39th week of pregnancy, Baby girl not moving since flutter this am.

My 25year old daughter, pregnant with her 2nd baby girl is just going into her 39th week of her pregnancy. She is quite a big girl anyway, but her pregnancy is much much larger in size, than when she had her 1st baby girl in July 2011. At the start of her 38th week, the midwife measured her bump which was surprisingly saying that she measured at 45 weeks. We thought the baby would have honestly arrived before now, as for most of the whole of the pregnancy she has been "very Low" the head has been down for a while, and we can't believe baby is still in there. We thought that as there didn't seem to be any concerns from the midwife, at that appointment, & she was saying all was "good, good, good, that everything is presumed as so. The baby girl has been very much so a lively little thing , we've been making jokes about the shapes she's been making on the outside of the bump, little fists n feet sticking out here n there, but, unaware, as she hasn't mentioned it until tonight, the baby hasn't moved, at all, all day, except for a bit of a flutter this early morning. As soon as I've heard we got on the phone to the birthing centre, & my husband is on route with her to the hospital, to be put on monitor as I'm writing this. I couldn't go with her as I'm a foster carer also, I have children here, as well as my grand daughter, little Maisy who's four and tucked up in bed, excited for her new baby sisters arrival. My daughter is close to her dad and in safe hands and supported by him. In the meantime, I had to ask, if anyone can enlighten me as to what could be going on here? I'm very anxious. Thanks.

Could be something or nothing, but always best to get checked as reduced movements can signal distress. Hopefully the monitoring will allow them to decide a plan of action and maybe a scan if she is measuring so far ahead.

I really can't say but it's definitely best that they've gone in to be checked. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep her in for observation, and I also wouldn't be surprised if you don't hear anything for a while as there may be no phone signal on the wards. So try not to panic if either of those things happens. If you want to keep yourself occupied I would gather up stuff you can send in to her if she gets kept in hospital - magazines, toiletries etc. Hope everything turns out ok.

Was it the same midwife who measured her this time as at previous appointments? My midwife with dd1 was really cross when the GP saw me for one appointment and measured the bump. She said it wasn't really useful as a guide unless the same person was doing it so that you could use it as an idea of growth. A one off measurement doesn't mean much and in a larger woman too I think it's particularly hard to draw conclusions. However the baby should be moving round more so you've done the right thing to get her off to be checked. I agree it may be a while before you hear anything so try not to worry.

It is always better to be checked out, especially if movements slow down. Often, it is nothing but, if there is something, the sooner she is seen, the better.

I've just called my husband, they're taking a look now, he said to ring back in ten minutes, so don't know anything yet, he wasn't saying. He probably doesn't know himself yet. Thankyou so much for all of the advice, I know it's late. I'm usually tucked up in bed by now, I'm also a very busy foster mum and Nanna to 7 including the new baby girl. You'd think I'd know this all already with the grandchildren I've had the pleasure to be present at their births. We were 2 days with Maisy, the last one and their have been 4 that popped out the really earliest on sets of labour, lucky for their mum, and one Caesarian, so you might think I'd know, but it's been 25 years since I last gave birth myself. So much has changed in the labour & delivery rooms.

I was advised to drink a very sugary drink, and then to see.
If no movement then to have the baby checked out on the heartbeat monitor in the hospital.

Luckily my baby started jumping around with the sugar.

I went in later that week 40 to be monitored anyway and was hooked up - it's pretty painless, took about half an hour.

Better safe than sorry.

Oh thank god, and thankyou everyone. We have a very normal heartbeat, baby & mummy are fine, all vitals are fine, they're leaving her on monitor for half an hour then likely to be sending her home. God only knows why, she's huge, and.... Very well engaged. I've made my eyes sore from weeping, and now from happiness. Thank you so much everyone, you have helped my frame of mind. Watch this space, I reckon it's gonna be a 9 1b baby or more. Looking for unusual baby names that will go well next to her big sister's name Maisy. She's adamant on having a middle name of 'Rose'. Maisy's is Maisy Faye. I like 'Laura Rose'

I've been into the monitoring unit this evening as my baby (38 weeks today) hadn't moved all day. Felt nothing when I woke at 7am until I called them at 4pm. After 4 she started moving but only very slightly. Rang my midwife who told me to call the hospital. They wanted me in at 6.30pm. We got worried as she initially couldn't find a heartbeat trace for ages. DH mentioned that baby has a habit of turning transverse. She felt for positioning and believes that she has turned again and popped the monitor right in the middle of my bump where it picked her up beautifully. The tight bands round my bump turned her into the karate kid and we were home by 8pm with an appointment for a scan tomorrow morning to check her positioning. The 3rd one I've had in 4 weeks! I think shes a bit wedged in hence the lack of feeling.

Glad all was well. Don't hesitate to send her back if anything else worries her . No harm at all in being monitored.

Laura is a nice name. I think Alice goes well with Maisy too. Or Louisa?
