When can you dye hair?

I'm 11w5. i asked the midwife if I could dye my hair. She scoffed and said "well I wouldn't if I were you- unless you want to look like a freak! It might not take and you'll look like a freak for the rest of the pregnancy!"
Any thoughts on this? Or more helpful advice?
My hair is naturally red and I've only started dying it in the past year to cover grey which is starting to come through. I feel like I look like shit- all bloated and bad skin and I could do with dying my hair to lift myself a bit!

How terribly supportive.

My mum teaches hairdressing, specialising in colour. Naturally not medical advice, but she sees no problem in dying your hair whilst pregnant, scalp sensitivity aside.

Just dyed mine and feel so much better for it.

Interestingly, mum didn't know she was having me until she went for her regular perm and it wouldn't take, perms are apparently a different beast!
