike will disappear after the 3 month mark!

Junosmum · 27/08/2015 17:19

Water (cold) and decaf yorkshire tea. it's better than the other decafs.

ispyfispi · 27/08/2015 17:40

Ovaltine ???? it has folic acid in and still tastes good with half milk/half water

scarednoob · 27/08/2015 17:41

I hate tea and coffee myself - but when my friend was pregnant, I got her hooked on teapigs by taking her to a café near me that has their whole range! have a look, loads of caffeine free ones:

XingXingFox · 27/08/2015 17:43

I'm like this with coffee. It's been awful! I've switched to decaf and hot chocolate but by god I can't wait for the real stuff.

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/08/2015 17:43

Normal coffee, decaf Yorkshire Tea when I fancy it which is rarely.
The fruit teas from Lidl are the nicest I've found.

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/08/2015 17:45

Gothic I'm 11 weeks and am just about coming round to my morning coffee again!

Daffydil · 27/08/2015 17:45

I have completely gone off tea. All tea. Normal, decaf, herbal. I can't face any of it.

I have accidentally developed a bad hot chocolate habit. I limit myself to two cups a day, but it's a struggle.

Skiptonlass · 27/08/2015 17:49

Another vote for the Yorkshire decaf from me.

I couldn't keep anything down for months and went right off tea until about 20 weeks. After that I got the Yorkshire decaf but I soon slipped back into my old ways... Now having 4-5 cups of regular a day. Meh - I've been good with everything else and I like my tea weak...

Honestly, a few weak cuppas aren't going to do you much harm. It's not like you're snorting pro plus. I had a caffeinated tea first thing and until mid morning then switched to the decaf.

1wokeuplikethis · 27/08/2015 18:00

PG TIPS decaff.

I have 2 cups of normal tea and a medium latte 3 days of the week. The other days I have 3 cups of tea. I eat a lot of chocolate too.

So probably tipping my caffeine allowance.

Other than this, I like chai latte, hot water & lemon, pukka bedtime tea.

Might try some hot Ribena again after this thread.

But then again, I don't particularly like sweet/sugary drinks.

Hot milk!

lostindubai · 27/08/2015 18:00

I found fruit infusions really helped when I went through my last winter pregnancy and needed to warm up.

saivartelija · 27/08/2015 19:11

I have been known to enjoy a mug of plain boiled water like Laquila. It's soothing, and somehow the mouthfeel or something is different to drinking cold water.

I usually love my tea, but have gone right off it so far this pregnancy!
