First scan & twins

Just had my first scan today and found out we are expecting twins. I'm going through every single emotion at the minute.,. Never ever thought it would be twins. Has anyone experienced the same?

No I haven't experienced it. I already had both a boy and girl, with DC3 I got morning sickness for the first time, was very relieved when the scan showed only 1!

Congratulations! We had exactly the same 3 weeks ago and still hasn't really sunk in, just focussing on practical stuff and dealing with 2.3 yo ds and hoping it will start to feel real and exciting instead of just daunting soon.

I have twin dd's. It was a hugh shock to find out it was twins! There is a multiple birth board in the parent section on here. Great for advice and support.
You'll soon get used to the idea and, if anything like me, veer from being excited to scared. You will be fine, best of luck

Congratulations! I had the same surprise. I'm 15 weeks now but actually found out when I was just six weeks, because I had to have an early scan. They will be our first (and last!) children and we're so excited.

I've been reading a lot in hopes of helping us to prepare, because I'm keen to try to bf both of them. I recommend looking into Tamba. They have lots of good information and a membership will give you various discounts. Now we're just doing our best to sort out logistics. Think we've decided on a pushchair and early sleeping arrangements.

It's all quite daunting, but I'm trying to think of it as a great adventure!

Congratulations. Yes. I had an early scan at 7/8 weeks due to suspected ectopic pregnancy i went in by myself and the sonographer was very quiet. Thought immediately bad news and asked how the baby was "baby?.... babies there are 2 here you're having twins" she said. The most surreal feeling ever. I found being pregnant with twins really hard work and they were delivered at 35 weeks. My girls are 18 days old now and perfect. Twins are awesome. Congrats again

Woo hoo. Congratulations! I am 22 weeks with twin boys. I actually cried when I found out it was 2. I'm not even ashamed to say that to start with I was utterly horrified. DH didn't speak for 3 days. The first thing he said was 'fucking twins!' so I realised at that point it had sunk in for him! Haha!

I know just how you feel.

Having twins can very very hard work but it is also amazing.

When ours were tiny, we were struggling with sleep exhaustion and we still felt sorry for those poor souls who only had one baby.

Ours are in primary school and are amazing, worth every sleepless night of the baby years.

Find your local twins club (search on the TAMBA website) they will be thrilled to have a new member and will give you lots of great advice.

I'd also recommend 'Mothering Multiples' by Karen Kirkoff Gramada. You can get it on Amazon.

I cried when I found out it was twins too! Not tears of happiness I might add. I was so shocked I actually said to DH "I'll understand if you want to leave me!" He didn't and is a great dad and adores his girls

I will never forget the sonographers words "do twins run in your family" it was over 3 years ago but still clear my mind.

We are super excited and felt blessed with one now there's two it's so overwhelming. Lots of things run through your mind.

We have no sets of twins at all in the family.

We have another scan next week for some additional tests, can't wait to see them again. It will feel so surreal for the next few months! Thanks again

I'm sure your Doctor/Midwife will have told you but you need to go and get a prescription for a bigger dose of folic acid.

Woohoo! Twins are awesome! Our non-id boys are now nearly 5 months old. Great fun. Start charging people who say "double trouble" to you. Congrats!

Congratulations! ! Have just replied to another post about an early scan because I'd had quite a big bleed. I thought I'd had a miscarriage. The sonographer said "I can see two sacs" and I had no idea what that meant (in a kind of one sac equals healthy baby, 2 sacs means it's come away / you've miscarried). So I said "what does that mean?" and she just said "twins".

I can honestly say it was the biggest shock of our lives. Not once had it ever crossed my mind that it'd be twins.

But that was almost 11 years ago now! It was hard work at the start but it is brilliant. Agree that the interaction / secret language / infectious giggling is so special and unique. Still feel truly blessed to have been so lucky!

Hi izzie, I found out I was expecting twins 3 weeks ago, I'm now 10 weeks. We have a little suspicion it might be twins because we had some fertility support conceiving. But still when they told us at the scan it was one of those moments I'll never forget. Think DH and I have got our heads around it now and are really excited now. I have what I think is normal 1st trimester nervousness that it's all a mistake, but deep down I think it'll work out.

Very tired, horrific morning sickness, and starting to get a bump which needs to be hidden for a few more weeks.

Congratulations! I found out at 12 weeks and was horrified. Now I've settled into it a bit, and while it's still a terrifying prospect, I'm kind of looking forward to it.

Thanks everyone. We were pricing prams today. Yikes! How expensive are they. We have our eye set on the Icandy one. Plenty months to save.

We are due 1st Jan, the midwife mentioned I would be earlier. Maybe 36/37 weeks?my plan is to finish work until 35 weeks. Does anyone have any advice on this? I get the metro into work and worried about peak times.

Ive been the complete opposite. Had a few sick days but other than that I've been completely fine. However, have out in a few pounds already.

Congratulations - I have 2 month old twins - they are adorable. I also have a 3yo and 5yo. I worked until 35 weeks. It's hard but doable.

I loved that pram too but I just thought being on my own whilst my partner is at work it would be much easier. Plus we travel to Scotland quite a bit from Newcastle so it would probably take up a bit of car space.

It feels so surreal finding out. We found out at our 12 week scan. Our due date was 24th Dec then changed at the scan to 3rd. We have no twins at all in the family. It was a huge shock, happy shock but took a few days to sink it

Wow! Massive congratulations! Twins are absolutely amazing in everything they do. Our ID boys are 21m and perfectly crazy - chattering away to each other, answering us back, chasing each other around the garden and learning so much from each other and the world.
I spent the whole pregnancy saying 'no, twins don't run in our families' and the 21m since saying 'no, not double trouble but twice the fun'. Be very very prepared for lots of attention when out. On our first day trip to a local coffee shop we stopped counting at the 100th person to stop and gush. That was more exhausting than looking after the boys!

Yep. I'm now 20 weeks. I might have missed it in your post, but did they tell you whether or not yours shares a placenta? Assume not if they asked if they run in the family.

Yes, the prams sure are expensive! I'm a bit further along than you, and will actually have to part with the money soon.

As for maternity leave, my consultant said that it was entirely up to me, but that most of his patients tended to leave at around 32 weeks. My twins are dcda twins and I was also told that the guidance says to not go beyond 38 weeks, but I'm not sure how rigidly hospitals stick to that if you have an easy pregnancy.
