Camera for when baby arrives???

Me & DH both have iPhones but we're thinking of buying a camera to capture first moments when our little one arrives. I do also have a digital camera doesn't work to well very temperamental. Can't be dealing with that lol. What would you suggest? Go for a camera or not? (Settle with iphone pictures)

If so any recommendations on cameras? Where to buy?

We bought a new digital camera for DD's arrival but in all honesty just use our iPhones . We usually have them close to hand whereas the camera needs to be found/charger etc. we are pretty useless though.

We also bought a camera for DDs arrival, and I am SO glad we did. The iPhone's are fine, and they are great for a quick snap, but I really am pleased that we have so many high quality photos of her first year. I still have to be regimented about taking it out in the changing bag (a lot of the camera photos are in the house and garden ). Do it!!

I guess it depends what you want it for and whether you'll use a proper camera in the long-run. If you're after a compact camera, then you can't go wrong with the Panasonic Lumix range - DH has had 3 of them over the years and loves them. I would always choose a proper camera over a phone, just because I find the quality not quite as good - though I know that phone cameras are getting better these days so it might not be the case. If you do get a camera, I'd buy a spare battery for it (and an extra memory card - they're pretty cheap now), just in case! In my experience, the photos from proper cameras are usually better, though it depends whether you want a quick reminder or something more lasting.

I saw someone else had bought a proper disposable film camera to capture the birth/afterwards etc, so that might be a consideration as for about £7/£8 you can buy it and most come with free developing I think. Plus, it's always nice to have physical prints, though I think I'd mix digital and film if I was going to go that way. HTH

Thank you mrs DH doesnt see the point he feels phone is better just because it's always to hand. Where as camera is put away & not always there when we want to take a pic to capture those special moments. But I just feel a camera is needed for arrival of little one. Will have a look in to the Panasonic LUMIX range. Thanks x

I have a Samsung and a Nikon.
The Samsung is for quick no need to think about them shots. Plus it was cheapish so didn't mind the dc's using it, especially when younger.

The Nikon for the more pro look, when I want that extra something and can play more.

And of course for the bog standard iPhone because it's always there.

I have had the Samsung and the Nikon for 8/9 years now. So probably no helpful.

Although with the iPhone there lots of apps that give you a bit more. if you have time before your due date, have a look at those as well. Sure they must sell them, Polaroid used to sell a picture printer that was cheap to run and good to print out pics to see quality, if you don't have a photo printer.

Originally we bought a very nice Nikon camera, the pictures were fantastic but the camera was quite bulky and never seemed to fit in the change bag / required lens changes which was a real faff etc. and so it was barely used. We sold that one and bought a Samsung 'bridge' camera, still excellent quality photos but much more portable and very easy to use, the model number is NX300 if you want to have a look at it, I'd definitely recommend it.

We didn't have a great camera when ds was first born and I really regret it now. We have some lovely pictures that aren't brilliant quality. When he was about 2/3 months old we bought a Fujifilm (we got it from pc world- it was about £150 on a good deal)and have taken some amazing pictures on it. I once spent nearly a whole day playing with it, taking pictures of chubby little hands and feet (how pfb is that !)
