Meat marinaded in alcohol?

Is it safe to eat a bit of meat that has been marinaded in brandy?
I am with friends and this is the meal they are planning. I'm not overly keen but kinda have no choice now.

The odds are that all or almost all the alcohol will have cooked off by the time it gets as far as your plate, so I really wouldn't worry - just enjoy the fact that someone else has cooked for you.

PamPoovey · 25/08/2015 14:35

Of course you have a choice. Say you don't fancy it and either take/buy something else or just eat the sides?

It sounds foul btw. I wouldn't eat it either.

PamPoovey · 25/08/2015 14:36

And while foul, it would be safe.

I think there would be more risk from undercooked meat than from that amount of alcohol if you think of the amount they'd use and then the portion of that you would eat and also alcohol-reducing cooking.

Brandy is normally burnt off while cooking

Summersalmostgone · 25/08/2015 15:15

Thanks everyone

It doesn't burn off as much as you think. Graphic below is from new scientist (the Xmas 2014 issue if you've got a subscription.)

Of course, even if all the alcohol is retained, you're still getting a reasonably small dose, but it's not true that it all burns off (quite surprisingly really, the boiling point of ethanol is low.)

Work out roughly how much of a unit you'd get if all of it was still there, then divide by the rough % of the dish you're actually eating, and it's still not a huge amount (unless they've pickled it Lord nelson style...)

Its steak so not cooked for long. I have no idea how much brandy it's actually in.

I'm a bit grrrr that this was thought of as a good thing to serve me.

Why the hell would you ruin a perfectly fine steak with brandy?!

Junosmum · 25/08/2015 21:35

Considering that most sauces contain between a tablespoon and glass of the alcohol you'll be consuming no more than a unit at the absolute most. I really wouldn't worry. Enjoy someone cooking for you. Sounds delicious to me. I still put red wine in my Bolognese and other sauces.

UrethraFranklin1 · 25/08/2015 21:38

You could even just drink a brandy. It's not actually poisonous you know.

Summersalmostgone · 25/08/2015 23:20

If it was wine if not mind but I'd never consume spirits while pregnant.
