Worried about ectopic

Since last night, I've had a little right shoulder tip pain - not super painful and on and off. This morning I had a lot of gas and found it painful after passing gas and using the toilet. I know these can be signs of ectopic and I'm terrified. I haven't had severe cramping or any bleeding, although i had slight cramps on both sides yesterday (which i assumed was because I'd walked so much). My dh isconvinced it's all in my head, but I'm really worried. Am I just worrying over nothing?

Go to the doctor or A&E today. I was pregnant thought something was wrong - didn't go ended up with a ruptured ectopic - almost died from internal bleeding. Started out as a sore tummy, ended up deteriorating fast unconscious at work, excruciating shoulder pain.

The shoulder pain might very well be pain from trapped gas. It is quite common and in early pregnancy you might find you have sluggish bowels and associated trapped wind.

However, you are in early pregnancy presumably and those symptoms can be early warning signs of ectopic. You must have this ruled out.

How pregnant are you? Are you booked in with a midwife yet? Do you know how your local early pregnancy unit works? Is it self referral or GP referral?

You really must see somebody today.

While you are waiting, do you have any peppermint tea or capsules? They will ease the gas pains quite a lot.

I've called the gp advice line but haven't heard back yet. I'm 5 weeks 4 days. Should I call NHS 111 now?

When I was just over 4weeks I had this pain and didn't feel right at all everyone just kept telling me its just morning sickness and your body preparing for growth so I let it go. Was in work the following day was Ill dizzy all the time being sick and really sore. Couldn't keep my eyes open and was very drousy. My manager refused to let me go home so I worked the full shift 10-7 and got home had my dinner and climbed into bed . I suddenly was crippled with pain. Felt like something exploded inside me was screaming and crying was excrutiating. Went to maternity assessment unit and they said it was ectopic and I was rushed to another hospital for surgery was given morphine and as was stable enough was told would have surgery that morning. When that morning came I requested to be rescanned and they did and found out it wasnt ectopic it was an ovarian cyst that ruptured and surgery wasn't needed.

I would advise you go to gp or a&e and get checked out could be nothing but I would advise not to wait just to be sure x

I went to the doc, who saw me straight away. He checked my abdomen and shoulder. He said he thinks the light cramping was my uterus stretching and when he checked the abdomen, there were none of the symptoms of ectopic pregnancy (like muscle spasms when he pressed on my belly) and on checking my shoulder, which is sore all the way to the neck, he thinks it's muscular. He also said that the shoulder pain usually presents after severe, persistent abdominal pain which I haven't had and he took a urine sample which was all normal with no blood or other indications of infection. So all in all, he said he can't guarantee it but he thinks the odds of ectopic pregnancy are very low and that I shouldn't worry. So I guess I'll try not to.

He's not sending you for a scan? I'm not sure that an assessment without a scan is as good as it could be... Does your local early pregnancy unit accept self referral? Alternative is going private, that's how they identified my ectopic.

He said I was too early for a scan to be medically helpful, but because of lack of abdominal symptoms he wasn't concerned. He said if you're having an ectopic pregnancy, when the doc presses on your stomach, the muscles spasm in defence of the embryo and also you continue to feel pain after he's finished pressing which didn't happen. He also was saying that if the shoulder pain was connected, it would be after having abdominal pain so it was unlikely to be connected. I do have a tendency to panic myself so I was happy to just accept his diagnosis - he's the senior partner at the gps and he's treated me before and been quick to send for scans, etc if needed. But I don't know.

The only reason I ask is that mine didn't present as ectopic, I think it would have probably just been a miscarriage with unknown cause in the end if we'd not seen an early scan to determine it.

The main thing is that you're comfortable with the info you've been given. It's easy to panic, as long as you're feeling better now that's the main thing. Ectopics aren't common x

Thanks, mrstothemr. Logically, you're right - I don't have any risk factors for one so the odds are small. I am quite an anxious person so I am sure that some of it is the result of that, not real symptoms. I guess I'll just wait and see - if I get anything new or worse, I'll know to act on it asap. We walked all over London yesterday with dh's brother and I wonder if some of the muscle pain/cramps were because of that. I did feel like I'd pushed myself too much.

Just popped on to check that you are ok - glad you are well and went to the doctor and congratulations, take it easy! Sorry I was a bit alarmist.
