I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

Heaven glad to hear you're feeling a bit better. Can completely understand about the LO listening to the going ons of the bathroom. My dd mimics my vomiting and shouts mama going to eurghhhh every time I make a dash!

ealli glad you are starting maternity leave. Nothing worse than worrying about a job when you are this sick!

Meerka I'm already on cyclizine...was prescribed it for the pregnancy I recently lost so held on to it and took it straight away once I started feeling sick. The problem is it makes me so groggy and drowsy...and I can't look after my LO. She's only 2 and needs me a lot. Finding pregnancy much harder this time round with another one to look after but also it kind of forces me to do things. Have heard of b6...can you get over the counter??

Anyone find they have lots of extra saliva and phlegm? (Sorry!!) I had it with dd so hoping it means this bean will stick...it's making me feel worse. Constantly having to spit!

Could kill my dh. He ate my grapes! Said he didn't realize I could eat them!! Angry

Heavenscent86 · 02/09/2015 21:00

I had loads of extra saliva and phlegm. Mostly disappeared once I was admitted to hospital and they gave me intravenous cyclizine. I was worried it would come back but my ondansetron has kept it pretty much at bay. I don't know if that's any help but hopefully if you have to try other anti sickness meds one of them will take it away for you. It made me so much more nauseous.

Reebok · 02/09/2015 21:05

Glad I'm not the only one....was beginning to think I was strange. Ah you have the good drug!! My gp last time would never prescribe it no matter what evidence I threw at him. My hg went away for a few weeks at 16 weeks but made a come back again further on. I must be mad to want to go through this again. Should be trying to sleep as I'm back to work tomorrow but suffering from trapped wind. As per usual nothing works.

MotherofPearl · 02/09/2015 21:30

Reebok, I had a terrible time with excess saliva when I was at my worst. While I was in A&E waiting to be admitted at around 6 weeks, I lay about (including on the floor) with a pink plastic tupperware pot under my mouth and just allowed the saliva to just sort of pour into it! Dignified! I was so past caring at that point.

eallison88 · 02/09/2015 21:35

I've been lucky that excess saliva seems to be the one HG symptom I haven't had, so can't offer anything other than sympathy. I only really found saliva an issue when vomming/heaving.

I'm glad decision is made. Just have to tell boss now! My dad told me he'd pay me the extra week maternity pay if it meant I'd stop on Friday and kook after myself and his grandchild!

Ems10000 · 02/09/2015 21:41

MofP your post has just brought back memories of my very dark early days! I too suffered with excess saliva, I constantly dribbled into tissues, freezer bags etc for weeks. It seems like a distant memory now and although I still don't feel well it's a good reminder how far I've come. It does get better!

MotherofPearl · 02/09/2015 22:14

Ems, you're right, nearly everyone improves a lot from the early days. And for me the whole experience is now a distant memory (4 years ago), so much so that I'm currently TTC baby 3, which I'd never imagined possible at the time!
Eallison, so glad you're starting your mat leave on Friday! Only 2 more sleeps. Your dad sounds lovely. :)

Meerka · 02/09/2015 22:38

oh good glad you're on cyclizine. it's supposed to work very well with vitamin B6 which yes, you can get over the counter.

The drowsiness -may- go after a few days but if it isn't, you might need to see if the doctor can put you on something else .. have you got an understanding doc?

about the saliva, it's awful isn't it. No one would believe it if they didn't experience it. I had an empty small drink carton and spat down the straw into it a lot. it minimized the god-awful smell and the sight. If you -can- spit as little as reasonably possible it helps, apparently, as the more you spit the more saliva you make.

Heavenscent86 · 02/09/2015 22:58

I'm so glad to hear other people had that same problem. Ok maybe that's not quite the right thing to say but even when I went to the hospital and told the doctors and nurses about the saliva they looked at me in complete astonishment. None of them had heard of it. I only got the ondansetron because I ended up in hospital. I'm just hoping my gp will prescribe it when this prescription runs out.

Peanutbutternutter419 · 03/09/2015 10:47

Morning All,

I have been suffering horrendously and looking for some support as I get the usual remarks from people thinking it is ms and don't really understand the extent of hg.

I am 9+5 weeks and have been suffering since 5+3 weeks. I was admitted to hospital at 8 weeks and have thankfully been able to stay home since then although it is so hard.

My DH is so understanding as this is my second hg pregnancy but he is starting to get worn out himself with working and doing everything at home and I feel so awful for pawning DS off to friend's and relatives all the time even though he is so good and doesn't seem to mind too much.

Definitely finding it more of a struggle this time although thankfully only working part time when I can as opposed to full time teaching with DS.

Anyway enough about me...hope everyone is having an OK day?

MotherofPearl · 03/09/2015 12:19

Welcome Peanut, and sorry to hear that you're suffering. Are you on meds, and if so which ones? I think it is harder the 2nd (and subsequent) times because you have your existing child/ren to worry about, and can't get as much rest. And as we all know, rest is key to surviving HG. Do moan on here all you need to. As you say, people often don't appreciate the massive difference between HG and normal morning sickness, which often makes sufferers feel very isolated.

Peanutbutternutter419 · 03/09/2015 14:49

Thanks MoP
Yes I'm on metachlopromide and recently they added in cyclizine but I haven't found that to be helping much.
I find that if I don't eat in the mornings (whilst at work) and then make a toasted ham sandwich when I get home and in bed, it stays down. If I try to eat anything while up and about it is a disaster.
I know it's not ideal but I'd much rather that than to be throwing up all morning. But oh the nausea is relentless!!

Meerka · 03/09/2015 16:17

peanut - in haste, don't take meto. and cyclizine together. apparently they interact badly. can you go back to your doctor or pharmacist and ask them to look it up in the British National Formulary? Hopefully your doc can prescribe domperidone instead or prochlorperazine (or even ondansetron if you're really lucky)

welcome here, it's a place of fellow endurers or graduates

Reebok · 03/09/2015 16:34

Hello all, first day back at work. Was awful. Started the day vomiting up the two bites of toast I managed. Managed a few grapes at work and half a cheese sandwich and have felt sick ever since. Had to tell my boss and she reActed as I expected. Annoyed at what it meant for her. I retorted with well I don't even know if I will carry to term anyway if that helps you! She obviously felt bad afterwards.

Peanut, I agree! Do not mix the two! I did that in my last hg pregnancy with dd and it made me worse! Hope everyone is feeling slightly better.

LucindaE · 03/09/2015 17:44

Welcome back to Rebok. Sorry work are being about as insensitive as can be; that is all so many managers seem to think of, 'how will this affect my staffing levels'; they might at least not show they're thinking it! You'd think training courses would have told them...I'm glad she felt guilty afterwards. That salivating is awful, and very common. MotherofPearl's description is grimly funny. I never understood how one can produce saliva and vomit up foam when certainly dehydrated.
How are the liquids staying down clucks Mother Hen?
PeanutButterNutter Welcome. Sorry you have been getting dismissive comments/useless advice, especially since you were admitted, and now I gather on meds that don't combine well. It's bad they didn't look that up.
Same question as above; how are liquids staying down? Did they give you kesostix/advise you to get them after your admission?
SkiptonLass Oh dear, I am so sorry you are suffering late on and were in Dante's Inferno this morning (I used to work in an office I called that). How disgusting, a tobacco chewing man in a maternity class....I'm glad you could face the tea. I am so glad you are nearly there.I was wondering how you were doing.
Heavenscent I believe others recommend lactulose (or however you spell it) for the constipation wih hondansetron?
Heavenscent It's interesting that Ondansetron stopped the excess saliva.
eallison That is so inconsiderate of your employers (gets back into Rant About Employers Mode) that I am delighted you've decided to go on ML. But why are there so many trips with the school?
thisisnow bugasta Lilac and others, I hope coping.
Great advice, as ever, from Meerka and MotherofPearl.
I bet I've cross posted with someone/missed someone...

Thanks lucinda. This is the same boss who forced me back to work when I was 15 weeks with hg. She's annoyed as someone else in my year is also expecting therefore due maternity leave soon. Silly thing is she knew I was pregnant in July when she chose to put me in the same year as the pregnant woman (I teach). She was clearly counting on me mc back then and annoyed today that I tried again quickly.

This phlegm and saliva is making me more nauseous. Having to spit into tissues discreetly all day. Noticed my worst points are morning as soon as I wake up until 12/1...I'm ok between 1-2.30 and then sick until bedtime. I wish I could look after my little girl properly. Can't even cook for her at the moment as makes me sick...she's eating meals I froze in advance in prep or frozen food her dad heats up. I feel so guilty.

eallison88 · 03/09/2015 19:13

lucinda I think we probably have a few more trips than most schools, but not that many more. It's my job that means I'm involved in so many of them! But no more til July!! I can't wait till this time tomorrow. Planning what I'm gonna do with my time now, not going bambino comes along sooner rather than later and ruins those plans!

eallison88 · 03/09/2015 19:14

"Not going"was meant to be "but hoping"... silly phone!

Peanutbutternutter419 · 03/09/2015 19:57

Thanks all above. How annoying that I have been put on 2 meds that don't work well together! And that was from the hospital!
I have been given Avomine this afternoon as I just got worse and worse as the days gone on. Will take one of those tonight and see how I get on!
Reebok I can relate completely! The saliva is horrible and definitely makes the nausea worse!
My DS is too being fed a lot of freezer foods at the moment as my DH is not a great cook and I did not prepare by batch cooking beforehand! I feel very guilty but have resided to the fact that I am doing the best I can. Still feel guilty as hell though!

Reebok · 03/09/2015 20:13

peanut thanks....that makes me feel slightly better to know I'm not the only one doing that. Was vomiting earlier on and dd started crying saying mama belly hurting. Think I scared her as I was vomiting and crying at the same time.

Coke seems to be my only friend at the moment. I cannot keep anything else down. And I must limit myself to one a day.

Does anyone else find their dh smells? I remember with dd I couldn't stand the smell of dh. Well today he came home and showered and tried to kiss my forehead and I pushed him away and said, didn't you shower properly?? You're making me sick! I'm awful!

Peanutbutternutter419 · 03/09/2015 20:20

God yes to DH problem!! Although for me it's his breath Blush
He has recently switched from cigarettes to vaping and I think it's the smell of that as I've only noticed it the last 2 weeks. Terrible! Poor man tries to kiss he and I have to tell him to brush his teeth first! He is getting a rough deal too.
My DS is pretty used to it and will ask me if I'm fine and then when I say yes he just walks off! So glad for that as I worried I'd scare the hell out of him but it's gone over his head. Your poor little DD is probably worrying about you. How old is she?

I wouldn't worry about limiting to 1 come a day if it is helping you? I was known to take a 2 lt bottle of caffeine free coke to school with me every day as a swig of it every now and then got me through my day! Do what works for you!

Reebok · 03/09/2015 20:43

Haha! That made me laugh. First time I've managed a smile all day.

She's only just turned two so still very young. In truth we weren't thinking of a second but after getting pregnant accidentally in June and mc in July we realized we wanted another.

I'm scared to have too much coke after the mc. Freezing water helps. I can sip it but moment it stops being ice cold I don't like it anymore. Grapes too. I bought more after dh upset me by eating them yesterday.

Meerka · 03/09/2015 21:04

oh god the Nose. the NOSE. can smell smoke from the next street over. Can smell absolutely everything. I'm sure it's allied to the awful taste in your mouth and the saliva.

Meerka · 03/09/2015 21:24

peanut a lot of people find Avomine quite good. fingers crossed you do too

eallison88 · 03/09/2015 21:56

Ladies from earlier in my pregnancy may recall me telling of sitting on the floor in tesco smelling deodorants trying to find one for hubby that didn't make me heave. So yes, totally understand hubby making you feel sick. He lived on omelets for a while early on in pregnancy as quick and easy. But had to cook them with kitchen door shut and back door open, and then eat them in the same way. Then he had to brush his teeth. And for a few weeks he had to use my fruity kids toothpaste cos the smell of mint made me heave too!
