Breech baby head shape

Hi there,

I am due to go in for a section next Tuesday as my baby is in the breech position. I have only just now came across articles about breech babies having mis-shaped heads. I'm wondering if anyone here had a breech baby and if their head was just normal shaped? Also were they able to straighten out ok once they were born? I see photos of babies with their feet up at their heads! I'm thinking I should stay off google!

Hi,
Depending on type of breech and how long the baby has been in that position then they may have their legs up near there heads but I have never heard of breech babies having mis-shaped heads. Head down vaginal births are more likely to be mis-shapef and have moulding as the plates in their skull cross during birth. Ventouse and forceps also can cause mis-shaped heads.
Babies born by planned section usually have a perfectly round head as no squishing through birth canal. My DD was footing breech and born by elective section-her head was perfectly shaped! Try not to worry and stop googling. x

2 breech babies here, 1 of which was franks breech, the other needed forceps on her head in my section cut because she was twisting the wrong way, and both had beautifully perfect heads!

Mine was undiagnosed breech until 10 days overdue. CSection the next day and he was quite large at 9lb9 and his head isn't quite right when you look from above. I'm certain it's because he was breech but we were told it would correct itself. He's 2.5yrs and I believe it will be misshapen for a long time. (See plagiocephaly) His ears are in different places. Luckily it's only noticeable from above.

I have had 2 breech babies, one frank and one footling and both heads are absolutely fine. One of them did have a hip condition though (we are yet to find out about the other) which is higher risk with breech so make sure you get the hip scan.
It's all fixed now though!

Ds1 was breech and I had a CS. His head shape was absolutely perfect, loads of people commented on it.

Could the article have been referring to breech babies born vaginally?

My DS was breech and ELCS. He came out with a perfectly shaped head!

It was talking about if the head is lodged between the rib cage but my baby's head moves around all the time so I know it's not stuck but has been breech since 32 weeks so hoping all will be ok!

Mine was born by cs after undiagnosed breech. His head was pretty misshapen and his legs were up by his head. Was totally unprepared for it and remember being quite worried at the time. His head sorted itself quite quickly I think, maybe took a few months.

He must have had a certain look as several hcps asked if he was breech just by looking at him.
Also be prepared for ultrasound scans to check for hip displacia. We had to have three or four before he was given the all clear.

DD was breech and has a perfect head. It took her a few weeks to be able to lie her legs down, which was quite funny. She slept in a Sleepyhead so we just used to rest them on the bumper bit.

DD was frank breech with her head lodged very painfully in my ribs. She did have a bit of a crevice at the top of her forehead, you could feel it but not see it. She's nearly 1 and you'd have no idea. Her head is perfect! So if it does happen, it will only be temporary. If baby is moving about then most likely their head will be perfect I'd strongly recommend an ELCS too. Wonderful experience!

She did have hip dysplasia though. And like a pp said, her legs were in the air when she was born. They came down quickly though. Got some very cute and funny pictures of her!

Thank you for all your replies. I'm just a born worrier lol but hearing your stories are helping. And thanks Team about the elective section comment, that's very daunting for me but helps to hear good things.

My daughter was a breech baby.
We did everything to try and change her position but she was having none of it!
We were advised to have a c-section. She was absolutely fine but her head was a bit flat from being squashed up to the top of my rib cage. All the nurses that saw her new she was breech.
Her flat head corrected itself very quickly, a few months or so.
Anyway she's now a pre teen with a perfect shaped head and plenty of thick glossy hair that requires enormous amounts of styling these days. Good luck to you!
