Pregnant with number 3 despite having a coil!

Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of moral support and to see whether anyone else had experienced this. I went to have my scheduled smear this morning, told the nurse that I'd had a copper coil fitted about a year ago and she said she couldn't find the threads. Next thing I know I'm in the GP's office having a pregnancy test and yes, I am pregnant with my third child!

Shocked doesn't begin to cover it. My husband and I had decided that two was enough for us - we have a 4.5 year-old girl and a 15-month-old son, although I never said never.

I'm booked in to have an early scan on Friday morning so they can see whether the coil is still there and also to establish that it's not an ectopic pregnancy, which is of course a risk. My GP assured me that she thought the coil must have just come out without me realising (that's what two natural deliveries will do to you hey?!) but I'll have to wait and see.

My head is absolutely spinning. Anyone had a similar experience?

It's funny that I read this today, after yesterday listening to a wise lady telling me about her surprise pregnancy after 3 children and 7 years after her husband's vasectomy... she tells me that it was the best thing to ever happen to her marriage, her family and life in general.

May be some things are just meant to be and will happen regardless of what we do....

I'm 6 weeks pregnant despite using 2 forms of contraception.

I'm at the stage so can't offer any advice.

Oldest is 2.5 and youngest is 6 months

Not the coil that failed. But yes, I had a surprise third.

Thank you, Glinda. That's what the doctor said, too. We know that we will adore a third child and I feel so guilty for crying when I found out - with my last two pregnancies I was overjoyed! It's just such a shock - we were just feeling like life is getting back on track and I never suspected for a second that this might be a possibility.

Gosh, GlitteringJasper, that is a shock. Thank goodness pregnancy is 9 months long so we have time to get our heads round the idea!

This is my worst nightmare!! I had a cool fitted a month ago and haven't been able to find my own threads. I presumed if it fell out I'd know about it!!!

God, don't feel guilty! I bet you had the shock of your life! Good luck with everything.

I'm having a surprise third, and I was really upset when I found out. Am now further down the line, and really happy about it. Give yourself time. X

I fell pregnant with the Mirena coil. This is my third pregnancy too and was a complete shock. The doctor could still feel my strings, but the only difference was the coil had slipped down slightly from it's original position. I am currently overdue with our baby at the moment, it also came as a big shock for us, as we didn't plan on having more children. I believe these things sometimes happen for a reason. Take care

I got pregnant on the coil, mine had gone up and was sat at the top of my uterus right next to where the baby had implanted. They told me I'd almost certainly miscarry due to location and inability to attempt to remove it so I had a termination at their advice.

Whatabout-Sorry to hear about your experience. I too was told during my scan to locate my coil, that removing my coil would disrupt the pregnancy and would result in a miscarriage. After medical advice, I had the coil removed during the pregnancy at 8 weeks, as I was told leaving the coil in situ could result in complications further on, into my pregnancy. Some women do choose to also keep the coil in throughout their pregnancy. I didn't realise how many women fall pregnant with a coil, I was told it was as effective as sterilisation.

I begged them to try and remove but they refused. I will always wonder a tiny bit if I would have gone to term with the baby, but it was the right decision at the time and I now have a wonderful two year old boy and his brother due in September. It's just part of my story now.

Whatabout and Tillytoes4 I'm so sorry to hear about your experiences. What a dreadful thing to have to go through.

I feel so many mixed emotions - so shocked to be pregnant despite taking what I believed to be near on fool-proof precautions but know I will be terribly upset if there is anything wrong with the pregnancy as a result of the coil. Sometimes it's hard to be a woman!

Ah, Tillytoes4 I just re-read your post - my apologies, very glad to hear you have a healthy overdue baby! Fingers crossed you don't have to wait too much longer.
