Hi, we've been scratching our heads and tearing out hair out in equal measures and hope someone can help/offer advice!

Almost a week after going to the GP to confirm pregnancy my wife experienced some spotting which meant a trip to the early pregnancy unit. The scan showed a gestational sac with a yolk sac and a tiny shadow of an embryo, we were told to come back two weeks and two days later, at which we saw that the original sac hadnt grown by much but two empty gestation sacs had appeared on the scan.

We thought we were up to 8 weeks, the sonographer asked for a second opinion, and then advised that the first fetus hadnt grown as much as expected and to come back in another 9 days. between then and now, my wife has been bleeding heavily (2-3 pads per day) and passing small and a couple of slightly larger 50p sized clots w. Bright red blood.

We're totally confused and kicking ourselves for not asking enough questions.

So, has anyone else had two sacs appear a couple of weeks after a scan? Or had a baby that was slow out of the blocks but grew faster?

Please help! Confused

No experience with this sorry but sound maybe like this was a multiple pregnancy and one of the babies isn't sticking.

Sounds like either your wife had a multiple pregnancy and one embryo hasn't made it, in which case the next scan should show one embryo, preferably with a heartbeat at that gestation.

Or unfortunately your wife has experienced a miscarriage of both embryos.

Must be such a worrying time for you both. I wish you all the best.

I do know of a friend who had an early scan showing she was carrying triplets (three sacs) but bled heavily a week or two later. A second scan showed she had miscarried one. She now has healthy 4 year old twins.
