Longhaul holiday in first trimester

We are planning to start TTC DC1 in January/February next year, and we are also planning a long haul holiday to the USA in April 2016. So I could be anywhere from not pregnant at all to 12-14 weeks pregnant on the holiday. Is this mad? I've never been pregnant before. I'm worried about how I might feel, implications for travel insurance, and what on earth would happen if I had a miscarriage or other complications whilst away!

We went long haul when I was about 12 weeks.
Second trimester is sometimes quoted as the best time to travel, nausea and tiredness gone, bump manageable.
Get travel insurance as soon as you book.
If you need medical support, you use the travel insurance. Read the small print, and check all pregnancy related things are covered.

We flew long haul (24hrs) when I was in first trimester, HG and a 2 year old and it hasn't put me off! It was fine and perfectly ok for baby. We let our insurance company know and it didn't effect premiums etc. They said it only makes a difference in final trimester and even then with a doc note still ok to fly! Have a fab in the US!

My view is that you need to carry on with your life and not think about TTC. It's just something you do whilst carrying on with your life.

I'm sad to say that these things to don't always go to plan in that it could take longer than you think, or in my case, I had 3 x mc's.

So book your hols, book the travel insurance to go with it, plan your amazing holiday and if you do catch straight away then you have a baby on the way and a fab holiday.

And well if you haven't quite got there yet, you've still got an amazing holiday and after all, life happens when you are busy making plans

We were in New York when I was around 8 weeks pregnant and being sick over 20 times a day (I have HG and at that point just thought I had morning sickness). We had first class flights which made the travel fine but I wouldn't have wanted to be in economy... I'm still pleased we went. You never know what's going to happen and many people don't conceive right away.

I definitely agree with carrying on with life. There's no point waiting to TTC until after the holiday because what if it doesn't happen for months, or years?
If it does happen straight away, then hopefully my biggest problem will be working out how to hide it from the people where are going on holiday with!

On a practical note, the US has first world healthcare but it's horrifically expensive! so you'd want to make sure you had insurance that covered everything, just in case something did happen. Which hopefully it won't!

Go ahead and plan the trip, and as mentioned get a comprehensive travel insurance policy that will cover you A) if you have to cancel for health reasons and B) if you have to get treatment in the US.

I've been on four trips during my pregnancy, including one long haul (14.5 hour flight). The trips I took during first trimester were only affected by my food aversion so I didn't have much of an appetite, but otherwise had a great time and one was a city break with lots of walking.

With baby's pending arrival looming closer I'm so glad we traveled during the pregnancy and didn't cancel trips, we won't be able to do these things easily once the little one arrives. And of course you might not be pregnant by April 2016 anyway.

A group of us drove thousands of miles on a road trip in Canada. I was 12 weeks to 16. It was good, I took prescription Gravol every day and ate very lightly. We were camping July to Aug. mostly, sometimes we booked a hotel for a few nights.

I went to the USA at 12 weeks for a fortnight. It was fine. Just make sure you have decent travel insurance.

I'm off to US at 22 weeks and I've booked my insurance with Insure & Go and I'm insured for all pregnancy complications until 32 weeks

I also flew 6.5 hours at 26 weeks, 28 weeks and I'm flying again at 35 weeks.

I found out I was pregnant in Australia and so had to fly back at about 6ish weeks. It's not mad at all, you don't know how long it will take to conceive so don't put your life on hold.
If you do get pregnant then just check your insurance and make sure you have flight socks for the flights. You might be shattered I spent a lot of time sleeping in the back of cars in Australia! Enjoy your final few baby free holidays!
If anything did go wrong it would of course be horrible, but the U.S. has world class healthcare and personally that wouldn't stop me going.

You'll be fine. I found out I was pregnant visiting family in Australia, managed to keep up a full schedule of weddings and visits and then went on to a long-awaited hiking trip in Japan on the way back to the UK, hiking 50km over two days. I was pretty knackered, mind, but overall it was fine - plenty of naps and prenatal vitamins got me through.

Agree about the TTC point made above, by the way. It took me ages to get pregnant. If I'd put my life on hold waiting for it to happen it would have made for a very dull year!
