Moses basket or crib?

Hi there, my first baby is due on 19th December 2015. Very excited, but so much to think about! We're starting to think about bed for baby and I'm just wondering if it's better to get a Moses basket or a crib? All advice much appreciated! Ask keen to hear from anyone else who is due a Christmas baby! Lou x

IME babies outgrow a Moses basket by 10 weeks, whearas a crib/cradle would last longer.

However, they are very portable for carrying about the house, which is a plus. Remember, you'll also have a pram with a carrycot though, so you can use that to put your baby to sleep in.

You can buy foam nests to put in your cot so it can be used from birth.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and I used a Moses basket for both DC, but this time I'm just going to use my pram for downstairs and a cot with a nest for upstairs.

My baby is due on the 18th December, so this Christmas is going to be very special!
As this is my first I've been feeling a little lost with sleeping arrangement however I'm using a Moses basket When baby is first born, I'd find it easy to move round so that in the day time the baby can sleep down stairs. especially as it's Christmas I expect to get a lot of visitors so it would be nice to be able to have the baby sleeping comfortably in the living room (although some prams have carry cots suited for this).
I have a cot too which he will use as soon as he's out grown the Moses basket!

I had a big, long baby (9lbs, 52cm) and at 11 weeks he's still in his crib with a lot of room to grow. My friends who bought moses baskets have been putting their babies into their cots at around 9 weeks because they outgrew them. Fine if you can fit the cot into your bedroom but not so great if you can't, as the advice is to have baby in your room for the first 6 months. He sleeps in the crib at night and in the carrycot from his pram during the day - that's been great as I was able to take it into any room, it's also approved for overnight sleeping (silver cross) so we used it for when we were visiting the in-laws. He's getting too big for it now though so sleeps in his bouncy chair during the day. The only thing I'd suggest though would be to avoid cribs with bars on them (DS gets his left arm stuck in them so we've had to fashion a cardboard wall for that side) and to avoid the ones which rock side to side, as there's a risk they'll roll onto their tummy. Looking back I wish I'd gone for the Next to Me crib, my friend says the rocking motion sends her DD straight to sleep and it has no bars.

Hi Louise! I'm getting a hand me down crib for free which is going in our room and I've bought a 2nd band Moses basket for next to nothing to put baby in whilst downstairs.

I had a Moses basket with both of my first two babies but they outgrew them very quickly (by 8 weeks for second baby as he was 10lb at birth).
This time I have opted for a compact cot in our bedroom as I wanted something that will last 6-8 months and couldn't fit a full cot comfortably. Baby will sleep in his carrycot downstairs until he outgrows it and we will then use a travel cot which can double up as a playpen /safe space later on.

DC 3 due at New Years here (come and join us on the Christmas and new year antenatal thread!). I'm going with a pram with decent carry cot certified for overnight sleeping for naps downstairs I the day , and a bedside crib for upstairs. Had one with DS 2 and it was brilliant for being able to co- sleep without worrying that I could squash him!

I had my first baby 4 months ago and he was only in his Moses basket for about 8 weeks and even then would only nap in there. (Luckily we didn't buy it and it was a hand-me-down!)
We bought the Chicco Next to Me crib and it is much better- but not as peaceful as on the advert!
