Bumper on crib

Is this a daft question?

Ds1 due a week on Wednesday. I have a small crib instead of a moses basket for my bedroom and bought an air wrap bumper for it but do I need this when baby is new born? Are bumpers for when they can move about a bit more?

Tbh I've never used bumpers with either but I definitely don't think you'll need it for a new born. They don't move much x

I never used a bumper either. I thought they could be dangerous - risk of suffocation etc?

I never used a bumper for my son, there is no need.

I also had a crib for when DS was born. Put him in it the first night and he put his arm straight through the bars and I became worried about him breaking it!

I bought the air wrap bumper and fed it through the bars of the crib. It was brilliant and made the crib much cosier as well without me having to worry about him.

DS2 due in a week and crib with air wrap already set up!

Thanks for your replies. seeline I bought an air wrap bumper, it's mesh and breathable.

I think I'll wack it on anyway and see how we go just can't see through it to keep an eye

I've never understood the need for bumpers. Certainly not with a newborn. They don't move (much).

We had one for DS when he moved from moses basket to cot at 8 weeks. If I'm honest, it looked nice and matched his sleeping bag - no better reason. It was pointless when he was tiny and did bugger all to stop him banging his head or limbs when he go bigger and more wriggly so we won't be bothering again with DC2.

I think the suffocation risks are greatly exaggerated tbh - they just don't do much of use!
