Newborn clothes

Advice needed please ladies. I'm off to the shops today to buy the newborn clothes I'll need. Please can someone recommend how much and what I'll need? I know people will get us presents but I always get people 3-6 months as assume everyone will get them newborn. How many sleepsuits/hats etc will I need? We have a washing machine but no tumble drier. I'm 32+2 and having a c-section for medical reasons so may be in hospital for a while (I assume). Thanks.

I have loads I only bought a few 0-1 month as baby grows quickly also I have GD so don't know how big baby will be. Most kg mine I bought in 0-3. I bought loads of sleep suits and vests (far to many but couldn't resist)I have about 12 hats. Some people don't buy to many as they don't get the wear out of them but I just think of days when baby could be sick and constantly changing her would be a nightmare if you haven't had time to do washing.

so far I've bought about 10 sleep suits in 0-1 and 10 vests and 2 outfits and about 3 hats and some mitts.. I also got a few pairs of socks just incase as I won't really be leaving the house that much as baby isn't due till Jan and it's gna be pretty darn cold
then I've got alot in 0-3 .. way to much really but you can't go wrong with sleep suits baby's just look so comfy in them hehe
if friends of family want to buy for baby I'm asking for clothes in 3-6 or 6-9 and I've text them what month range the seasons will be so they don't but winter clothes for summer haha

I wouldn't get many newborn unless you know or its likely you will have a small baby. Many can wear 0-3 from birth and only fit in newborn for a couple of weeks.

We use about five vests and five babygrows and a couple of nice outfits / babygrows for visiting people. That was enough until the babies got mobile for ours that was when they were in 9-12 month size clothes.

Oh and with buying big for the right season remember they don't wear the correct size all the time. Ds was in newborn until six weeks and in 3-6 by 2 months. DD is only just still in 6-9 and isn't quite 7 months yet.

Def get minimal newborn/up to 1 month stuff. Or keep labels and receipts so that you can exchange easily.
Although my first baby was 7lbs and wore the tiny stuff for a few weeks my second was an unexpected 10lb and didn't fit any of the newborn stuff I had packed for him. Had to send dp home to get the 0-3 stuff.

Oh and regarding gifts, it's really easy to exhange for different sizes if you need to.
Shops like JL, M&S, Next will all exchange without a receipt.

My DS is a week old and already in 0-3 as he was a surprise big baby. I wouldn't buy too many newborn outfits as mine have been wasted.

My dd was 7lb 12oz and was in newborn for about a month we also had some sleep suits from Next in up to 1 month these were good until dd properly fitted 0-3. My dd only fit into 3-6 months at 4 months old.
Dd only wore a hat when we went out and now at 4 1/2 months she has a jacket with a hood because she wiggles her head and the hats come off.
If you have not got a dryer I would buy 10 vests and 10 sleep suits, cardigans to go over the top, a couple of hats, a jacket or padded pram suit.
Muslins however many you have got or planning on buying, double it you use loads.

A guide on the different brands I have used -
BHS are small
Sainsburys - v long
asda - do some with dream skin technology they are lovely and soft but a bit more expensive.
John Lewis - big
Morrisons - The nutmeg range is brill they look like new even with lots of washing
Jojo maman Bebe - wide
Next - fit well, wash well but lots of my visitors bought from here if you want to avoid duplicates.

I have a dryer but I hang dd things on one of those peg things for socks and hang it in the utility room and they are dry by morning. If you are planning on breastfeeding the colostrum is quite yellow and stains the 1st few days clothes so a tub of vanish is useful to get the stains out.

I didn't buy any newborn clothes (just got 0-3 months) and then ended up with a 4lb baby. She's 12 weeks now and is just fitting into the 0-3 month sizes!

Luckily friends and family were on hand with the tiny baby and newborn sizes!

My (very average sized baby- 3.2kg) was in newborn/0-1 month clothes for about 4 weeks. She was completely swamped by most 0-3month clothes until then.

DD was small, she's 11 weeks now and still fits into her newborn stuff and up to 1m is still quite baggy on her.

0-3 looks positively massive!

Some babies are light, some babies are heavy, some are long, some are short.

I had quite short babies so they were both in newborn for a good month-6 weeks, and newborn was actually pretty huge for the first week or so.

However, they will eventually grow in to the bigger sizes so no harm erring on the side of 0-3 if you're worried about waste. Dp can always pick up more newborn at any big supermarket if you run out (like we did on day 2!)

I've just gone straight into 0-3 with both of mine- they were average sized but long! Clothes were baggy for a bit but newborn hardly lasts anytime unless baby is particularly little.

My DC1 was 6lb11 and DC2 was 5lb11. DC2 is now 6 weeks and just about moving from tiny baby size to newborn/up to 1 month (now nearly 8lb). So I needed more small size things than I anticipated, plus I don't like putting him in things too big as his legs seems to get tangled! I had about 10 tiny sleepsuits and vests on the go (mostly hand me downs from friends). That said, I'd buy a pack of smaller sleepsuits (Ie up to 7.5lb ish size, first size or tiny) and then a pack of the next size up (up to 10lb ish size - usually newborn/up to 1 month). I wouldn't bother with anything other than sleepsuits (ie no outfits). Remember it's so easy now to order online / next day click and collect / buy in supermarkets if you need more! I like next and sainsburys best, found mothercare sleepsuits far too wide and baggy and stretched too much. I had a c section and was in for 3 nights (usual is 2), tiny babies dont make much mess so only wore a sleepsuit per day, plus a spare - so I'd take 4 to hospital (and vests) plus one hat (they only really need a hat immediately after birth). Make sure DH/DP or someone knows where extras of everything is at home in case you need more brought in!

I was predicted a big baby so bought 0-1 and 0-3. Cue baby being tiny and having nothing to wear. DH had to go out and buy newborn babygrows. You can easily get through half a dozen a day so I'd buy more especially if you don't have an airing cupboard which in my experience dried things fully overnight.

My advice is to buy lots but buy cheap. You will get through loads and won't have time or energy for frequent laundry so having plenty of spares is great BUT there is no point spending lots because they grow so quickly and often ruin them with poo anyway. I suggest eBay bundles, local Facebook mum selling groups, friends or relations who've done with their baby clothes and don't mind passing them on... and just a few nice ones for showing off.

We have LOADS from newborn til 24 months. for cheaper than dirt.

Our local Facebook Baby and todller selling group - parents advertise giant bags of stuff for a fiver (like 50 items in each) - I claimed in the mornings did pick ups after work - and we are overflowing with a glut of lovely awesome well kept clothes which are too many to count.

Think along the lines of - 45 vests 0-3 minths for £6. Yep.

Cheaper than ebay bundles with postage and bids and faffing about on paypal. Find your local FB group for this kind of stuff and off you go!

And PS: Our dirt cheap collections include John Rocha Zara Mothercare Gap Next and tons of GAP including their coats, pramsuits, jackets, snowsuits etc in pristine condition. These winter items came for £1 each.

7-10 each vest and babygros should do the trick. I would get Newborn/first size, up to 1 month and 0-3, although most babies don't fit into 0-3 until later on.

Don't buy any outfits, most people when they bring presents don't bring babygros, they bring outfits (but that's just my experience).

A couple thin hats and 1-2 warm hats for outside, a few cardis and some sort of pram suit. I would also buy socks as although babygros have feet, if it's chilly in the house you might want to put them on, especially if baby is lying on a playmat, so not covered with blankets.

I wouldn't buy anything beyong 0-3 just yet, you don't know how quickly your baby will grow and what season it will be!
