Long wait for midwife

This is my first pregnancy. I've finally managed to book my first appointment at the midwife for 7 August. I'll be about 9 weeks then. Is that not a bit long having never see a doctor/midwife?

That's normal, although it can seem a long time. There is nothing much they can do before then.

With both my pregnancies I have not seen anyone before 8/9 weeks.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 06/07/2015 12:28

No booking appointments are usually carried out around 8-10 weeks depending on which area you live in.

Wonkyparsnip · 06/07/2015 12:30

I thought you couldn't see your midwife till 8 weeks plus.

Cnmorgan13 · 06/07/2015 12:30

Lol! Thanks! I imagine this will be the first of many stupid questions. Confused

Thats quite quick, sorry! It's difficult isn't it - all you can think of is that you're going to have a baby, but the reality is life carries on pretty much as normal for 9 months!

You can can more info off mumsnet than from your midwife anyway.

Mamabear14 · 06/07/2015 12:35

I had my booking at 10 weeks, I think that's pretty normal. I remember it does feel like ages though!

tinyme135 · 06/07/2015 13:14

I think I was quite lucky. Cause I didn't know when my last period was (was roughly around end of march) I phoned them on the Thursday and come the Tuesday I was in my booking appointment and booking my 16 week appointment. Found out I was already 2 months gone and didn't know haha.

I found the wait for the dating scan seemed to take ages but it's probably cause I'm too impatient and wanted to see my little one.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 06/07/2015 13:46

Thats a ver short wait, rather early if anything. There is nothing much a midwife can do for you at that point anyway.

EdgarAllenPoe · 06/07/2015 15:57

Had mine at what I thought was 10 and a half weeks (turns out it was 11 as dates were slightly out). I only got that because despite my GP supposedly referring me, having heard nothing by 10 weeks I rang the maternity ward of my local hospital (only number I could find - my GP won't give out the midwife's number!) to say I'm sure I should at least have an appointment booked if not have had one by now. They had no record of me! 9 weeks is just fine! It does feel like a long time though.

If you have anything in particular that is worrying you such as bleeding/cramping, you can always get an appointment with any GP (not mine hopefully) who can refer you to the EPAU (early pregnancy assessment unit). I think dialing 111 can also get you referred if you need it. Otherwise, you just have to sit it out.

MrsSnow · 06/07/2015 17:47

I was 12/13 weeks before I saw mine. 9 weeks sounds good to me.

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 06/07/2015 18:33

I saw midwife at 7 weeks for booking appointment after seeing GP at 5 weeks - but I needed bloods done asap & medication adjusted due to a longstanding health condition.

soloula · 06/07/2015 19:08

Congratulations OP. Smile Like others have said 9-10 weeks seems about standard. I was 11 weeks with DD1 and 9 weeks with this pregnancy. Just to warn you that it may well drag until your booking appointment. Same for the 8 weeks from your 12 week scan until your 20 week scan. But after 20 weeks it seems to fly in! Like others have said, any worries don't hesitate to phone GP or NHS 111.

IrisBlue15 · 06/07/2015 19:10

Was it just the earliest appointment they could give you? I'm a bit anxious that I need to wait for more proof of address to arrive in the post before I can even register with my new GP and I only just have a month left in my first trimester!

MissMartin10 · 06/07/2015 19:12

Morgan im 12 on sunday and I've not got mine until friday when im 11w5d.. despite telling them when i was 5 weeks Hmm ...don't worry Grin x

Cnmorgan13 · 06/07/2015 22:43

Thanks again. Probably just being paranoid Grin(who me?!) I guess it's cause I don't feel pregnant. I'm lucky as sin that I've never had any morning sickness so far knock on wood or any other symptoms. I guess I'm anxious for "proof" other than a lack of period and a pee stick. I want someone in a white coat to tell me lmao!
