hi guys

i am having a scan done next week at 8 weeks can they see at this stage through stomach or does it have to be internal?

it has to be internal, i think . i had 2 internals, one at 7 wks and one at 9 wks. it is not painful, feels like a tampon really and the lady who did mine was terrific. i didn't even know till i went in that it would be internal, but tbh i was so worried about baby that i didn't care. baby was fine and the pic you get is so clear, it's lovely. the 9 wk scan was the best one i had, better than one at 14 weeks and 20 weeks (external).

CrocodileKate · 20/11/2006 14:38

I had an internal for a seven week scan. Wasn't a problem.

can these increase the risk of miscarriage do u know? i had a internal b4 and pregnancy resulted in m/c not sure if that had anything to do with it?

internal until 10 weeks or thereabouts...don;t worry..you are covered with a sheet and the sonographer will ensure you are comfortable, you may have to shift about a bit, and lift your bum up to ensure they can get a good look at LO.....hope it goes ok for you...x

i have had 6 in total..they are just a little uncomfortabl, not painful;//

ginmummy · 20/11/2006 14:42

I had one at 6 weeks (when they didn't know if it was an ectopic or not), one at 12 weeks and another at 20 weeks. I'm quite hefty and I guess the external one couldn't see through all the excess adipose tissue (aka blubber).

It didn't feel uncomfortable, just cold in the same way that the speculum used for taking smears is cold.

it shouldn't do.nadine, nothing is going into the uterus..so it should be perfectly safe.sadly, last time was probably a coincidence and the scan had nothing to do with the miscarriage...xx

Ive had two normal scans at 7 and 9 weeks though. It does seem that internal is more likely looking at responces here though.

EllieChocolateOrange · 20/11/2006 15:01

at our 9 weeks, you could see head, eyes, limbs, heart and it even waved at us (well, 'he' who is now 1 yr old!).

slug · 20/11/2006 15:15

I had one at 6 weeks because of a threatened miscarriage. It was the single best moment of my pregnancy, seeing the heart still beating in our very much wanted baby.

PinkTinsel · 20/11/2006 15:16

like a little teddy bear with bud arms and legs and a little beating heart.

amazing

MKG · 20/11/2006 15:34

I had an internal at 9 weeks because my bladder wasn't full enough for a stomach scan. It was no problem. I asked if there were any complications, because being rh- I would need an injection if there was any bleeding. The tech told me that she was unaware of anything ever happening after an internal.

chelle479 · 20/11/2006 16:07

i had an abdominal scan at 7 and a half weeks and baby could be seen fine...very small but heartbeat was detectable.
have also had internal scans in 2 pregnancy's at around 5 weeks, and there were no ill effects to either

WeaselMum · 20/11/2006 16:08

I had two internal scans - st 6 weeks ds looked like a little blob, and you could see a heart beating away - then at 8 weeks he looked exactly like a jelly baby - it's lovely to have the pics.

ShowOfHands · 20/11/2006 16:14

I went to the EPU at 7wks 4days and they could see everything they needed to with an abdominal scan (little baby, buds for arms and legs and that oh so important beating heart). I did opt to have an internal scan in addition as they had to do an internal anyway (to find cause of the bleeding) and I wanted as much information as was available after having had a previous m/c. It was painless but cold!

oopsididitagain · 20/11/2006 16:34

i've had one and it didnt hurt at all... good luck x
