12 weeks into my first pregnancy, just wondering when people started buying stuff. We have no family who've had kids so will have to buy absolutely everything. Being due in March should I wait till Xmas sales to buy big ticket items or as usual am I thinking way too much ahead of myself.

I waited till after the 20 week scan for both pregnancies. You'll find that all the major supermarkets will have baby events periodically where you can pick up some really great deals. Stock up on essentials here, nappies, bottles, wipes, etc.

chopsface · 23/08/2015 14:56

24 weeks tomorrow and I'm still paranoid that I'm buying things too early! I think we bought our first items at 21/22 weeks and we've looked into but not bought our big stuff.

mummyneedinganswers · 23/08/2015 15:11

26 weeks tomorrow and bought everything very early. Had my cot and pram and everything in at 18 weeks had room decorated by 20 weeks some people Re superstitious my granny refused to buy me anything until 24 weeks. It's personal choice, I'm glad I got my stuff in early though as HD I left it to now I would have been stuck money wise as alot needs done in my house before she arrives x xx

Skiptonlass · 23/08/2015 15:19

We waited till after 20 week scan then we've gradually picked things up - gives you more time to shop around for deals on the bigger items and let's you spread the cost. I'm glad we didn't leave it too long as I'm now largely housebound with spd - online shopping only!

lemon101 · 23/08/2015 15:30

I'm 25 weeks and have started by clothes and bedding. We're borrowing a carseat and a co-sleeper from a friend. I've got a lot of things bookmarked on my computer however and have researched things like reusable nappies, bottles etc so feel like I am ready to deploy the credit card when required!

I had the preparation urge descend on me from about 22 weeks.

Cheshirehello79 · 23/08/2015 16:50

Started buying little things I.e bibs / mittens and first cute outfit at 12 weeks. After 12 weeks appointment - started buying all essentials ie clothing/ nappies etc as there was events everywhere I looked and cheap. By 16 I ordered baby furniture - after 20 weeks ordered pram/ car seat . I'm now 25+ 4 and can put my feet up and just wait till about early nov to decorate the nursery. I tried to be well organised as pregnancy hasn't been smooth sailing and just gives me a piece of mind that I don't need to worry.

As you're due in March I would say wait till Christmas sale and you'll get a bargain then but then again you might not have a lot of choice things being out of stock etc.. Congrats and I would say if you're happy to buy stuff - do it I wouldn't buy electrical etc.. Now because of warranty

BluePeter · 23/08/2015 17:10

I'm due in the middle of February and I have already started buying things so as to spread the cost as much as possible. I bought a pushchair as soon as the 12 week scan was done. Will buy crib and cot next month and car seat and isofix stuff the month after that. Chest of drawers in November. That should leave Christmas fairly clear for normal presents and sleepsuits/nappies etc.
I did have a wobble about superstitions but then my rational brain took over and I thought about what a pain it would be to choose and buy the stuff all at once.

MummyPiggy87 · 23/08/2015 17:30

Started buying around 20 weeks.
We now have everything except toiletries (nappies, wipes, creams)
We have all clothes/blankets/bedding/bibs, bottles, furniture, steriliser, crib and Moses basket, car seat and iso, pram, bouncy chair, bath and other little bits.
I'm now 27 weeks!
I'm glad I've got the big stuff out the way as I'm feeling more exhausted as the weeks go by and starting to hurt went bending! There's so much to get you don't realise till you make a list!

BeautifulBatman · 23/08/2015 17:34

I bought nothing until my 20 week scan. When that all looked good, I bought a pack of three vests. That was it until about 3 weeks ago (29 weeks). But then I didn't even tell family I was pregnant until I was 14 weeks. I'm a cautious person.

ijustwannadance · 23/08/2015 17:58

My DD has march birthday, i bought nothing until the xmas. Got some great deals. If you buy online a lot of the biggies like kiddicare pricematch. Also, the new ranges come out dec/jan. I had picked out a travel system then it was released in new nicer colour so was able to pre-order. Not really superstitious, just didn't see the point in having it all in the house before that as room wasn't decorated etc.
I'd also recommend actually visiting a big mothercare or similar to phyically see the prams etc (even if then go home and buy online cheaper) to make sure you like how it feels to push, weight, easy to fold/fit in car.

Hairballs · 23/08/2015 19:06

I'm with batman. I won't be buying anything until after 20 weeks. Did the same with DS. I totally get the organisational aspect of buying things early but I'm cautious.

Ladypug · 23/08/2015 19:11

I'm 31 weeks and so far have a pram and a sleep suit (and nursery furniture I just ordered this week!) feel I left it a bit late as very heavy and tired now but we're moving house too next week so didn't want to do too much before that!

Ally1234 · 23/08/2015 19:16

I remember with my first I went to an antenatal class at 34 weeks where they were saying I should have my hospital bag packed by then. Hadn't bought a single thing so went on a big shopping spree to mothercare the next day!
I'm 24 weeks tomorrow, so far dh has bought bottles, steriliser, car seat and a rattle! I've bought a bouncy chair as it was on a good offer. So far that's it. Due in December so prob do a big shop October/November time for cot and buggy etc unless good deals come up before then x

As always, some great advise. I've always been a cart before the horse kind of person Grin

Even if you don't want to buy yet I would get out there and do your browsing & research now
I'm 29 weeks and have had SPD & sciatica since 16 weeks so I'm very nearly immobile at this point and would've had to leave all the decisions to someone else if I hadn't shopped early
You don't know what'll happen

Cornberry · 23/08/2015 22:27

I think 12 weeks is a bit early, but then it took me weeks to settle on a travel system and I had this done by about 30 weeks. The bigger things are probably wise to start thinking about after the 20 week scan because by the time you're on maternity leave you might be too exhausted. I'm 39 weeks now and I'm so relieved to have all the shopping done because I can barely move! I think it's a good plan to make a list of essentials and keep your eyes open for special offers/sales etc straight away though.

Fuzzyduck21 · 24/08/2015 05:45

Congratulations Grin

I chose everything I wanted but didnt buy anything till around 33/34 weeks. I'm now 36 weeks and have just started buying clothes. It's entirely up to you as to when you feel ready. I've known people who are 8 wks to buy things xx

StAlphonsosPancakeBreakfast · 24/08/2015 05:55

I'm 29 weeks and haven't bought a thing yet, I'm too busy trying to find a place to live! I'm hoping to have found somewhere and moved myself and bump in by about 35 weeks, and shopping will just have to wait till then.

So there is a lot of variation - whatever you're comfortable with is fine!
