How will I know if I've miscarried?

I'm 5 weeks preg with second child and have been bleeding since yesterday morning - after I go for a pee, a slight period like bleed happens - not anywhere near as heavy as a period but more blood than I'm happy about! Had a scan yesterday and they said the baby was there but we'll just have to see if the pregnancy lasts. I'm still bleeding today - sometimes I've been to loo and there has been no blood, then last time there was some. How will I know if I lose the baby? Will there be masses of blood - heavier than a period? Sorry for the ramble

oh ((hugs)) to be honest, it sounds like an implantation bleed. I had the same. What colour blood is it?

Kabsy · 22/11/2006 14:04

I had early bleeding with dd (implant bleed apparently) I know two people - my friend also my cousin had bleeding on and off throughout their prgs and both fine! I have had two early miscarriages - I found that it was very painful - more so than period and a fair amount of heavier darker blood than normal period. Would go to to GP if worried. Try not to stress too much think you will know when and if it happens type of thing! Thinking of you and good luck sure you'll be fine!

Charleesunnysunsun · 22/11/2006 14:04

If you do loose the baby you will probably bleed alot heavier like a normal period and you will possibly have bad stomach cramps.

Put your feet up and rest sweetheart i hope things turn out for the best. Try not to worry there is nothing you can do either way if it's going to happen it will unfortunatley. Hugs.

THank you for the support guys. It's all a bit scary. Quootipie, the colour is more red than brown. What is an implantation bleed? Is it bad?

OP posts:
lulumama · 22/11/2006 14:15

red blood is fresh bleeding..brown blood is old.

implantation bleed can occur as the fertilised egg burrows into the womb lining.....

sadly.....if you are going to miscarry, as charley says, there is nothing you can do to prevent it....try to rest if you can.

if the miscarriage is inevitable, there will most likely be an incrfease in bleeding, pain & cramping and you may well pass some clots.....

do return to A&E if bleeding very heavy or experiencing a lot of pain xxxx

shoobaloo · 22/11/2006 14:17

So an implantation bleed would be fresh or old? And how long does it go on for?

OP posts:
Kabsy · 22/11/2006 14:18

Implantation (I think this is what happens please anyone correct me as i am bluffing this one!) is when the embryo attaches to the um.... uteurus wall (?) to form the pregnancy sack which will then form the placenta, but whatever is - the main good news is that it is what is supposed to happen it just sometimes is a bit more vigorous (my midwifes words) than others!

thehairybabysmum · 22/11/2006 14:20

When i started to bleed my friend who had had a m/c said i would know if i did have one, without TMI she was right. There was more blood than a period, but then i have light periods.

Unfortunately as the others say there is nothing you can do, just rest and try not to worry too much at this stage.

Are tey going to re-scan you in a couple of weeks??

Kabsy · 22/11/2006 14:20

See told you I was bluffing! But good luck! I'm just 9 weeks prg with no2 (4th prg) but hopefully no2!! Good luck! xx

eca · 22/11/2006 14:20

When I had early bleeding the ob told me that after they'd seen the heartbeat on a scan (which I'm presuming they did for you yesterday) the risk of MC falls dramatically.

Take care

Kabsy · 22/11/2006 14:22

Oh eca! You made my day!! I saw and heard heart beat on early scan last week!! xx

typhoonsmum · 22/11/2006 16:29

My miscarriage started as light pink spotting the day after I discovered I was preg. by the weekend it was dark red blood on wiping. When I actually lost the baby it was heavy bleeding and strong pains. I don't take painkillers for period pain but I took co-codamol and dihydrocodiene and it only took the edge off.

shoobaloo · 22/11/2006 21:24

Thanks again everyone. There has been some bleeding again today (though this morning I went to the loo a couple of times and there was no bleeding, it has now started again). I've resigned myself to the fact that there is nothing I can do but wait - , but I've just got to believe that if it doesn't work out, then this particular baby wasn't meant to be and we'll just have to try again later. BUt fingers crossed it will work out ok. Good luck to all of you here who are going through similar things!

Still bleeding today when I've been to the loo - it seems to be a bit thicker too . No cramps or pain, but I think this could be the beggining of the end. How long will this go on for before I actually miscarry?

Hi shoobaloo

Sorry you are going through this.

When I m/c (at approx 5wks) I had about 3 days of brown bleeding which was quite light then one day of v painful cramps before heavier bleeding started with clots.

I really hope this isn't the case for you. Take care X

Kabsy · 23/11/2006 10:32

Hi Shoobaloo,

Sorry to hear still some bleeding, my fingers are crossed for you I know how awful it is as I said I lost two before dd arrived and now 9 weeks myself and hoping and praying all is going to be alright.

As you said, if it is to be then there will be a good reason and you can always try again.

Take care of yourself xx

eca · 23/11/2006 10:44

oh shoobaloo,

sending you lots of love this morning. Did they tell you to go back to the docs/hospital or anything if the bleeding continued/got heavier?

thinking and praying for you

shoobaloo · 23/11/2006 15:32

thanks so much for the support guys. I spoke with the MW this morning and she's given me an appt for 2nd Dec. There's not much they can do until then unless it all gets worse of course. I feel like I'm having a period but without as much blood - I keep trying to forget about it and be positive for DS's sake but everytime I feel a 'bleed' it just reminds me... guess we just have to keep waiting...

Shoobaloo, I had really bad cramps when I mc last year. They were horrendous, made me wail (sp) they were that bad. Also had clots.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Take it easy. x

MKG · 23/11/2006 15:52

shoobaloo,

This may not help, but when I went for my 7 week scan I was diagnosed with a hemorrhage, which can cause red blood like a period. Now I'm 14 weeks and it has corrected itself.

You may have something else other than a mc going on.

eca · 26/11/2006 22:06

Hi Shoobaloo
Just wondering how you are getting on?
Thinking of you
